The choice is way harder than I expected. I ranked ut Houston first, but after match day I started to like utmb more. Now I just don't know.

Same here. I'm still thinking about it though. I know Galveston isn't exactly beach paradise, but I think I would be happier walking/riding my bike to school through a beach town than riding public transportation to medical metropolis or navigating Houston traffic.

If they had asked me a month ago I'd have said yes. But the more I've pictured myself at the school where I'm holding an acceptance, the more attached I get. Also, found an apartment and applied to the MD/MPH program at my other school. Supposed to start classes next month. I just don't think I can give up all that at this point.

I feel the same way about Houston. I've been living here most of life and while it's ok, I've never loved it and would enjoy living elsewhere for a while.

I'm actually on the waiting list for four schools, so I don't know where yet! *bites nails*

does anyone know the proper protocol for withdrawing from a school you matched with? I matched and accepted admission at another school, but now that I am accepted off the waitlist at UTH (and plan on attending UTH) what should I do? Is it as simple as sending emails to both admission offices? Or is there something more formal through TMDSAS or so?

I just emailed.

ok cool yeah thats what I did, and I also emailed TMDSAS and they said they changed my "official school" in their system too

So I've started looking for a place to live, and I'm not having any luck. I really need a house or some type of housing that will accommodate two relatively large dogs. I spent the day surveying the area surrounding the medical center, but all I found was apartments, and most of them had limited availability. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should look?

I lived in an apartment style house while in school, and have been living in an apartment in Houston for the last several months. I'm starting to think that an apartment is not a practical option for me, so my main priority has become finding something with a decent sized yard. I'm willing to sacrifice a little in terms of the commute if I can find what I'm looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you don't mind the commute, and you're looking for something cheap, but decent sized, I'd highly recommend looking at houses off 288 near Pearland.

I rent a house in Meyerland, near Chimney Rock and Bellfort. Prices aren't too much higher than some of the apartments in the area, and you could always get a roommate to make it more affordable if you need to.

The commute's not too bad either.

Thanks you guys! I actually just looked at some houses off of 288 today, and I really liked what I saw. Nysw, how long do you think it would take to get to the med center from 288 and Orem (or anywhere in that general area)? I could see the skyline and medical center from the houses, but I have no idea what the traffic is like on 288 and 59. Thanks again for the help.

Edit: Or more generally, from 288 and the Beltway?

I live in Pearland, right off 288 and it takes me about 20mins to get to the medical center IF there is NO traffic. And if there is traffic it could take upwards to an hour to get to medical center from Pearland... I think from Orem to the medical center without traffic it would take about 15min or less... with traffic, I have no idea. And the traffic really depends on what time of day you're going to the medical center; 7-8:30am the traffic is horrible from 288 to the medical center... So if you're a "class goer" I don't think I would recommend living off 288...
Also coming back from the medical center to 288 there is heavy traffic around 4p-7p... If you avoid those times for the most part you won't be in heavy traffic.

On the other hand, there's rarely traffic coming from Meyerland via Bellaire/Holcombe. I've actually seen some houses for rent in WestU close to Stella Link. I love that area in general so if I was going to look for a house to rent that's where I'd look!!

I just withdrew -- hopefully my spot will go to someone still waiting on here. Good Luck!

As others have said, the drive from 288 is not bad when you're not in rush hour. I think a lot of people just take Almeda down to the Beltway, which is a lot faster.
Same goes for 59 - the distance is okay, but traffic during morning and afternoon rush hours are ugh. It's much faster to take local.

I'll also second Meyerland/Bellaire/West U. Not that much traffic on 610 on the southern portion of the loop. Driving on local takes slightly longer than driving on the freeway - for once. I can't believe I didn't endorse my own hood initially. From just driving around, I've seen a couple of houses for sale/lease in this area too.. nice yard, quiet neighborhood.

I will third! I used to live in Meyerland and really enjoyed the area. It is quiet, residential, affordable, and close to everything. I could find groceries as well as mom and pop stores. Plus if you want to hop on the light rail, just walk or drive to the nearest stop across the highway (was always my super secret place to park for Rodeo).

Again, I really appreciate your responses. One other question, can medical students park in the garage across from the school (the one with the burnt orange roof)?

Yes, we can get parking permits for $30/semester to park there after 5pm on weekdays and anytime on the weekends. It's pretty expensive to park there during the day though but I can't remember exactly how much. $7-10 depending how long you're there.

You can, for ~$10/day, or try to get a parking pass for ~$150/month, but when my wife tried to get a parking card there they said there was a waitlist.

Ouch! So where do most of the commuters park?

Thanks everyone for all of your help! Due to recent developments, I will likely be withdrawing from UT Houston today. Good luck to all of you!

I saw your post in the UTSW thread, congrats!

Thanks! It was a tough decision, but I think Dallas will be the best fit for me. I loved both schools, and I know I'm missing out on a great group of students at UT Houston. I did inform them of my decision today, so hopefully another qualified applicant gets my spot before the June 1st deadline.

hey, I'm looking for an apartment to sublease for june and july near the medical center. pm me if anyone knows of a place.

thanks 😎

Looks like there hasn't been any waitlist movement recently, despite a few people withdrawing their acceptance. Because Houston's waitlist is ranked, I wonder if an acceptance automatically goes out once a spot opens up. I suppose I'll call tomorrow and ask.

I got accepted here! It was my first choice so thanks to everyone that rescinded their offers. I'm withdrawing from UTMB now, so hopefully I can pay it forward.

Excited! 😀

got accepted a half hour ago, OOS 3.8/35. Was really hoping for UTSW acceptance, but now there's no chance. Seeking advice: I have an acceptance at Ohio State University Med School (where i did my undergrad)- tuition there is $23k (scholarship included) and it's ranked pretty high (us news and world report). UTH is ranked lower, but would be the cheaper option in the end since my family lives there and i could just live with them and save on rent. Advice?

If you chose to live with family you would be sacrificing a little bit of your social life. It's a completely different experience when one is integrated within a student community compared to when one is commuting. Having said that, I don't think the financial difference between the two schools is that great, so you should probably be thinking about which school was a better "fit" for you. Where do you think you'll be happier? And how much do rankings matter for you. Is the extra ranking worth the extra 20K over the 4 years? But really, go by where you think you would be happier.

Does anyone know any new details about the date when retreat is happening?

I'm sure more details are coming but classes start the 20th of August, so I think retreat is supposed to be 17-18th

is it normal that i still have the background check, picture, and transcript all on my to-do list but ive completed them all??

The website they're using to manage all that stuff this year is brand new, so I think they're still working out some kinks with it.

To be honest, I would ignore rankings (and cost) for now and go with where you'll be happiest and consequently probably most successful. The name on your diploma will be less important than your grades and board scores, and it's not as though either one of the schools you have to pick from is bad. Never saw the point in picking a school based on things such as how many research dollars it receives, unless you plan on doing research. You will get a good medical education wherever you choose to go.

BTW, welcome to UT Houston!

thanks for all the advice! i am leaning towards uth to be closer to family, but decided will probably get an apartment. Being an osu undergrad though, i just can't get myself to withdraw from osu- i've been accepted since october and people here kill to get accepted. i think once i'm at uth though, i'll love it just as much.

Dang man, their system sucks. It's awful to navigate/inaccurate/never updated. I understand it is a new system, but it's been like this for over a month. Shouldn't take that long to transition. Especially considering how important it is to have it functional. And if you call admissions to check status on something they get pissed at you for not knowing their system isn't updated lol

I was recently admitted to Houston, my number one choice, and am so fired up. I have been attempting to complete most of the entering student requirements and was wondering if a fellow entering student could PM me because I have some questions regarding the checklist. Thanks, and I am looking forward to meeting everyone at retreat.

Congrats and welcome! I'm glad you're planning on going to retreat... so sad that I won't be able to go this year. It's a lot of fun!

I was accepted May 15th. I'm IS and interviewed early October. Hope that helps
