Haha! Had heard about finicky software at utsw when at ms0 weekend...didn't expect to be experiencing it already!!! Thank you for all our help guys! Finally saw my award summary after trying a gazillion times. Lol

This has got to be one of the slowest years for waitlist movement.. Aren't there typically about a 100 spots given out post-Match day?
 
Can any current student comment on if they have heard anything from admissions about waitlist movement? Has there been any movement that hasn't been documented on SDN?

Depends on the rotation, but most of them seems to be 60% clinical eval/40% shelf.

thanks! that's about what it looks like at http://www.southwesternstudents.com/unofficialguide/Home, although i think this is a few years old and not all rotations have the grade breakdown listed. there is a link somewhere showing that ~40% of the class receives an H in their internal medicine clinical eval...do you know if that sounds about right? is it the shelf score that usually makes or breaks a grade?
 
This waiting is killing me. I'm OOS and got accepted into my university's med school back in october but haven't accepted their offer yet. I literally check SDN everyday to see if theres waitlist movement! At this point, I'd almost rather be rejected so I can get my lease signed and affairs in order! If we get accepted off the waitlist super late, will there be spots in the med school apartments still?

I'm honestly not entirely sure what the grade distribution is like since I already had a guaranteed residency spot before I started medical school, but if a general, vague answer is good enough then yes, that sounds about right.

Shelf score matters a great deal but I remember you need at least one clinical "honors" grade to get an overall honors, so balance is important. Also, that's pretty far in the future for you guys so I wouldn't worry about it too hard yet. I'd focus more on drinking fermented beverages and roasting by a pool.

Disclaimer: I'm not a current student, merely a fellow applicant.
I emailed Anne McLane on April 1 about "whether Southwestern had started accepting students post-match." I got a response the next day that there were "No updates as yet."

Admittedly, that was over two weeks ago. But... April 2 is still pretty late for having no movement whatsoever!

I just called the admissions office today and the lady said there still hasn't been any movement...
 
Apparently, last year no one got in off the waitlist till after may 1st. Then about 100 people did in two weeks. I heard this from the admissions office.
 
Lol that's some crazy movement. I wonder why they waited till the end. Financial packages maybe?
 
Probably because many people don't withdraw until the May deadline for holding multiple acceptances

Of all the school where I interviewed at, UTSW seemed to have a large number of current students that got accepted of the waitlist. Pretty much 4/5 of all the students I spoke to said their were admitted between May and June.

Would really like to go here or BCM.
 
Can someone explain to me the point of time in which letters of rec need to be in? The earliest my committee sends out their letter is late June (6/20-6/25). I intend to submit both my primary and secondary apps to UTSW in early to mid May, along with my transcripts. Is this pointless without the letters (e.g. won't extend an interview without them?), or do they only need them before the interview takes place?

late june or early july sounds fine IMO. nothing you can do about it anyway--i sympathize with being at the mercy of your premed committee. i am fairly certain some IIs went out to people before they filled out the secondary, not sure about LORs. i'd read the beginning of this thread to check.

i submitted TMDSAS the last week of july and my committee letter wasn't uploaded until aug 26. like you i was also OOS and i freaked out all summer because it seems like everything happens so early in texas and i was going to be too late...but it worked out for me.

In the cost of attendance, $5719 is allocated to books and supplies for MS1. Could someone detail exactly what is included in that amount? I'm trying to figure out how much loan to take out, and want to minimize wherever I can...

$3200 of that is allotted towards the cost of purchasing a new computer, so if you don't need to buy a new one, you can decline that amount.

Will I be able to use financial aid to purchase my computer?

Yes. As a matter of fact, an amount of $3,200 is automatically included in your financial aid allocation.

Can any current students comment on whether UTSW has some sort of subscription service that allows students to access material/books/anatomy atlases/etc. using the iPad? I've heard from a lot of medical students that it's definitely worth getting one for medical school but I don't know whether it fits with UTSW's curriculum.

I know a couple current students that use iPads. As far as I know they just download the syllabus PDFs and lecture slides from the web curriculum site and use an app to annotate while studying. As opposed to logging around the huge binders of the syllabus PDFs and lecture slide print outs. I'm not sure about accessing atlases and such though
 
In addition to the syllabus and class slides, The veteran dissector (anatomy lab guide with dissection instructions and great photos) is also available as a PDF. Obviously you wouldn't bring your iPad to lab but it would be useful for studying too.

I have an iPad and while I certainly wouldn't say you need one, it's been pretty nice. I mostly use it to look at slides, but I never have to lug my computer to school.

Class of 2016 here I come! I knew I wouldn't be the only one getting an email today. Mine was right at the close of the day.

For those who are interested, I am an in state, non-traditional (6 years out of college) applicant.

No need to apologize, it really makes no difference to me. You've earned the right to evaluate your options and make the best decision possible. Just keep in mind that there are many others who aren't as fortunate as you, so the sooner you make your decision the better. I'm not trying to be an a**, but I don't think there is any justification for sitting on multiple acceptances for more than a couple of weeks. No doubt, it's a tough decision, but eventually you just have to make it.
