The sad thing is that Baylor has done a better job of brand-naming itself. Outside of TX, I know people who recognize Baylor's name but give me a blank stare at UT Southwestern. :/ Maybe it's because there are 4 UT med schools (UT-Houston, UTMB, UTHSCSA, UTSW)?

You also have to remember that Baylor attracts a larger OOS applicant base --> more students who desire to go OOS for residency --> larger national distribution of graduates, and hence, more recognition from out-of-staters compared to UTSW.

If you look at UTSW's match list, the large majority of its grads stay in state (in fact, many of them opt to stay at UTSW for residency).

I am curious if anyone has gotten in yet post match? I have been checking this site for two weeks waiting to see if they have started yet, with nothing coming through.

All the Texas schools seem to be moving exceedingly slow this year. Hopefully things should get going once financial aid packages come out.

The process does seem to be moving exceptionally slow this year. Two years ago, they had offered 34 post match acceptances by March 25th. It's been dead silent since the match, unless of course they have contacted only applicants outside of sdn, but that seems very unlikely. Given the former, we should expect a lot of action in the weeks to come. Or so I hope!

I'm new to this site, but I thought UT was in Austin. I've heard of Baylor and UT Houston (where Michael Debakey is), but where is UT Southwestern, if it's not in Austin? I've never heard of it?

LOL this thread is under siege by trolls right now.

Seriously! What's the deal with this specific thread. I don't see all this trolling elsewhere. There must be some people with deep resentment, goodness! They really don't have anything better to do with their time?

Dear troll, just FYI, Michael Debakey is no longer there, and it's Denton Cooley at UT Houston.

And just to add, your second statement contradicts the first. You thought UT was in Austin, even with the knowledge of a UT school in Houston. I don't know why I'm wasting my time, but come on!

Nearly pooped my pants a moment ago when I got this email:

Initial Pre Requisite Check and Request for Transcripts:

This review was based on completed courses as reported by TMDSAS.
The review showed the following pre-requisite deficiency(ies):

"Uh oh, did I really forget to take a pre-req?!"

No Deficiencies

:laugh::laugh: me too. The subject line tripped me up till I scrolled down and saw No deficiencies here either 👍

Actually, there are a few discrepancies that must be clarified so that the people at UTSW don't look like we don't know what we're talking about, because some of us do know the facts.

There is a UTSW medical school branch in Austin with a separate Dean, Susan Cox, that presides mainly over Seton Family Hospitals. So, the confusion is justified as UTSW's uncertainty in Dallas may make UTSW make us completely move to Austin if Parkland closes down in the future.

UT Houston still has an entire building named after Michael Debakey, so Debakey is still closely associated with UT Houston.

And lastly, residents of UTSW are actually full W-2 employees of Dallas County Hospital District doing business as Parkland Health & Hospital Systems. So, all these people who think they were accepted into the UTSW residency programs are actually employees of Parkland. Basically, it's the Parkland residency programs for all intents and purposes.

😍Class of 2016!😍

Subtle troll, nicely done. Considering the new Parkland will be done in 2 years, I highly doubt that. And while UTSW is affiliated with Austin hospitals, there is no "medical school branch" there.

And what building is that? Is it the Michael E. Debakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, staffed by Baylor College of Medicine faculty? Or is it the Methodist Debakey Heart Center, which is academically affiliated with Weill Cornell Medical College? You do realize he's dead right?

I just noticed your response is titled "Getting the facts right"; what a joke. Good post Laplace. I'm sure the city of Dallas is beginning construction on a new, $1.3 billion Parkland Memorial Hospital with plans of 'closing it down in the future'.

Lastly, I think it's funny how you claim you are a 'medical student', yet you say you are class of 2016. How exactly did you manage that? You just need to stop, you're embarrassing all of the other hard working, clever trolls out there.

Whoa what? That's not fair! I wish I had that opportunity way back then!

It looks like UT Southwestern and UT Dallas are starting an accelerated BS/MD program this year called UT PACT for up to 20 students: http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/education/medical-school/academics/combined-degrees/ut-pact.html

The requirements are: http://www.utdallas.edu/pre-health/ut-pact
"Admission into UT-PACT is competitive. Students apply during their senior year of high school and are judged on their:
  • Texas residency – only Texas residents will be considered
  • Acceptance to UT Dallas via the ApplyTexas application
  • Secondary application including a statement of motivation and purpose
  • High school grade point average (minimum 3.50 on a 4.00 scale)
  • Standardized test scores (minimum SAT math 550 and writing 550, or ACT 27)
  • Letters of recommendation from a high school guidance counselor, a high school math or science instructor, and one additional letter as a character reference, preferably from a healthcare professional. (No fourth letters, please.)
  • A personal interview, initiated by the UT-PACT office, conducted by university and medical school faculty
  • Application Procedures
  • Secondary Application
  • Letter of Evaluation Form

UT-PACT Program Continuation

Accepted UT-PACT students must maintain:

  • A minimum overall and science GPA of 3.50;
  • The course progression outlined by the UT-PACT office and the student's degree plan;
  • Acceptable performance in the summer clinical modules;
  • A strong record of academic and personal integrity
."

It would have been nice to have this program when I was finishing high school.

EDIT: Dude, it's a SIX-YEAR program to get BOTH the BS and MD. Curriculum here: http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/edume...degrees_distinctions/ut-pact-course-plan1.pdf

So other schools (e.g. UT Houston) have begun waitlist movement... has anyone heard of any waitlist movement from UT Southwestern?

2 months of waiting... <2 months until the June 1st deadline (for tx applicants already accepted to another school to get in off the waitlist).

I'm in the same boat with the June 1 deadline, and I'm starting to get really nervous. I think on last year's thread I saw that the waitlist started moving in early May. I just really hope it's earlier this year!

My guess is the movement will begin early in May, but like you, I would love to speed the process up a bit. Check out the year before last year's thread; it's quite different, so you never know what could happen. I'm certainly not writing off April, although it's looking more and more like this is going to come down to the wire.

UTSW has MS1 through MS4 and PGY-1 through PGY-7s in Austin with basic sciences research.

Asked and answered.

lolno.

There has been some talk about opening up some clinical rotation sites at Brackenridge for 3rd and 4th year rotations, but as of right now, there is no set program for MS3 or MS4 rotations in Austin. UTMB is the only school that has official clinical rotations at Brackenridge.

I also have absolutely no idea why you think MS1 and MS2 is in Austin. The closest thing that Austin has to a medical school is the A&M campus in Temple, and that's an hour away.

Long time lurker here, finally felt the urge to chime in on the discussion.

Since there hasn't been anything in the way of good news lately, I'd like to hear what everyone thinks about the academic colleges. I've seen a similar society system at Emory, and I'm sure others exist elsewhere, but UT Southwestern seems to be the only one of its kind in Texas. Do you view this as a positive component of the curriculum? Have you heard any feedback from current medical students about the benefits/disadvantages of the academic colleges?

Edit: troll's quote deleted

Just stop already dude. No one is buying the garbage you're selling. If anything, it looks like you are avoiding responding to JABWS's post. So you don't like UT Southwestern? Get over it.

You've used this strategy before to keep posts up before. No one is fooled by you pretending to be someone who supports UT Southwestern. Not very clever this time, troll.

Is this a troll calling out a troll that called out a troll?...this is like inception or something...dream within a dream within a dream

perhaps this is old news but i just discovered this video index on their website:

http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/life-at/video/index.html

...i can't wait to start in aug

Dr. Manglesdorf is a real interesting guy. He actually does some pharmacology lectures during endocrine block so its fun to hear him talking about that stuff.

Also, he will insist upon you calling him Davo Mango, like everybody else in his lab.

Notice my previous post. The troll's post hasn't been deleted, so what reason would I have to 'keep a post up' that is already up. Save your false accusations for someone else; a troll is the last thing I want to be.

Edit: I now see that the post has been deleted. My apologies to everyone for inadvertently aiding the troll. I guess the best strategy is simply to ignore them, or don't get tangled up with them as a new member, because then other new members (trolls) will accuse you of being one yourself. Thanks for the advice nmed20. Moving on with the conversation.

One more question I've been pondering. Do you think the new Parkland and university hospital will positively/negatively impact our clinical experience as MS3/MS4s?

Not sure if serious or if this is still a troll....It is hard to find legitimacy in the question about the new hospitals. How could it be anything other than positive??

Positives: new, shiny (!!!), maintains same patient base, better equipment, better environment, shiny (!!!)

Negatives: Logistics, uncertain time frame (you never know when something will be finished until it's actually finished)

Seriously? I'm starting to regret opening an account. Defending my legitimacy is getting annoying!

You don't think transitioning into a new hospital could in any way negatively impact the students' clinical experience? Personally, I'm excited about the prospect of doing clinical rotations in a new, state-of-the-art facility, but it's not unreasonable to think there may be an adjustment period for the staff and faculty. The new Parkland is set to be completed in 2014, at which time I will be an MS3, so this is something I'm taking into consideration. I'd like to think that the impending changes won't interrupt my educational experience; I was just trying to see if everyone else felt the same.

I know there will be adjustments to be made but I honestly don't think anything will negatively impact the clinical experience. The same patients population will be there and the same attendings, residents, staff, etc. I honestly think it will be a pretty neat/enlightening experience to be a part of a new facility like that.

Logistics - never going to be perfect, anywhere
Time frame - that's only before the hospital is open so doesn't necessarily apply to the clinical experience of the new hospitals

And I apologize for jumping to conclusions. In this thread it's hard not to assume everyone that is a new member is the troll.

I tend to agree with you. The new Parkland is actually one of the more appealing aspects of UT Southwestern. Just trying to cover all of the bases.

Has anyone watched the documentary Children's Med Dallas? It's on YouTube for those who are interested. There are two seasons, as far as I know.

Lol. Yeah, I've watched several different documentaries (Boston med, Hopkins), but I just found this one last night. I think it was produced by a local news station. It's not quite as engrossing as the two that aired on ABC, but pretty damn cool nonetheless.

FYI, if you haven't checked your email, the FA packages are out, at least some.

nothing here yet...what is the in-state tuition rate for 2012-13? is it still $15k?

**edit** nevermind i did get the email in my utsw.edu account...IS tuition and fees is $17231

hey...anyone know exactly how to access your utsw.edu email account? The last e-mail they sent gave us a link for the iAIM and student services websites, but not the utsw email service (I don't think)...thanks

So, it says to go to student center to view financial aid package - but when I click 'view financial aid' in student center, then click aid year to see awards, I get a 'null' prompt and nothing opens up...anyone else getting this?....or am I doing something wrong?

They announced the name of the new UTSW hospital to replace UTSW St. Paul University Hospital. It's set to open 2015, and it's going to be called William P. Clements Hospital, See dfw.cbslocal.com/.../ut-southwestern-hospital-to-be-named-for-clements/ for news article!🙂

I also had the same problem with Chrome. Switched to IE and it worked.

My acceptance letter said that the scholarship is guaranteed all 4years provided I stay in good standing. As far as I know, i'd have to requalify for the grant every year based on my tax return information.

I, too, was only able to get onto the site using IE.

On the login page for Peoplesoft UTSW there's a help link. On it there is a list of which browsers and versions are compatible. Apparently the site is very finicky with browsers other than what's specifically on the list. In an email from a tech at UTSW, I was encouraged to use only what was on that list of browsers until the upgrades to UTSW software are completed. Down grading browsers might be the way to go.
