VCU is very biased towards folks from Virginia. There's a reason why 48 % of In-state applicants are interviewed where as 8 % of out of state applicants are interviewed. Good luck to everyone! I applied last year to VCU as Out of State with a 3.8 cGPA / 3.6 sGPA and 32 P on the MCAT (11 PS, 10 VR, 11 BS) and was not given an interview maybe I'll have better luck this year but nothing so far 😕 my LORs are pretty strong, I have been volunteering at a hospital for hundreds of hours now. I have been to Northern VA / Washington DC before but don't really have strong ties to Virginia. VCU does not really care about the numbers they honestly have a holistic approach to their interviews and acceptances. I know tons of people with way worse stats than mine that got accepted (they were in state though- including a guy that had a 3.6 and 25 MCAT score from VA). It really depends on if ADCOM were able to built a relationship with you when reading your personal statement, your past, accomplishments and your committee letters. I would go as far as to say GPA and MCAT are maybe less than 50 % of the whole story to them. VCU is huge on committee letters from schools that have Pre-med committees so do not miss out on that by any chance (even though it might be a little too late to get one now?) their website specifically says that you will be at a disadvantage if you miss out on your schools committee letter. This whole interview is all just a crap shoot man any second anyone could get an interview.

EDIT:- Still stuck on maybe status completed 08/02, I had the maybe status throughout last year and it didn't land me any where ughh disappointment. Good luck to everyone and congratulations to everyone that got an interview. I hope for the best for all of us!

VCU has a slight in-state bias, but you can't look at the number of IS they interview vs. out of state. There are a lot more OOS applicants than there are IS applicants that's why the percentage interviewed is so low. HOWEVER, if you look at the make-up of the class it's roughly made up of 45% OOS students and 55% in-state. That's not much of a bias to me.

Even if there is a bias, I don't see how that makes it something to complain about. It is a public school funded in part by the state so obviously they are going to favor their own state applicants. Look at other schools like in New Mexico that do not even accept a single out of stater.

Last time i heard from VCU was when I got the MAY status on 8/4/11

No word since 🙁. Idk what to do

haha its okay....i got my further status 7/14 and i haven't heard anything since....all you august people need to calm down...

MAY status 7/12 here, so, yea, if you received a status in August, I wouldn't worry.

Quick question: I took the MCAT on 7/16 and my scores were reported on 8/16 (last Tuesday). I am still on MCAT hold at VCU (and at a few other schools) -- but I've also gotten interview invites from places I'd been on MCAT hold... so I'm assuming they have access to my scores. One of the schools I'm on hold at said they were waiting for the roster from my MCAT session?

Does anyone know about this and/or know how long this will take? I'm starting to get anxious but I don't want to be too pushy and e-mail the school yet...

I was complete July 27th and haven't gotten any status update since then. Have people who've been complete around then gotten the may or further status?

I was complete 8-2 and haven't received any status update either.

I was complete 07/27 too, received May status 08/01 and got interview invite on 08/16. Just be patient VCU promises a 1 month turn around so wait it out till 08/27 and maybe then give them a call?

Cost of living is relatively inexpensive (700-900 /month rent). Commuting is no issue or you could readily find a decent single apartment downtown for around 900. Medium sized city (big enough where there's always stuff going on but small enough where there's very rarely traffic). Reasonably warm (moderate) climate. The city has a very diverse population (what large city doesn't).

The medical campus is separate from the undergrad campus (separated by a few miles). This gives the medical campus a very different feel, in a good way. It is surrounded by the main hospital, city hall, the justice center, Altria world headquarters, etc. Therefore the majority of people in the immediate area are professionals of some sort. The south and east side of richmond tend to get a bit slummy (nothing compared to NYC though). The west side has a huge shopping center, a really classy outdoor mall, and some higher end apartments.

I'm not in the med school (I'm only applying this cycle) but I work with a dozen or so medical faculty, all of whom are extremely knowledgeable and well spoken. I cannot overemphasize the quality of the faculty (at least in the physiology department, as that is where my experience lies).

Overall, I think Richmond is a happy medium between a large metro and a suburban city.

Thanks for the info! VCU is my top choice, so it just feels great every time I hear something good about the school 😍 I would love to receive an interview invite:xf:

I'm frankly surprised that you haven't yet, considering that you received the VI status. It has to be coming soon.

IF we all do get invites :xf: , we should pick the same date 😀

I want to meet my fellow SDNers.

Haha, I hope we all get invites. I have no doubt that docbrill will eventually. However, it does worry me that I have had the may status for just about 1.5 months and have had no news since.

I got the "very interested" status 7/15 and haven't heard anything since. I called them today and they said to just keep waiting, and that I should hear something very soon.

Yea, I remember you getting it too. When you two didn't get an invite in that first round, it really confused me. Anyways, that was one week ago. Do you think today will have another wave?

Like, 3:10pm PT ? 🙂

docbrill and xATB for sure will get interviews.

But Steve and I have to :xf:

Me too! We can go out for drinks afterward and talk about our interviews 🙂 And later in the cycle, we can celebrate our acceptances... it's so nice to daydream 😳

Steve, I don't believe they go in order. Somebody on this thread received the VI status much earlier than me, and I don't think he/she has heard anything either. However, I haven't lost hope yet :luck:

I hope we all receive interview invites...soon :xf:

That's good to hear. I am sure you will receive your invite very soon, your stats are amazing 🙂

Steve and Kautionwirez, I have a great feeling about you guys. Hopefully you will be hearing good news soon.

Thanks! I'd love to go see the school and meet the VCU students and faculty. :xf:

...Then you can just found your own school. :meanie:

That's right, and I will be interviewing all of you SDNers :meanie: ... jk

I know I will hand out acceptances to everyone on this thread...😍

Rejected today. Given no reason and was asked to "consult my pre-med committee about my weaknesses" OOS. Good luck to everyone else

Got "further" this morning. Seeing that Status Update e-mail in my inbox made my heart skip a beat. Hopefully this changes to II eventually! (Submitted 8/17)

Congrats!!! you deserved it 🙂

Thanks guys! I really hope you receive invites too :luck:

I just got off MCAT hold as of this morning and I am under review... how long does it usually take before they assign a priority score?

Since VCU is rolling admission, I'm going to assume that early invites mean that you are a stronger candidate or that VCU is really interested in you?

Early invites at any school is usually an indicator that they are very interested in you. Congrats on the invite!

Interviewing here in October! Anyone else apply for the fmStat program? I'm very excited about VCU, seems like a really supportive school. Also, Richmond. Gotta be a great environment to learn medicine, and then there's the James River...

congrats to everyone that has an interview! i loled when i logged into their website and saw their update about the chicken sandwich. 🙂

i FINALLY got a complete from vcu!

From last year's thread: The statuses you can receive.

"ok so for anyone confused about the statuses...I found this from last year's thread...I don't know how legit it is but it makes sense. VCU seems to have 5 priority scores and here they are with the messages:

Application Status:

1) "The Committee's file review indicates that they are very interested in your candidacy. There is another increase in the applicant pool this year, but we are trying to get all candidates at your priority score interviewed as soon as possible. Please watch for an e-mail from us regarding a possible interview date."

2) "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are able to grant an interview you will be notified by e-mail."

3) "The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

4) "The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Since they have some reservations about granting an interview, your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

5) "REJECTED"

#1 - you are interviewed
#2/3 - may be interviewed (still not sure how they are different or which is better)
#4 - subcommitee message
#5 - rejection.

This is what I found...hope it helps"
