Haven't even read it, but just got to work and saw this posted about curriculum from the Dean of OHSU

http://www.thedalleschronicle.com/news/2013/apr/11/guest-comment-keeping-rural-health-mind/

edit: Ehhh, article doesn't have much meat about what we as students would like to know, but does say they are going to expand class size. Didn't know they were looking to do that in the future, 132 already seems quite large.
The more chances I have to get in the better 🙂

Also, on my interview day, someone specifically asked Dr. Morris (the dean of admissions) about curriculum reform at OHSU and lets just say it was the most vague answer ever.

And they're now trying to revamp the whole curriculum, to take the emphasis off of primary care and more onto specialties. Lots of hand waving, but that's what it sounds like.

I served on one of the curriculum reform committees at OHSU, so maybe I can be of some help here.

OHSU is revamping it's curriculum for many reasons, but a few big ones I've heard are: (1) to cut out redundancy, (2) to keep up with revamps at other medical schools, (3) to make the best use of the new medical school space, which will be set up mainly with circular tables so that students can interact, and (4) because there is a new dean of the medical school, and he has been very proactive about change.

The reason you probably received vague answers about the curriculum was probably because the process is still ongoing and there aren't any hard and fast answers yet. The process started with 6 specific committees (with student, PhD, and MD representatives), and they each tackled one area of curriculum reform (integration of basic/clinic science, student assessment, etc). These committees then sent their suggestions on to the larger steering group for curriculum reform.

So far, it looks like the curriculum is going to shift around a bit. It is very likely that lecture-based learning will be compressed to 18 months so that students can begin clerkships earlier. It is also very likely that clerkships will be punctuated by brief "intersessions" (a few days at the end of clerkships) that will allow students to discuss the basic science that is relevant to select cases they've seen. There will also likely be a mandatory scholarly project for students that can be based in basic science, clinical research, epi, etc. Aside from that, courses will probably be revamped so that the vast majority are organ-system based. This is largely in response to student feedback that indicated how much more students like the current MS2 year (organ system based) than the MS1 year (basic science-focused).

Other ideas are still being tossed around, but very little is certain at this point. All I can say is that OHSU has tried very hard to take what students want into consideration during this process. Honestly, I can say that very few of my classmates had big qualms with the curriculum when I was in my medical school years, but that the administration always made a big deal about student feedback. Some things are broken (like the policy to only offer formal tutoring to students who have failed an exam), but that is largely because the school pays the tutors, and they don't want to sessions to become so large that they aren't helping anyone. From what I understand, peer tutoring is open to everyone and is an option for those who don't qualify for formal help.

Anyway, if anyone has more specific questions, feel free to PM me. I don't want to toss out too much speculation on a public forum, but I did want to clarify a few things.

I recently talked to a Radiologist friend from Florida (who is retiring soon), he went to University of Michigan way back in the 80s. He told me his class size was over 200 and the administration could not be more disorganized ...but he graduated with under 20k in debt!

Maybe students are so upset with the admin because they cost so much $$$. It puts people on edge. Some disorganization for a discount in tuition/fees please.

I can imagine it would've been hard to be organized with that many students if your staff was small especially working with the computers in the 80s

I'm getting blue as May 15th draws closer 🙁 I dread the possibility of being rejected (again) or end up somewhere crappy on the alt. list. Sorry to all of those who are struggling through this as well, this cycle has been grueling. Just trying to stay positive ...

Yeah it will be rough to get a rejection after being on hold for 7 months...
May only positive news find its way into your inboxes and mailboxes in the coming weeks :xf:

Only 3 more weeks 'till May 9th!

Hopefully we hear on that day and don't have to wait till May 15th :xf:

Good luck to you SDNers on hold I have followed you via this thread and feel a sense of comradery because of this! Also hopefully everyone waiting for a post-interview decision hears good news soon!

Seriously...I am hoping for hearing soon and it being good but also bracing for not hearing then and it also being bad news

Yeah, I am anxious for news, but I feel like I have become indifferent at this point in terms of which school I go to as they are both great. Yes, I would love to stay in Oregon for family/personal reasons, but would also be excited to go to UCF just to experience a different part of the country. I know it's out of my hands at this point, so there is nothing I can do but wait and see.

How I feel waiting for my post-interview decision...

They recently changed their HTML-Java interface to prohibit such practices. Try following your photo, right clicking, click properties, copy the source, and paste as you did above. That will get rid of the google link which is why it's not working.

I got it haha!

Past years trends of hearing the week before on Thursday.

You're right. I hope the past is an indicator of what they are planning this year. After looking at last weeks thread and a calendar, it looks like the final acceptances roll in the Wednesday (May 8th) and Thursday before the 15th. Waitlist rankings come out on Thursday/Friday.

I'm 5 weeks post interview tomorrow. I'm checking portal like a fiend. They will update me as soon as a decision has been made.... and then I shall update you all.

Good luck to you Vena I interviewed with you that day and remember chatting with you about your kids and family, hope all is well!

Wow, no news all week? Wonder what's going on.

Maybe the interviewees who haven't heard back yet will just hear when all us holders do?

Pools not that small... Someone had to have interviewed on 3/13 or 3/15. I bet they just like to make us sweat :meanie:

Vena and I both did I have yet to hear something, can't speak for her. I also know someone who interviewed in February who hasn't heard so who knows.

I haven't heard anything either.

Small SDN sample pool? Ohsu just wanting to make us all sweat?
Even if there are no status updates on SDN, I have been watching the size of the 2017 FB page and this has grown in the last week to now 43. So my guess is people are hearing and accepting.

Email, and portal it must have been almost exact same time I ha been checkin religiously all day haha!

I really hope I hear soon! I have scholarship interviews the next two weekends and I want to be able to give a solid answer about what the heck I'm doing with their money.

Congratulations to you. I have been lurking around here for about a week. I am sure you have put this somewhere earlier before, do you mind if I ask if you are in state or oos?

I also interviewed on the 22nd so here's to hoping for good news next week. (My freak out out mode is hoping for Monday)

Well hello, fellow 22nd-er!

OOS, and no worries.

Has anyone head anything about scholarships since December?
With such limited scholarships I
Would be surprised if anyone has heard anything lately I think there are only around 5 total scholarships
