How do you apply for this program and is there an OOS bias? What kind of stats do I need if I am OOS applicant? Any current students who applied OOS in previous years? I know Cali schools are hard to get into. Do we apply to UCLA and then select somewhere else on the application for this program?

I'm interested in applying to Drew, but I'm not sure if I have the EC's to get in and showcase my willingness to work with the underserved. My two EC's dealing with the underserved are:

Occasional free clinic volunteer in city
Founded club at university to fight obesity and started afterschool exercise program for intercity school kids

Is this enough to get a look at Drew?

I would think ECs with the underserved is not a requirement, it is just a plus.I did not have any ECs with the underserved but I got in. The thing is you have to have a passion to serve the underserved, more importantly urban underserved, keeping with the school's mission.

If I remember right you can choose it from the list of schools while doing the primary, you do not apply to david geffen UCLA to get into charles drew. They do take OOS students but you definitely see more IS students. With only 24 spots available, it is definitely tough getting in being an OOS applicant.

Drew has its own AMCAS drop-down option. You apply to the Drew/UCLA combined program directly: "UCLA/Drew Medical Education Program." You also apply to the PRIME program directly. OOS doesn't affect your application at *most* Cali schools; but I guess it does here, probably in large part because they're in dire need of peeps to stay in the hood (Compton, Inglehood [mah home town!], etc.). GL

Anyone get a secondary from here yet?

Nope. I looked through last year's thread and they didn't come out for a couple more months. I think they do things even more last minute than UCLA.

Hmmm, not sure if I should pre-write this secondary. I'm OOS and I know UCLA/Drew is competitive so I might not get a secondary. But if I were to get a secondary, I REALLY don't want to do it during school...which is in 2 weeks

Same dilemma holds for UCLA

Do you think it'll be the same as last year's prompts?

Has NO ONE seriously received a secondary yet? I'm rather surprised...I've been prewriting all of my other secondaries and was really hoping someone would post this one soon... Hrmph!

Their site says they don't start sending out secondaries till September. I want one too!

What was last's years secondary so we can have a clue if it is the same? Thanks.

Is the admission process different from UCLA since you send in two separate primaries? What's the real difference between DREW and PRIME?

Yes, they're each different. I'm not sure what's in the PRIME secondary yet, as I've not received one. See above for last year's Drew secondary, which should be the same this year. Drew is different in that you rotate at Drew affiliated sites during MS3 and MS4, not your traditional UCLA sites. PRIME rotates at UCLA affiliated sites during MS3 and MS4, as well as having an MPH or other Master's degree automatically intertwined with the program as a requirement, a more faculty-track program; at Drew, it's optional and more of a community-track program.

Hope this helps. I'd elaborate, but am strapped for time ATM. Cheers.

Dude, my eyes are seriously spinning from all of the UCLA programs. So confused.

What is the main difference between Charles Drew vs. Prime other than a masters degree?

See below. Think Compton, South Central (Drew) versus Downtown, Van Nuys (UCLA).

Oh. I just found out that the REAL major difference is that Drew is a historically black college and university. I called 4 different people who work in admin and not one person mentioned this.

I had no idea who these people who are.

Now, I am seriously deciding about submitting my primary to them. It might be a waste in money.

Why would you think that? If it's based on an assumption that they only accept minorites or something along those lines, that's not the case. They evaluate your fit with the class based on your entire application. GL

It would be cool to go here, I went to high school across the street.

I got the secondary today. Do you know if they send the secondary to everyone? Thanks!

I haven't gotten one. When were you complete?

That is awesome! Congrats! I am not 100 percent certain when I submitted my primary application. In my original batch of applications, I only applied to Geffen as I did not know about the other programs and had done a lot of research with the most amazing doctor who works at Geffen. I think I applied to Drew when I was completing my Geffen secondary - around the end of July - when I started to learn about the different programs.

And I am still wondering if they screen before sending secondaries?

From their website:

"After an initial review by the Admissions Committee, a secondary application is sent to a select number of applicants. The secondary application allows prospective students to describe their activities related to the Charles Drew University’s mission."

Got one today too.

Ah well, super congrats! That's really exciting. It looks like such a great program. Hopefully I'll hear something soon as well. Best of luck!

Someone who got the secondary please post the prompts. I prewrote these but it seems like the character limit was raised from 800 characters.

XD Though we were too. Crazy long secondary. I got Geffen a little more than a month ago and it was nothing compared to this.

Did you or anyone else apply to PRIME? I'd really like to know what that secondary is. There's no thread for it specifically...unless I missed it?

No, I didn't apply PRIME. Just regular Geffen and Drew

Thanks!
