I did a quick googlemaps of Drexel to a random "downtown" hotel. Came up with about a 8 mile commute. Is that about how far Drexel students typically travel for things to do on the weekend or after an exam?

There's a shuttle that goes to Hahnemann, which is pretty Center City-ish. It takes about fifteen minutes. More or less depending on traffic. 76 is ugly sometimes.

I'm gonna be at Drexel next week and I'm planning on taking the train from Airport to Center City to hotel. Any suggestions on where to get a cheese steak? 🙂

As someone who grew up 15 minutes out of Philly for almost my entire life, I have to say Pat's and Geno's are very overrated. The best is undoubtably whichever smaller, lesser known local joint in Philly you prefer. I really like Jim's Steaks on south street.

Ok cool, thanks. Does the drexel shuttle go anywhere near there? It's about an hour on the train from my hotel.

Don't think the shuttle goes near it. If you start at Hannehman Hospital, you can take the broad street line down to south street, then go down south street to Jim's, shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes. Depending on when we get done, we could take a trip down there, I'm pretty sure you interview the same day as me (28th).

Yup, 28th for me too. I'm really excited to see the school. It's one of the schools that, if accepted, I'll withdraw 99% of my other interviews.

Luckily I have interviews at three of my top six right now (Drexel, BU, Loyola) so it would be great to get into one of them. The other two are in my home state (one is a super reach) and the final one is Tulane.. Already got rejected there though.

Congrats on the other interviews, BU didn't show me the same love they did for you 🙁. You're in the enviable position of already having an acceptance I believe? Must take a lot of the edge off these interviews haha. Are you interested in the PIL at Drexel?

Sorry to hear about BU.. I've seen a lot of highly qualified applicants rejected this cycle and it seems impossible to figure out what BU is looking for. Yea, I do have a DO acceptance, but it isn't very high on my list of schools I'd like to attend. It certainly helps though 🙂. PIL is just Drexel speak for PBL, right? From what I've read about it I am actually pretty interested in it. When I first started researching med shools I was kind of scared/intimidated by PBL and figured lecture would be better. After more consideration though, I think PBL or at least a mixture of PBL/lecture would fit my learning style more. Imo PBL = constant engagement and I think that's very important.

Are you interested in the PIL curriculum?

I'm not too beat up about BU, I'm honestly a little glad they were honest and just gave the rejection outright instead of making my keep hope for some of the other schools I'm definitely getting rejected from.

I am interested in PIL myself actually. I looked back at my college career and noticed that every time I studied for a major test, it was always with a group of 2-3 classmates and we would work through the material together. We bounced ideas off each other and each brought something unique to the study group. I saw a video of the PIL program in youtube and it actually reminded me of that, so it sounds like PIL is very similar to the type of studying I do anyway.

If you get an interview for Temple, you should definitely schedule it for 10/11, would be cool to meet someone multiple times on the interview track haha.

Yea I noticed BU is really fast about decisions. I still havemt been rejected from washu, though I just know its coming sooner or later.

I actually sent temple an in the area and they said theyd get back to me if they could accommodate.. never did hear back.

Hows the train system there? I plan on taking it to and from the airport.

Me too! 🙁 Not sure if I should book my flights now or wait until Monday to see if Temple gets back to me.

I had a mini panic attack immediately after reading this post. I couldn't remember actually booking my flight/hotel to Philly. Just checked though and all my reservation stuff is in my email.

Forgot to mention that Chinatown is very close to Hahnemann if you want to hit up some Asian cuisine. 😀

Is Philadelphia known for having good Asian food? I've never had a "real" cheese steak and though the ones in St. Louis are good, I'd like to see what the "real" thing is like.

Is there a train that goes straight from the med campus to the airport? Too lazy to check Septa right now.

For my interview trip I grabbed a cheese steak at a place called "Campos". In my opinion, it was really good. It was also close to a lot of historical buildings if you're planning on checking out some history during your trip, my favorite being the tomb of the unknown soldier. I should note that I'm not even close to a local when it comes to Philly and highly recommend you don't take my advice and ask someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

I don't plan on venturing too far from the hotel. I like to spend most of the day resting and preparing for my interview. Thanks for the input though, I'll see if I can make it there!

I am anxious to hear your review of the interview day. I remember reading your Nova review prior to my own and it put me at ease. Good luck!

Just relax. You guys/gals will all do just fine. I saw a couple applicants last week and they looked really nervous (could have been that they were watching us open up the spinal cord of our cadavers in gross). Don't be like that. Smile, enjoy the day looking at Drexel, and be yourself. Everything will go the way it should.

I've heard it takes them up to 4 weeks. I am still waiting on mine too. I called them and didn't get a response. I've emailed them and still have not gotten a reply after 2 and half weeks. I think we just have to sit tight and wait... The good thing is that they don't have essays on their secondary, so one you get it, you can just fill out all your course and info and send it.

Anyone else still waiting for the secondary to be sent? Does anyone know the turn around time to be reviewed after the secondary submission?

I got a "complete" email 2 days after I submitted my secondary.

"Thank you for your interest in the Drexel University College of Medicine. We are pleased to inform you that your file is complete.

Your file will be reviewed as soon as possible. We endeavor to make decisions in a timely manner, however, we have many files to review. Please allow up to three months for an update."

What percentage of the class does PIL?

Out of a class of 260, there are typically 50-60 students that do PIL. They also said that there is a cap of around 60-ish for the PIL program, but that has never been a problem. You can switch between IFM and PIL at the beginning of the year to see which one you like.

Or at the beginning of the second year... but you have to take courses over the summer catch up with the IFM people

I was interested in the PIL going into my interviewer. But after talking to a couple of students I was kind of discouraged. Seems like there is a lot of a isolation between IFM and PIL students and I don't want to be stuck with the same 50 people for two years....

All in all Drexel is a great school though. I truly enjoyed my interview there! Hoping for an acceptance now. :xf:

Is there a way we could sit in on a session of each (IFM vs PIL) during the interview day or on a "second look" day? Does Drexel even offer a second look?

Not sure if they have a second look day.

They let us sit in an IFM lecture but not PIL. Someone asked if they could go see a PIL group in action but I guess the classes don't convene until later in the day (? I could be making up. There could have been another reason) so we didn't get the opportunity do so.

This is ridiculous. It's been more than 3 weeks now since I got verified...

Got an II by checking my status update (11/19)
Was completed 8/15
Stats: 3.60S, 3.61AO 3.61Total; MCAT 33Q

I'm excited to interview here. I almost didn't apply because I figured I didn't have much of a shot.

I was just wondering if anyone who works with the admissions office or has had an interview could take me through what to expect on interview date (beyond what the agenda is on their website). Thanks!

Comgrats on the ii everyone.

Just to sort a few things out for you guys:

It's actually harder to switch from IFM to PIL after first year than vice versa. We have completed all of our clinical skills (full H&P) by then while IFM has only learned history taking, and they have to do all of that and learn how to do the small group process (which you just figure out as you go if you start PIL first year.) To go from PIL to IFM, there are a couple academic gaps that we fill by taking exams, and maybe a few more stats and microbio lectures (relatively minimal, maybe a couple weeks' work?)

The limit on PIL is actually in the low 60s, it's unusual to have classes as small as this year's. PBL interest waxes and wanes. FWIW, I think Drexel does PBL very well, with plenty of lecture support and very little in the way of required classes that aren't worth your time.

Also, you really aren't that limited in terms of socializing - it's more self-imposed than anything. You have friends where you live and friends that you met during orientation and friends from student groups. It's all what you make of it. You can be really involved, attend lecture all the time, whatever, in either curriculum. I'd say about the same amount of IFM people are here daily as PIL people are, so you'd be limited to about the same number of people if you'd plan on coming to campus regularly. (That's my take on it/my experiences, at least.)

You'll have a couple chances to see what PIL groups are like post-acceptance. There are an accepted students day in the spring, where you can do a PIL group with current students and facilitators, shadowing days with a current PIL student if you express interest, and the chance to do one during orientation if you haven't had a chance by that point/come in late off the WL.

Generally, PIL1s meet MWF mornings and PIL2s meet TuTh mornings. Sometimes it gets switched up if the schedule requires but that happens rarely and you know about it at the beginning of each block.

Also waiting for secondary, verified 9/15 3.74 34 mcat

I was verified a few days before you and haven't gotten a secondary either. I just want them to take my money, is that so much to ask?

Oh wow. I was just looking at your MDApps and we have very similar stats, were verified around the same time, and applied to a lot of similar schools :highfive:

did anyone else apply for MD/MPH program?

AiyaTuc, how was the interview day broken up? Was it a full 8-5 day where you meet with the dean first, then go to class, lunch, tour, essay, then two interviews?

PS I'm interviewing at Jefferson the same day you are :xf:

I interviewed on the first day, so I don't know if they've changed it since then, but I thought the day was a little unorganized. It starts with the essay (NO BREAKFAST -- eat something in the morning), which is followed by the admissions presentation. That is followed by a tour of the building. Some students (including myself) had to break out from the group at various times to catch the shuttle to Hahnemann for the faculty interview. After that, you come back and do your student interview (which is basically just lunch) whenever the students are available. After both interviews, you're done. I finished at around 1pm-ish.

Good luck, and I'll see you at Jeff! 😀

Do they explain the process by which people are accepted, waitlisted or rejected post interview?
