Interviewed today. Great school, I would love to go here. I'll try and keep my hopes up, even with the limited number of spots. Someone has to get them right???

Congrats. Can you tell us a little about the interview day, how did you get there, where you stayed, what questions you were asked, what should we expect? Thanks a lot, 🙂

Did anybody stay at the Guest house and how did you get to school for the interview?

Interview invite today, scheduled for early November. Secondary complete September 9, IS, 32M, 3.4/3.5 s/cGPA. Above average in all of the Utah activities sections. I applied and was interviewed last year.

I'm nervous already--this is my top choice school! Any tips for interview day? I obviously need to do something differently than last year. 😎

Be comfortable with who you are and your application --- Done and done

Don't squirm and try to fake it or force an answer in your interview! The interviewers I had were tough, but they appreciated honesty. I felt like they really wanted to see how I handled that kind of pressure. It's difficult to keep that under control when you really want to please an interviewer. Good luck!

Last year I didn't feel very much pressure from my interviewers so much as them just trying to get to know me, and see what the experiences in my application meant to me/how they applied to a career in medicine.

Got my Interview Invite!!! 10/14, Complete on 9/14. In-State Applicant.

Just an FYI most November Interview Dates are gone and December is completely open for those still waiting. I've heard that they don't even give you a response until MARCH? is that true? That is really going to stink to have to put money down at a different place just to wait to hear back from the U. Hoping all goes well at interviews and I get a spot!!!!!!:xf:

I withdrew from consideration at the U today. There's no way I could get the six specific letters of recommendation and they don't count Port 302 as a diversity course. Not much chance for an OOS anyway. Good luck to all of you.

I think they intentionally try to discourage people with their letter requirements, best of luck to you.

I believe some top applicants hear in December. most hear in March I think, but you can get rejected before then.

Hopefully it will be an early acceptance in Dec., but I'm not holding my breath

Last year I was rejected post interview in early March, but I was in touch with a highly qualified applicant from Idaho last year who was admitted in Late December I believe...And yes the 6 letters are brutal but you can appreciate the kind of students the U tries to admit to the program....high value placed on experiences and high moral character 🙂

I went incomplete last year due to the 6 letter requirement, but came back this year prepared! Interviewed during one of the first interview days in September and am hoping for a Nov./Dec. reply, though they made it pretty clear that most would hear in March. Anyone have a sense for the OOS potential post interview?

Has anyone received an email saying that the 3 days they picked were ALL not available and sent a bunch of new dates available ?

Interview Invite! Haven't gotten an email about the day. I think all November dates are gone...

They don't email a confirmation, they will call you to confirm your interview date.

Hey all! I was curious if anyone knew of a thread on here that gave some more information on the school curriculum and student life? I have read through the student handbook and their website but I wanted more of a student P.O.V.

Thanks!

I applied pretty late, I was complete Oct 26, but I have received secondaries from all of the schools that I applied to except Utah. Did any of you guys see a similar trend? Do they evaluate your application more thoroughly before sending a secondary? Also, I have a friend that has interviewed at the U twice and is expecting a third interview. Is that pretty common to interview more than once at their school?

Are you OOS? Took them 11 days to invite me for their secondary but I am considered IS as an Idaho Resident. This will also be my 2nd interview and there were I think 2 individuals there who were repeat interviewers last year. Not sure if its common but for OOS I wouldn't be surprised...or if you're in Idaho because there are only 8 seats for Idaho. Anyways, good luck!

I interviewed at the U last week, and today I received an email requesting an additional interview with me. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Don't take this as completely accurate, as I interviewed a year ago at Utah, but I THOUGHT they said they would invite you for a re-interview if there MAY be a severe discrepancy in scores from your two interviews. It could also mean something completely different so plz don't be hasty reaching a conclusion about this, I just seem to recall that from my interview day.

Yeah, GoZags is right--there was a discrepancy in the scores your two interviewers gave you. The good news is that you already have one high score! Now you just need to nail another interview. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I also remember them saying it could be to get to know you better, which is what my email and Goldie told me. This could be true because neither of my interviewers asked me any personal questions, I had to bring my personality to them.

Interview invite today! Submitted in October🙂

Finally got my secondary in last night. How long did it take you guys to hear back about interviews?

About what percentage of students hear from the U before March? I'm just curious because there is a class I need to take for their prereqs that I don't need elsewhere 🙂 I got the impression most people won't know until march though.

I'm an MSI, what do you want to know?

More or less a good thing, it means that you haven't been outright rejected. After I interviewed I knew that I had blown one of the interviews, I just couldn't click with the interviewer and could tell he didn't like some of my answers. I thought I was done, however I was called back for another interview and got in.

Most people won't, the way it works is they score everyone and from experience they know that applicants above a certain score will receive acceptances and applicants below a certain score won't. Those people will either be rejected or accepted as they are scored. The majority of the applicants fall into the middle group and will not be informed either way until April. Don't plan on anything until the first week of April.

@ WAHUVU - What percentage of your class was accepted off the wait list?

You know I honestly have no idea. I have several friends that were accepted from the wait list but I learned about most of them by my wife talking to their wife. There really isn't any way for me to know without asking people directly, and it's not something we discuss.

Thanks, my second interview went really well and the doctor was really cool. I hope I can get in here, it is my number 1 pick!

This thread is remarkably quiet. I assume people must be interviewing on campus. It seems U of U seeks out an early bunch and tries to accept a top group of applicants early and then the rest receive decision in March. Is this how interviews work too? Do they do an early round and then slow down until later in the season?

I interviewed in early September. From the looks of last years thread, a small group started to receive notification around this time and into the middle of December. I hope those of us that interviewed early will hear something, though they made it pretty clear most wouldn't until March. Has anyone received invites?

From last year's thread, and from my own personal experience with the admissions office, it looks like top applicants will receive acceptances early (Dec/Jan) but everyone else waits until March --- Thats when I got my denial letter last year 👎

How well do you feel U of U's curriculum prepares you for step 1? Also, how is the school as far as opportunities to get involved in community outreach, global health missions, early patient contact and student resources? How are the 3rd and 4th year rotations and do you get a lot of hands on work or is it more shadowing type rotations? And lastly, what is the attendance/dress code policy and are lectures recorded for students? I know I have a lot of questions but I REALLY appreciate any info you'd be able to share with me as a student at the U of U. Best. 🙂

Also bottom applicants receive their rejection letter early. Received mine today. interviewed 1st or second week of September. I had a very very bad interview though so it was expected.

Rejected post interview yesterday. Interviewed on Oct 21st. I was a little disappointed being an instate applicant and all. I thought I had a good application, but just not what they were looking for I guess. Hopefully something else will pan out. Good luck to the rest of you!

Does anybody know if we get an opportunity to meet and speak to some of the students on interview day?

Yes - they have a tour and lunch with current students - the student body is pretty fantastic here not gonna lie

I'm an M1 and haven't yet taken Step 1. I've been told by third year students, that they felt prepared, however. Our exams are in USMLE format, we get lots of them and much of what we do is integrated, much like Step 1.

There are more opportunities to get involved (community outreach, global health initiatives, etc.) than you could ever have the time for or want. If you have an idea for community outreach that does not exist you can form it and lead it yourself.

The University of Utah SOM has very early patient experiences--for us our first patient experience was on our first day of class. Volunteer opportunities at local clinics also exist on day one. A "longitudinal clinical experience" (in clinic once a week for 4 hours) begins the second semester of your first year and goes all the way through to third year clinicals.

The third and fourth year rotations are pretty much standardized at all U.S. allopathic medical schools. There are core clerkships your third year and elective clerkships your fourth year. They are NOT shadowing experiences like the ones you have as a premed, but rather hands on, intense, graded rotations that require you to draw upon your knowledge of medicine and to problem solve. Performance in third year rotations is the single biggest factor of "matching" into residency. The University of Utah SOM takes these years very seriously, and according to virtually every upperclassman that I've spoken with, these years are great ones here.

Attendance is mandatory, which I don't have a problem with. I didn't miss class often as an undergrad and didn't see myself skipping class as a med student either, particularly given the cost of education. Much of what we do is "small group based." If students skipped class in large numbers, it wouldn't be too long before these small group experiences fell apart. I also have to say that my classmates are incredibly accomplished and amazing individuals. I'm glad I get to spend more time around them.

Dress code at the U is the same as anywhere: Professional dress (dress shirt, tie and slacks) around patients and relaxed (jeans and a t shirt) everywhere else.

Lectures recordings are made and posted daily--both audio and video.

Just a quick suggestion for anyone who happens to read this thread: Make sure you take anatomy (and learn it well) before attending medical school, anywhere. Most will have taken it and you will be at a severe disadvantage if you haven't.

Good luck everyone!

I'm sorry to hear that. Did you find out by email/status update or did it come by snail mail?
