I went to a premedical conference here this past year, November I think.
I was hoping to get a tour of the campus and some real good advice from current students, and did not get any of that!
They wouldn't take us on a tour. All the advice was soooo basic, it was boring, as if it was for high school students and college freshman who didn't even know what the MCAT was. The question asked that made the biggest impression on me, "So is the MCAT really as hard as everyone says??"

Sadly it made me leave disappointed in the school. The students couldn't tell me what makes their school different, and why they are ranked so high. I wanted to be impressed but it was like they didn't want to impress me!!!

Just a warning if they have a conference again and anyone on here wants to go. Maybe they'll change and have a totally different conference...but I just wouldn't believe it.

that's...wierd...that you didn't get a tour or anything. The one I went to three years ago was amazing and really sold me on it, but hey, then again their priority would probably be interviewees since that's when selling the school really matters. And a pre-med conference is more likely geared towards helping students get into any medical school not really selling the school. Just had to put in my biased opinion since I absolutely love UTSW, lol 🙂

If you come to interview here, it will become very apparent what makes UTSW stand out - for example the superb clinical training starts from day one of medical school. And I don't mean practicing on mannicans (which could be valuable) but working with real patients. The day before you interview you have the option of attending clinical rounds in the morning, so you get to see first-hand how well students are trained. I was amazed at how much opportunity students are given to "run the show" and are treated like doctors, not students.

Research at UTSW is so well-funded and renowned compared to other med schools in Texas, and there are ample opportunities for students to get involved in it during school or in the summer with pay. The first sem is all pass/fail, so it also gives you the opportunity to develop your own study method without stressing too much about grades.

Probably the most unique aspect of UTSW is the college-system. When you start school, the class of 220 is divided up into 6 colleges, so you basically have a smaller class group with which you can bond more closely. Within each college, groups of 6 med students are paired with a physician mentor for the entire four years of med school who brings you into his/her practice and teaches you the clinical aspect of medicine: how to take a history, physical, etc. and is basically a guidance counselor. Given the high stress of med school, having a small group of students and a mentor is really an invaluable asset. Each med student also gets his/her own desk, lockable cabinet space, and microscope with a shared lab bench called the "carrels", and that's something you probably won't see at other med schools.

I could go on and on, but I really hope some of this info gives you a better idea of what makes UTSW such a great med school to be at. If you have any more questions/concerns, please feel free to ask!

One of my friend who got accepted to UTSW before, completed TMDSAS application

and received email from UTSW saying that UTSW admission got her application

from TMDSAS. On later that same day, she received another email from UTSW

that she is invited for interview, even before she completed

her secondary. She had to bring secondary application on the interview day.

So,i think there is something like auto interview invite unless her case was

by error which would have made her really lucky person since she eventually

got in.

Don't lose hope guys!!! One of my firends had a 32 MCAT, got invited for the first interview day, and got offered a seat in April. I know a few others with 31s and 32s who have also been accepted. They had pretty strong volunteer and extracurricular backgrounds which may have offset that "lower" mcat.

hmm that means she was accepted off the waitlist right? The matching is in march, so she didnt match and got into waitlist, then was offered a seat as previsouly matched people withdrew.

That's right. If you take a look at last year's thread, you'll see that there was A LOT of waitlist movementin April/May and only a couple people posted on feb 1 (match) that they got in then. So november-december (pre-match) and April-May seem like the times when most people got accepted.

UTSW is a school with large waitlist movement compared to other medical

schools. I think many people withdraw b/c of the UTSW's notoriously

challenging

courses especially during 3rd year lol. Still, i have heard many more choosing

utsw over Baylor at houston, because baylor is almost bankrupt(and their

attempt to join as Rice medical school failed), while utsw is backed up

by the 3rd richest university system in nation(or world) next to harvard and

yale. Anyway, it is good for those who are willing to take the touch training

which, i think, will help the students become more competitive when they

enter medical field eventually.

How important is the secondary for this school? With respect to the last question, I feel like I've already communicated how I envision myself practicing through the optional essays and personal statement, it's pretty hard not to be repetitive at this point.

For you, it won't matter. You will be receiving an automatic-interview invite.

What are the stats that are needed for an auto-invite? I find it really kind of odd that the public school that is highest ranked in Texas gives out auto-invites to people when others rigorously check over applicants.

This. Their criteria is a GPA 0f 3.7 and MCAT of 32 but I don't think autointerview means anything if your application sucks in general

Oh. Just kidding. No one has gotten one from UTSW yet.
But source?

I'm WAAAAAAY off from auto-invite. I would be surprised if I was in auto-reject. But I am hoping for a hometown discount and a little love from having a Ph Dizzle 🙂.

How 'bout dem Cowboys!!

The admissions dean has said it himself. However, that criteria applies only for in-state applicants.

No more Roy Williams, marion barber, or Leonard Davis. Woot!

Is there OOS auto invite too?

3.9/3.9 39 and really want that interview!!! TMDSAS was a lot of work lol

MilkIsGood... I'd quote you on that now, but I think it'd be sweeter if/when it comes! Haha

Hope you guys are all taking the wait better than me...

Went to a presentation at UTSW today, three years in a row already.

Missed the people I have worked with and the places on campus I had been to.

I am getting too familiar and attached to this school.

I shouldn't be. It would hurt more when there might be no good news.

Don't worry. I'm sure you'll get in. Things have a funny way of working out in the end.

So the autoinvite rumors are true?

Hi, can any med students tell me what the schedule is like at SW for the first and second years? I'm wondering what time classes/labs are over and if you have a lot of time to study on your own, or if more time is spent in the classroom.
Thanks,
Nick

Awwwww yeah!

September 17th (the day after my UTMB interview...) ! Anybody with me?

Just FYI, I haven't turned in my secondary yet, so this was an unexpected surprise.

Also, BMEN, I would be shocked if you didn't get an interview invite soon.

Somone's numbers prob was like "Auto-Invite me!":laugh:, which is freaking awesome

Which means you just have to prove yourself not the 10 year old in your MDapps you are

Ironically, I was going to sit down and finish my UTSW secondary, but now I'm too excited to do anything about it.

Does this mean you dont have to do it ?

Out of all the secondaries it seemed like the most pointless texas one as it didn't really give the school a perspective of you they dont already know. oh well

Actually, now I'm a bit stumped.

I'm thinking about moving my interview date because I want to be able to do the activities they have planned Friday, but the only two available dates right now are 9/10 and 10/1. I'm a bit apprehensive about interviewing on 9/10, since it would be my first interview, but I don't want to push it all the way back to 10/1.

Thoughts?

I wouldnt think there would be any harm moving it to the 1st?

let me know when you switch. i want your 9/17 slot haha

9/17 isn't open for you on the UTSW portal? Uh oh. This means the slots that are available to me right now might be filled up at any minute. Now I'm really feeling pressed to make a decision.

Heh. It's way too early in the application cycle to start freaking me out like that. I'm gonna have some nice ulcers at this rate.

you can change the friday clinical round dates to some date in oct and jan.

congrats on the interview invites!

if you don't mind me asking, when did you guys transmit TMDSAS? I transmitted at the end of May (IS 3.8/34), and I was hoping to get a September invite since I'm swamped in October. I guess they're not going strictly by autoinvite numbers 😕

haha, ever since I came across SDN a few weeks ago I've gotten a lot more anxious >p

Submitted Primary: 5/25
Submitted Secondary: 5/25
Transmitted Primary: 6/2
