NYMC sent me an email this morning informing me that there have been cancellations and asking if I would like to have an earlier interview date (4/22 and 4/25). So, they are probably still a bunch of spots. I'll be cancelling my interview as well (4/29). Good luck to all of you!

Just interviewed here yesterday and I LOVED it. Great campus. Great staff. The MMI interview format was different, but I honestly preferred it. I hope to hear from them soon!

I got an II yesterday. I scheduled for 5/6 and I'm looking forward to it! Since it is so late in the cycle, is there a reasonable chance of gaining an outright acceptance, or is it more likely that the interview is just for a spot on the waitlist? Any input appreciated. Thanks!

II this morning! Definitely a surprise! Looks like there are dates open until 5/9.

(App fully submitted by 8/5, marked complete by 10/15)

I wanted to allay your concern regarding the waitlist. My understanding is that NYMC typically takes a good number of people off of its waitlist. However, it is ALSO typical that they interview into the first week of May; so this isn't something that's unique to this year.

Here is one source I can provide: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=625428&page=33

I find it impossible to reach the admissions office, they are always busy conducting MMIs. Does anyone know when is best to reach them??

I really don't know, but my guess is either before or after the interviews start. Have you tried calling at around 9am? And after 4pm?

Good luck!

Try calling them on a day that isn't Monday or Thursday. I think they interview on only those days.

Do any current students have insight on the MD/Ph.D program at NYMC? Feel free to PM me, if you please.

"The medical center, which is located 15 miles north of New York City in Valhalla"
Did this happen here?

This was awful. Growing up in the area, I was around when this happened and I remember it launched a huge program to update the safety practices around MRI's and really hurt the hospitals name. Today though, this isn't something most people bring up when you mention WMC. Most people in the area see WMC as one of the better hospitals.

Been reading through old posts and threads

Seems like most people don't really want to go to NYMC

Anyone want to talk about why it has such a bad reputation?

I don't think it really has anything glaringly wrong with it. It's just not very well ranked, doesn't really have anything special, has no undergrad, and is located in a boring suburb. I know MD is still MD but it's just not as attractive as other schools.

This may just be me but the fact that its in a small suburb and focus mainly on teaching medicine is something i find attractive.

Also I asked the students when I was interviewing if they would choose the school again (assuming they had a choice) and they all said they would (which I take as a vote of confidence)

Yeah, everyone appreciates different things. This is just, like, my opinion man. :)

I think rankings are really arbitrary. What really counts are match lists and student satisfaction which NYMC does well in both categories.

Calling Westchester a boring suburb is not an accurate statement. Valhalla is about 20min out of the bronx, 30 from manhattan. White plains is a pretty large city, as is Yonkers, as is Port Chester, Mount Vernon, and so on. While Westchester definitely is not NYC, it has a lot of the same conveniences and cultural attractions. I would think that short of attending a school located in the heart of a city, NYMC is really as close as you can get. IMHO its location is perfect in that you are as close to the city and countryside as you can be, but just outside enough to really focus when you have to.

That said, most of the clinical training sites are very active hospitals. Many students elect to live in NYC in their third and fourth years.

I really liked NYMC when I visited during my interview. I think too many people are down on West Chester. Valhalla is kind of crummy but White Plains is close and a nice city with lots of things to do. And NYC is a 40 minute train ride. Plus the chance to do rotations in NYC is huge for me since I have family in Manhattan. I also like the close knit atmosphere on campus

My online status has said "Final Decision Sent" for a while but I never received anything. Decided to send an email and just got a response today telling me that my application is still being considered... they wouldn't be offering interviews this late in the game would they?

The MMI format really extended the season.

I've been talking to a NYMC student, and he was telling me about their curriculum. There are small things about the curriculum that is not really optimized and is not very favored by the students.

Definitely was a reason for me to withdraw my NYMC interview.

For me it was the atmosphere much more than ranking. It's definitely a school where fit matters. People either love it or hate it, but I couldn't really see myself living in isolation with just med students. I can definitely see how some people would love it but I need a city around me. The traditional curriculum was also not encouraging

Hey everyone,
I am a current first year medical student at NYMC....I am writing this post up because I live in a 3 BR house about 2 miles from campus and am looking for a third roommate for the upcoming school year (lease starts 8/1/13 for the year). The house is a great place to live (big, close to campus, backyard, dishwasher and laundry, lots of common space and driveway and the landlord is cool and has rented to NYMCers for a while). My roommate and I are both medical students as well as fun loving, easy to live with, quiet and respectful guys who take school seriously but also know how to kick back and have fun during the down time. If you are planning to come to NYMC this fall and are interested in living off campus, then this is an ideal opportunity for you. Send me a PM for details etc etc. Thanks!!!

Also a quick comment on the school.... I love it here, the teachers really care about the students, the community is close knit, on campus housing is good, NYC is close (my girlfriend lives there and I see her on average 2-3ish times a week) and most important we do very well as a school on the USMLE part 1 and in our matchlist (this is what really counts when picking a med school, not where its located or what people "think" about it, or its "reputation"). You go to med school to become a good doctor (a clinician if you come here, NYMC focuses more on producing patient oriented physicians rather than academics) and to get a residency you desire and career you will enjoy...and this is what NYMC excels at. The BS people peddle about it being a "safety" school simply is not true, as we received 10,000+ applications last year and accepted ~450-500 for a 200 person class. You do the math (500/10,0000) is a small percentage. PM me about the house or if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer. :woot:

Not sure how you get the vibe "most" people don't want to go to NYMC. Every other post on the thread is people excited about being accepted. Nor did I know that we had a "bad" reputation. After finishing 3 years here and being in a ton of different hospitals across NYC, most people in NYC respect our school for our great match list. As it has been stated a billion times, rankings don't matter and the match list is the only thing that does. I don't know what basis you have to make these claims, but you should feel lucky that a school this late in the game is willing to interview you considering you haven't been accepted anywhere.

I'm sorry but it's probably too late to transfer out

The ADCOM did send the email to some wait listed applicants about whether they wish to remain on the wait list or withdraw on 04/15. Has anyone else on the wait list received the email after that day or recently? My guess is that they should have sent it to all wait listed applicants if they were "in the process of updating their wait list."

i got that e-mail too. my guess is that it really isn't significant otherwise we would've already heard something by now. they will most likely send that e-mail to the rest of the WL applicants at some point
