The funny thing is I actually consider myself a weaker applicant aside from my stats.

The party was fun. I made beer can chicken.

haha I mean the stats are the most important part. Anyone can take a year to shadow some doctors and get some research experience or volunteer, but not everyone can fix their GPA or get a high MCAT score

Yeah, but I got nailed on my interviews because I don't have any shadowing. My stats are pretty good, but my Verbal score is average and most of my prereq's came from a community college.

Lol in the end its all about the acceptances and you got those so I think you're a really strong applicant and can relax about everything until the fall of next year!
 
So I'm guessing the "one batch of prematches" policy from last year isn't entirely the case this year? UT-H is tied for my first choice these days, and I was really hoping to get an offer from here... and before February would be even better.
 
They sent out several batches of prematch offers last year, so I'm sure they'll keep doing it. When I prematched a few years ago it was in late December.

There's still a great chance to go to this school. I have classmates who got their only interview of the year on the last day of interviews and got in off the wait list. Don't lose hope just because you haven't prematched or even interviewed yet.

There were 5 batches last year.
 
They've already had 2 batches now in 2 days.

Accepted today at 12:26 pm. Interviewed I think on the 10th of October.

UTH was my first choice 😀 weee
 
Do they do 2nd look? Can I bring my parents to show them the school and TMC?

I would like to know, too.

That being said, the admissions people seemed pretty willing to pair you off with a med student if you wanted to come back for an individual tour.
 
Can someone explain how to go about e-mailing UTH about our acceptance. It says to e-mail them back within two weeks saying whether or not we plan to attend. I will more than likely go here but am still waiting to hear back from one more school. What do I say in the e-mail?

Just email back and say that you accept the offer. It is not binding in any way.

We're happy to show you around for a 2nd look.

We have a committee specifically set up for it, or other student ambassador groups can do it. I'll send you a message with who to contact.

Also, is anyone else not seeing UTH under their prematch offers on TMDSAS?
 
Not me...but I've had my heart set on UTSW from the beginning. Has much more to do with location than ranking or anything. Interviewed at both and loved both but the location of UTSW makes it perfect for my wife and I. It would be a tough decision if that wasn't the case though.

This is basically my situation, but for UTH instead of UTSW. My entire family is in Houston, and it would be best for my SO and I to be there in the long term. I've wanted to go to UTH for years, and the interview day really sold me. UTSW was a close second, but at this point unless they gave me a full ride and UTH didn't give me anything, I'll be attending UTH.

Btw you won't be able to meet with the dean on second look, but you can meet with other admissions staff or students.

It shows up there after you have been offered a pre-match acceptance. You can (but do not have to) select to withdraw so that school can offer your spot to some other applicant.
 
Has anyone gotten the admissions packet yet? *humph* I keep checking my mail obsessively 😀 Can't wait to get the official stuff!!!
 
Does Houston do scholarships? Ive never heard of anyone getting one. What about the other TX schools? Do you find out when you get in?

UTH is the school I have always wanted to go to. I pre-matched at other schools, and I have interviewed everywhere but UTH and UTSW. I do not particularly want to attend SW, but I really would like to have the opportunity at UTH. Is it frowned upon to email admissions about wanting to attend UTH if I have not even received an invite to interview?

The way I see it, you're already accepted so you really have nothing to lose by throwing a line out there and trying to get UTH to take note. I think it says something if you've already been accepted but you know you'd rather go to UTH.

The worst they could say is no and you'll be in the same spot you're in now. You never know until you try. I think you'd regret it if you didn't at least try.

Remember when you told me something along these lines? I know they said now that they 'don't accept letters of interest' but... I don't think anyone really has anything to lose.

If I hadn't written one, I'm 100% sure I'd be 1800 miles away at med school right now. So obviously I am biased but I definitely support writing letters to express your specific interest in attending the school. They can throw it away unread, but they definitely aren't going to take away an interview that they had planned to give you anyway. And it seems smarter for the admin to give an interview to someone who has gone out of their way to express interest in the school than some random person with similar stats. Just my 2cents.
 
UTH was my dream school....but now Im getting cold feet. Is the workload really that bad? How do you deal with the exam schedule?

I hear it's pretty stressful, if you want easy then go get your PhD.

The workload doesn't seem to be much different than any other med school. I know so many attendings that think our school is weird because it's the only school that their colleagues look back on and say, oh med school wasn't so bad, I actually really liked it for the most part! And that has been my experience so far as well.

The exam schedule is not bad actually. A lot of schools have "quizzes" or exams every week or two, and that, to me, would be so stressful. Most of us like having the break that a block schedule provides. Block weeks sounded like finals every 4 weeks (which was terrifying) but I ended up liking it just fine. Regardless of where you go, workloads won't differ much. What does differ: location, atmosphere, people (in any order). If you choose based on those factors I don't think you can go wrong.
 
Any current student want to talk about life as a first or second year? I could have recited what it is like during my interview day, but that was so long ago and I forgot.

How are classes structured? How does it compare to a science undergraduate semester? What time/days do you have classes? etc...

+1 I was worried about block and it hasn't been bad at all - I enjoy being able to take the first couple of blocks pretty easy and the schedule during the exam week is pretty generous - lots of time to study/sleep/etc. Also the fact that there are no quiz type grades coupled with video lectures (with last years available) means that you can pretty much setup your block schedule to how you want.

I don't think the workload is any different from any other school - everyone has to learn the same information for step 1 anyways.

Generally there are classes in the morning with between 2-4 lectures, an hour for lunch and either gross or histo lab in the afternoon. Gross lab has you on a team of 6 split into 3 that alternates days, occasionally you will have ICM on an afternoon you do not have grosslab. (MWF). Histo lab is not mandatory and there is a postlab for about 30 min that goes over the salient information (T/TH).

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by structure - perhaps you could specify your question?

As for comparing to undergrad - its going to be extremely variable based on your previous experience with the subject and the school you come from.

I guess I was vague when I said structure. I mean, how is your grade determined? Do you just have one final and that's it? Can you be more specific about class times? Also, how was the grading here? Grades or pass/fail? Thanks.
