Has anyone heard anything about any OOS acceptances? It seems that everyone who posted an acceptance so far is a Texas resident, but I'm just wondering if OOS acceptances follow a different timeline. I am an OOS applicant and interviewed on October 15 and still have heard nothing at this point and am wondering whether or not this is a bad sign. The admissions staff at UTSW seemed pretty vague on interview day about when they'd release OOS decisions...

i am oos and was accepted nov 15 by email

During my interview day Wes said IS and OOS prematches will go out at the same time. They don't really follow TMDSAS timelines. You either hear back between NOv 15 to end of december or after february until class fills/begins

Hello everyone,

I was fortunate to prematch here and this is going to sound selfish but if I didn't get any scholarship money in that initial letter, does that mean I won't be getting any later?

THanks!

Most people do not get scholarships. That is a fact. If people are expecting to get scholarships, then you will be probably be disappointed. Learn to love loans. Believe me, you will become fast friends with loans. lol

I think they said you'd be considered for need based scholarships/grants/loans after you submit FAFSA

I heard back from UT San Antonio a couple weeks ago about an interview, but I haven't heard back from Southwestern. I dunno if I should email admissions or call them and see if they skipped over my app. I'm getting a little bit neurotic about it. I have decent stats, but I submitted my app really late september along with the secondary.

*Corrected from Austin. That was a brain fail on my part*

Austin has a medschool? I am a big advocate for sending an update letter:luck:

Austin doesn't have a med school but I heard that they are going to open one in a few years and that ut southwestern is going to facilitate its opening

So does that mean people that interview at the beginning of January aren't likely to pre-match, and have to wait for the match process??

Another major story broke all the Dallas news outlets about Parkland continuing to brutalize patients. This latest string of incidents occurred after Parkland was placed on probation with CMS’s approved consultants providing safety oversight for patient care. In the Psych ER, a Parkland staff member was caught assaulting and choking a female patient unconscious while being taped on video camera.

In addition, the Dallas Morning News is reporting that yet another probe is being launched to look into whether Parkland officials misled and failed to disclosed important public information before the sale of public federal-matched “Build America” bonds to fund its extravagant $1.3 billion replacement hospital.

This on top of another active probe investigating whether UTSW used unlicensed medical students as paid primary clinicians to practice medicine in the ER at Parkland, outside of their medical school program curriculum. This would constitute practicing medicine without a license. UTSW immediately stopped this program when it was discovered by the Dallas Morning News, but not before the US justice department launched a federal probe into the matter.

Earlier this year, UTSW had already settled another Medicare fraud lawsuit with the Justice Department in the millions.

Links or it did not happen.

It seems so. He said most/all acceptances will be given out before the end of december. More spots will go out in february as spots open up....someone correct me if i am wrong?

does anyone know how exactly the match process works? for example, if i decide to rank utsw first (knowing that they don't give out many spots during the match), does that mean i am less likely to match at my #2? or is precedence given to the applicants in the match process?

....another troll, here we go again:nono:

Yeah, but by quoting his/her message in your reply, it stays on the forum even when the mods remove it...

And, yeah, the annoying DMN troll is back. *sigh*

To the best of my knowledge, how you rank the schools should not have any ulterior effect about whether you get accepted into school A over school B. Schools do NOT know how you rank them - the only way a school finds out your list is if you tell them.

You plug your list into TMDSAS, the computer spits out your rankings and compares it to the schools that accepted you, you (hopefully) get matched somewhere. I would try not to make this cycle any more stressful than it already is by over-thinking how you rank your schools

Well the way i understand it is that as long as you haven't gotten accepted at school#1, your chances to match at others on your list are open, but once you match at school#2, you lose your spot at schools#3,4,5. Same as if you match at school#1, you lose your spot at school#2

From the TMDSAS website
"Applicants holding a pre-match offer who have interviewed at school(s) that did not extend an offer can rank one or more of those schools higher than the pre-match offer school without risk of losing the pre-match offer.
An applicant holding a pre-match offer who matches to a higher ranked school will automatically be withdrawn from the pre-match offer school. They will also be withdrawn from all other lower ranked schools. The applicant will remain open to be selected by schools ranked higher than the school matched to"

That sounds about right. A friend who contacted the admissions office said that Dec. 15 would be the last day that they would hand out prematches in December - don't know if they have any more prematch release dates in January.

yeah I was just thinking that maybe if I was ranked higher than someone for my #2 school and they ranked it #1 that they might get the spot over me based on some numerical ranking system... more of a question about the match *algorithm* than anything else.. but you're probably right about not trying to stress out :xf:

To the DMN troll:

You haven't convinced anyone to not go to UTSW. You are wasting your time. You pursue the destruction of UTSW and Parkland like a religious zealot pursues a crusade. It does not add to your credibility. As stated before by someone else, we do not need your help.

To the rest of SDN premeds:
If the DMN troll has convinced you not to go to UTSW or if you feel that I'm wrong, please let me know. (I mean real premeds on SDN, not some support troll for the DMN troll)

Thanks-

Cel

If we didnt get a merit scholarship with our acceptance, is there no shot left for merit scholarships? I know there is need based aid later on. Without a scholarship though, UTSW is going to be more expensive for me than an OOS school that I'm considering.

I think there are still grants/scholarships given out, but these will come after FAFSA i believe. Also i think UTSW gives most/all OOS students a $1000 scholarship which qualifies them for IS tuition. Somebody second this?

yeah, I think most (if not all) texas schools do this, OOS get $1000 in their pocket and a "scholarship" which covers the extra tuition cost for OOS students. So basically, you only pay in state tuition, and you get $1000.

Got my officialy acceptance letter in the mail and I got a pretty substantial amount of scholarship money!! 🙂 Definitely was ready to be okay with getting nothing. Still in shock! Mailing this form back in ASAP! lol

Congrats! Mind sharing stats/ECs about your application? I'm curious to know what they look for when awarding these scholarships.

Anyone else doing the clinical rounds program this Friday?

Just received my acceptance letter in the mail and a scholarship too! :soexcited: I'm not even going to bother with mail, I'm faxing back the form this afternoon. If you really care about my stats send me a pm.

I got a scholarship as well! I think prematch letters either denoted a $10,000 scholarship a $15,000 scholarship or no scholarship at all. I am wondering about fin aid too. However, as it stands UTSW is the cheapest school on my list of acceptances. One school even gave me a full tution scholarship (increasing with the 3-4% tution increase each year) nevertheless, UTSW is STILL cheaper! God Bless the great state of Texas! I will send my accept letter in very soon (snail mail). However, for those hopefuls out there I am still deciding between multiple schools and will try to make up my mind concerning Texas schools before the end of December. Good luck guys:luck:

Troll or not, it does make me concerned about the environment at Parkland. That said, UTSW is still one of the top schools on my list and I will ask about these developments during second look. The response I get from the students and admin at UTSW will dictate if this school is a fit for me.

Is UTSW awarding scholarships to mostly URMs this year?

Congrats! Mind sharing stats/ECs about your application? I'm curious to know what they look for when awarding these scholarships.

Thanks!

1. No they're not giving scholarships to just URM 😀 (that's ABSOLUTELY crazy to think)
2. EC: college orgs (science related and non), research experience, EMT cert. , working for the past year as a behavioral therapist for autistic children , a lot of volunteering in my community (Dallas)
3. Stats: Reapplicant, 27Q, 3.4 science, 3.5 cum.

For those of yall still waiting to hear back about acceptances, good luck!

agreed.. dumb to think and a discredit to those URMs that got in of their own accord with WAY BETTER stats and ECs than most of the entering class... to think that one factor (race, creed, SEC, etc) is the determining factor crazy to me.

Too bad that URM status is a big reason why some of them get in.

Then why the hell is race even considered?

Then why the hell is race even considered?

No idea

Clarence Thomas has written much about this. Read "My grandfathers son" by him.

Without question, Dr. Martin Luther King was the most influential civil rights leader of last century. He seemed to view people with colorblind lenses. This is the way I view the world.

Also, read "mans search for meaning"
It was written by a Jew in a Nazi concentration camp.
The book breaks down all races into 2: Decent and Indecent men.

Which one are you?

God, please do not let a "URMz rant" happen on a school-specific thread. Cel, I agree that the DMN troll could not turn people off to UTSW. However, I promise what some posters and you are about to start will.

Texas is already known for being backwards and ignorant. Please do not feed the stereotype.

In that case I wholeheartedly retract all previous positions and promise not to post in this thread anymore. I am not trying to to be a zealot or invoke politics into a school specific thread.
I am sorry

I think a lot of us enjoy your posts regarding the process and the encouragement you offer. No need to leave the thread, just leave the URM bs for the pre-allopathic thread. You got into one of the BEST and CHEAPEST schools in nation! You are the envy of most people on SDN. In addition, remember that the scholarships given out are contingent on good academic standing.😉

I'd rather leave than damage the reputation of a school with URM discussion. To be honest, this whole URM thing is a bit of a mystery to me and I don't really understand it.

But anyways, is there any instate people that received a scholarship? When I interviewed there someone said something about giving OOS people instate tuition via a scholarship.

Has anyone completed a background check yet for UTSW (or any other acceptances for that matter)? When do we need to get on this? All I did to confirm my UTSW seat was return the form enclosed in the acceptance letter. Do I need to do anything else?

Also, major props to UTSW for not making me pay a fee to hold the seat! 👍

Congrats on your acceptance.
The background check doesn't come till around May
KTD posted a link to the "unofficial guide to UTSW" somewhere on this thread. It's very useful and gives a timeline from now till when school starts.
