Can someone give an overview of what the interview is like? What exactly are they looking for?

some people interview before the tour+lunch. you check in at the office, and your interviewer comes to get you. it can either be a med student or faculty, but they're all either on the board or affiliated with the board (i think). interview is ~1 hr open file. very casual... they take some notes but it's more of a convo (let me learn about you and you can learn about me type of thing). like i think i actually learned just as much about my interviewer and his experience at vcu as he did about me haha (but maybe it's bc he also hung out with us afterward). then there's an info session and then we get handed off to m2's to get a tour of the school and hospital and lunch.

Some of you guys might be thinking way too much into this whole "MAY" and "FURTHER" status. I got interviewed and then accepted from the further status and I'm pretty sure the same happened to someone with a may status. In the end of the day if it is meant to be then it will happen be it MAY or FURTHER. Just take it easy guys and good luck!
can you say anything about the interview? i have mine on dec 1 and im so nervous

Did you have the M4 interviewer?

Well you're going to start the day with an introduction and meeting with the Associate Dean of admissions, Dr. Whitehurst-Cook. She is extremely friendly, knowledgeable and laid back. After that you're going to meet up with the Financial aid office in which you will be told over and over again to organize your finances and budget which was very helpful. Two students will then tour you around the school most likely MS-2. The tour is absolutely amazing you get to tour the campus and the MCV hospital. They show you the stimulation room and you get to experience how students learn. Also most importantly you will be touring in the midst of students studying, conversing and running around to class. I think the tour in an essence showed me how happy students were and it really made me fall in love with VCU. I must say the campus is absolutely stunning and there is an extremely diverse environment. You have dental students, pharmacy students, medical students and nursing students all in very close proximity to each other. You will have your interview before or after the tour/lunch based on when they have scheduled you. The interviewer will pick you up from the waiting room. The interviewer is either faculty or a MS-4 and has significant say on your final decision ( therefore, you must stay friendly and professional at all times). The single interview is very conversational and laid back. Even though my interviewer was a little aggressive, he was extremely friendly and understanding. I meant aggressive in the sense that he was asking me challenging questions to test me. Before I entered the interview he had pages worth of notes written down about me, he had tons of things circled and underlined in my primary, secondary application and the LORs from my committee. Everything was on his table at front of him while he was interviewing me but of course I was sitting a little far away and couldn't tell what exactly he had circled or underlined but I saw the red ink every where. I'm not going to lie it should have intimidated me but it really didn't because as a former Marine I've been through rougher times, he was extremely friendly and he was simply putting in a lot of effort to get to know me (which I appreciated). He was also taking down important notes during our conversation. The questions were not just generic questions but questions that really made me dig deep inside myself and I loved it. Honestly, at one moment during the interview I felt that the interviewer knew me more than I knew myself and that is when I knew that the interview was a complete success. Some of the people I talked to had a slightly different experience, their interviewers had a different personality which is understandable. Either way I truly believe VCU and it's admission board put in a lot of effort and time to get to know you and so should you. Go to their website if you're not a local and really get to know the school. Try to see how the schools mission matches with your own if at all. I personally appreciated my interviewer presenting challenging questions because it really let him know more about me. I feel that if the interview is extremely laid back and casual then sometimes a lot of necessary stuff can be skimmed over which can be detrimental because an interview is your last chance to sell yourself to the school. You should not be too desperate or casual just try to stay moderate. By the way VCU has many interviewers so you could have a totally different experience during the actual 1 hour interview. So, please do not assume anything based on my single interview. Just stay positive, enthusiastic and always smile during your time at VCU/MCV. Enthusiasm can get you a long way 😉 just please for the love of God do not be that person that sits there as if they are bored, rolling their eyes, have their shoulders rolled forward with their head tucked down (yes someone did that at my interview day and trust me you do not want to do that when the Associate Dean of Admissions is sitting a couple feet away from you). I am not judgmental but trust me the way you present yourself to everybody on the day of the interview will play a major role in your final decision. One of the main things I have learned from interviewing at 5 schools is that people are always watching so treat everyone well even your fellow interviewees and always bring that positive energy. VCU is an amazing school and congratulations on getting an interview out of thousands!!! Let me know if you need anything else and Good luck!

wow that was way more thorough than I expected. Thanks for the feedback. I agree that a more engaging interview experience can help the interviewer present you in a better light, but at the same time the converse can also apply. It certainly helps to know that not all the interviews are super laid back, so itll motivate me to prepare more for my interview. How did you prepare? Did you just look at some old interview questions and review your responses? Im just worried because i did a mock interview where i gave impromptu responses, and they couldve been formulated a bit better.

Yes, I looked up the old questions from http://more.studentdoctor.net/schools/school/vcu-som/survey/26 and tried to formulate a honest response. I did not write it down or try to memorize any answers but simply exposed myself to the questions and tried to be genuine. Most importantly though I reviewed my primary and secondary application. Just read through it with a neutral perspective and try to see what parts of your application don't make a lot of sense or seem like an interesting topic to discuss. Most likely they will ask you about them because they don't want any unanswered questions in your application. For example my primary application was very focused on my military career. So, I tried to recall a lot of my experiences in the military since 2005 and sure enough I got asked a lot about it. You should formulate answers but don't over do it then you run the risk of typing to memorize the "perfect answer". That's something you do not want to do because people can see past all the bull, you just have to be yourself in the end of the day.

Got the "further" status today, OOS.

Just want to say I really want in on this school, my cousin lives in Fairfax and I've visited Richmond and this area frequently.
:xf::xf::xf:

Thanks flodhi. Funny thing, one applicant fell asleep while the Dean of Admissions was speaking at one of my interviews. It was truly one of the most awkward, painful experiences of my life (and I was just watching him!).

Dean pretended not to notice, but all the applicants were looking at him.

Haha wow yeah I have seen some awkward things happen at my interviews. I have to say that at almost every other interview something weird would happen. Socially awkward applicants, applicants not well dressed, people getting bored or in your scenario other applicants falling asleep. My greatest advice is simply DO NOT be one of those people. You have worked hard your entire life, you've waited for this day to come where you can shine at front of ADCOM. So, don't let it go to waste over something as dumb as this. Make sure to be very well rested, well dressed, maintain your composure and grab something to eat before the interview. At one of my interviews a guy stood up while the Dean of Admissions was talking and stated, "When will we get lunch because I'm really hungry right now". I was like wow are you kidding me!? did you just seriously interrupt the Dean to ask for food? lol any way enough with these stories! I wish the best of luck to everyone!

Is there a facebook group for the class of 2016? 😀

Did anyone else receive the unauthorized access of files with personal info notification? 😱

Any current students know what's the best way to go about immunizations? I know Health Services does the TB one according to the website, but did anyone get it all taken care of there? I'll be visiting VCU a couple of times for apt/home stuff, so would anyone recommend them, or just getting it by your doctor?

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

Does VCU interview everyone at a given priority score before people at lower priority scores? Or does date of completion have any bearing? I'm curious because I've had the "reservations" status since July, and I'm wondering if I have any shot at receiving an interview...OOS 33Q, Sgpa 3.7 lower overall <3.5

I knew several people with the reservations status receive interview invites last year. You have good numbers, your time will come =)

^Reassuring, have had reservations status since July as well and had given up hope

I think getting/making sure all immunizations have been done from your own pcp is best. You can always just stop by the admissions office when you're here to drop off the form instead of faxing or mailing it. I don't know if health services can do all of them for you, you'd have to call and ask if you really want to get it done through the university.

Awesome thanks! I'll try to get everything in ASAP.

I have the same status and similar stats to byhusker, did either of you fill out the institutional action portion of your primary AMCAS? I took "reservations" to be negative, didn't lose hope though, but was thinking maybe it was due to filling out an institutional action.

I did not fill that out, I think I got that status due to being OOS and just an extremely average applicant.

Same, no institutional action. I'm just assuming it's my lower overall gpa. At least we're not rejected (yet)!

By the way Flodhi1, how long after you interviewed did it take to get the acceptance letter? Just curious as to how long I should expect to wait before i find out whether i got in or not.

Interviewed 09/19 and accepted 10/17. However, VCU has multiple acceptance dates and they can accept an applicant on any of those specific dates.

Does anyone know if VCU accepts pre-interview update letters?

Anybody remember what the acceptance dates are? I really liked this school and will go nuts waiting:scared:

Does anyone know if VCU is receptive to update letters? I interviewed in Sept. but was placed on hold.

The Admissions Committee has met to discuss your file. Your application is being placed on hold for action at a later date. We anticipate making offers October 16, December 15, February 1, and March 16.

You will receive no further communication from us concerning your hold status. The next status change will be to offer you a position in the class, to notify you that you have been placed on the alternate list in late-March, or to notify you that the Committee will no longer be considering your file.

We thank you for your interest in our school.

Interviewed a couple weeks ago. What does this mean?! Is this similar to the dreaded "re-review" that some schools do, or does this just mean I won't hear anything until the next date offers are sent out?:scared::scared::scared:

Edit: Sorry guys, that's what I get for not reading back. *doh* So I guess everyone gets this until the next date of acceptances, at least?

Yeah, this. I interviewed over a month ago and got this update tonight. It's the next step before finding out your status on December 15th.

But this is what I don't get: I remember that the adcom looks at your file, and if certain ranking criteria aren't sufficient, you get rejected on the spot. But the wording makes it sound as though you could still be rejected... do they send out post-interview rejections sooner than the acceptance dates? i.e. does this message mean you made it past the initial cut?

No sense in speculating, I know... but I can't help it :meanie:

As far as I know nobody on this thread has received a rejection after the hold message (at least not before March). Chances are if you receive this message you are either accepted or wait listed. People who are rejected post interview receive a rejection status, but not a hold message. Good luck!

i was under the impression that they either reject you via email OR you get the status (and you either get accepted/waitlisted)

Might be true. I don't know exactly how they reject, but the important part is that once you get this status you are most likely either accepted or waitlisted.

I've had the further status since Sept, and haven't received any update email. Should I email them or would they not prefer that? Any info would be great.

thanks and happy thanksgiving!

For the status e-mail for the hold, the rejection is in regards to the end of the season when they make the waitlist. They make a cut-off before they make the waitlist, so people are cut before it is formed. But at this point you are either accepted or on hold for the next date....and if you make never of them....then it's either waitlist or rejection.

I've had the "may" status since August...anyone else is the same boat? time for an update/interest letter or should I just wait it out?

Woohoo! I got an interview invite today!!! Keep the hope ALIVE guys!!!

For those wondering: 30O/OOS, submitted 9/27, "MAY" status 10/3, II on 11/28.

Just got an II! I was complete 9/9, got "may" status on 11/18, invite 11/28. OOS 32O/3.8

There are a lot of interview dates, don't lose hope! I have conflicts with all the December dates, so January it is!

Unfortunately wait it out. VCU won't actually take update/interest letters at this point sadly. I sent one last week and they emailed me today that they will only take new updates if it pertains to coursework you recently completed.
