Anybody else going to the welcome weekend next month?

Yep ima be there too but only for Friday and Saturday. I have an event to host for an organization on Sunday...

Anyone get this email about 40 min ago? Someone posted here awhile ago saying the UTH twitter feed said the waitlist was unranked, so I guess this is interesting news.

Hello UTH applicants for the entering class of 2012,

Any updates, letters of intent, or extra letters of recommendation will not increase your chances into our medical school. As of right now, there are no additional steps you need to take. If your status does change, we will contact you by email.
We will be more than happy to assist you with any questions or concerns, Please contact our office at 713-500-5116.

I got the E-mail and found that interesting too. I wish they would tell us our rank.

Can anyone tell me what a typical day in the life of an MS1 is like?
class from 8-noon, MWF you have anatomy lab in the afternoon, random days you'll put on your white coat and practice a physical exam & history taking. You'll be home by 5 on long days (max of twice a week), short days you'll be home by 1. study until 8 or 9, go to sleep whenever you feel like it

of course you can watch lecture from home if you want to and set your schedule however you want. you just have to be at anatomy lab and ICM days.

Thanks! Is there a fee to view the recorded lectures? Also is it common for students to seek out employment in a research lab their first year?

Recorded lectures are free. They're encouraged as review, etc.

Some people will find research after their first year. Honestly the first year can be a little overwhelming. People start out interested in conquering the world, then realize that it takes more effort than they realized to stay on top of lectures, etc. Especially first semester.

As far as actual paid employment goes, I wouldn't count on it. There are enough med students willing to work for free that few people get paid. There's a certain trauma research program that does pay, but the hours are prohibitive for first year students.

When did UT-H begin admitting people off the wait list last year?

On last year's thread, it looks like the earliest post-Match Day acceptance was April 18. I'm getting kind of antsy on the waitlist, so I hope it's sooner this year!

My friend got into UT Houston today!!

Were they already accepted to another school? If so which one?

You are all alarmingly nosy.

you're really negative. forums are for asking questions, if they didn't care to share they probably wouldn't post in the first place. I've seen you on this thread before, you never have anything helpful to add, just criticism. What are you on here for anyway?

He matched to his second Texas school. He ranked Houston first, and was taken off their waitlist on Thursday. He has full intention of accepting--this was his first choice school! 🙂

Sorry. I don't need a bunch of people that I've never met before to help me decide where I'm going to spend the next 4 years of my life. If I did, I would probably make entire threads dedicated to my tough decision.

right, good for you, you've got everything figured out. so again, why are you here? just got a strong urge to be an ******* to anyone you can find?

The only one who is alarming here is you. Those questions were perfectly appropriate, especially in light of the fact that this is a school specific thread viewed primarily by this year's applicants. And just to echo Missorlean's sentiment, why exactly are you on this page if you already have everything figured out? You're not attending UT Houston are you? Because I really don't want to be in a class filled with people like you.

Pretty much, yeah. Just trying to make friends. I guess I'm doing it wrong.

Great input.

Hah. Do you want the truth or do you want me to tell you want to hear?

Neither. I just made that comment to give you a taste of your own derogatory medicine.

After looking at your post history, I've decided that you're a troll. This conclusion, however, should not be take offensively, since it is much better than the alternative, which is that you are simply a d*** with nothing better to do with your time. This forum is designed for individuals who wish to share their experiences and discuss topics directly pertaining to their academic and professional interests. If you haven't recognized that, or can't respect it, then perhaps you should find a different place to express your feelings, because you are only detracting from what is otherwise positive and helpful discourse.

Yeah. Asking age, sex, location, MCAT score, GPA, list of fears, and personal worth of every person that gets an interview, rejection, or acceptance is really going to help anyone on this forum.

Yes! That's exactly what was asked!

Armybound, I'm not trying to turn this thread into a lecture, but zerog's negativity has pervaded every thread of interest to me. Also, I'm sure my fellow posters don't appreciate getting lambasted for asking perfectly appropriate questions.

From Welcome Weekend alone I know that most people are extremely cool and that the Class of 2016 is going to be awesome!

That's great to hear! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend. I'm sure I missed out 🙁

It's not such a bad thing that you weren't there. It was mostly just social events and we got to meet a lot of the current MS1s who were all super cool as well. They all seemed so happy with their decision to go to UTH. It just confirmed to me that this is as great a school in the state as any other.

I got the same impression on interview day. Granted, it was a very small sampling size, but it's still very encouraging to meet current medical students who seem to be completely satisfied with their decision; and at UT Houston, this feeling was by far the most pronounced among the students (at least from my experience).

Congrats to the Houston Class of 2016!!

I read on another UTSW thread that there has been movement on the waitlist... can anyone confirm?

Officially going to UTH 🙂! Withdrew from everywhere else today and I can't wait for retreat. (I matched, please don't think this is waitlist movement)

Nice! If you don't mind me asking, what finally clinched the decision for you?

I love Houston and TMC. I remebered when I first arrived in H-town, I used to visit medical center every weekend to see the hospital buildings, especially MDACC. How time flies, I graduated from UTMDACC as undergraduate and been hoping to attend medical school. One problem, I had a terrible GPA during my first and second year in undergrad and completely lost on what to do. My junior and senior years were graet but damages of 2.78 of first two years didn't allow me to raise my GPA above 3.32. I am 30 now and not that I could just run away from my family responsisbilities to just go for another postbac program since I am currently working. WHAT CAN I DO?

Nice! If you don't mind me asking, what finally clinched the decision for you?

There were a lot of factors and I tried to be logical about it.

  1. UTH is located in the largest medical center in the world and nearly every hospital it is directly affiliated with is known as the top in the world/nation. What really clinched it for me here though is that the UTH affiliated hospitals (ex: Memorial Hermann, The University of Texas MD Anderson) are not only the go to place of the rich/famous but offer a huge amount of free care to the poor as well. Put together I calculated that the UTH hospitals had the best patient outcomes of any of the schools I applied to, including the more highly ranked schools I applied and was accepted to. I want to learn from the doctors that caused best patient outcomes.
  2. Welcome weekend sold me on the students. The students were all extremely happy and they had well balanced lives. I am going to be living here for the next four years so I do not want them to just be a grind; I want to enjoy them too. I know here that I will have more learning resources than I know what to do with and the students are not cutthroat competitive. I can't wait for retreat.
  3. UTH is a rising star in terms of research and teaching. In the last decade they have really become the dominant presence in the medical center. If you drive around it is UT, UT, UT everywhere, They have a large number of new facilities to fill and they are actively recruiting the best researchers to fill them. While we all pretend rankings do not matter at all I believe they do only because they are a self-fulfilling prophecy. The lower you go the better the students and researchers you attract, it sucks and I hate it but it is partially true. I have been told by multiple advisors when I was making my decision that UTH was one of the youngest schools in TX and they believed UTH would greatly increase its national reputation (which is already very good) and place in the rankings in the coming years. Also, the research faculty seems to have a real focus on teaching the medical students which is very important to me.
  4. The outcomes for the students in residency placements are outstanding and the average step I score for last year's class was 236 (wow) according to what I was told by the faculty during my interview. Obviously students here are well regarded and well prepared
  5. Cost: UTH is the least expensive school in Texas (tuition+ fees+ subsidized living) period. They also hand out a huge amount of financial aid.

The only negatives for me were:

- - I am not the biggest fan of the curriculum, I would like to see them adopt the UCLA based curriculum that the other UT schools have adopted and a H/P/F instead of the pseudo A,B,C,D,F grading system but that is just personal preference.

- - I have been living in Houston my whole life and for undergrad so I am pretty tired of it.

I already had this stuff written down in my personal notes so I thought I would share it with you and others trying to make their final decision.

Oh yeah, Almost forgot they have the busiest trauma center in the US, 2nd in the world, and The Texas Heart Institute both are among the best for patient outcomes.

There were a lot of factors and I tried to be logical about it.

I really appreciate your input. My analysis was remarkably similar, even the negatives. I'm salivating at the prospect of training in the TMC, especially the MDACC. Congrats on your decision, maybe we will be classmates this Fall.
