I am an IS applicant with a 30 mcat and 3.6 GPA. I have not had an interview, and had the "remain under consideration" status for a solid 2 - 2.5 months now. Starting to get a little concerned.. Anyone else out there in this position?

Yup, similar situation, though I am OOS -- wondering how much of a difference that will make. It seems to be a promising status, but the amount of time it's been up has made me a bit concerned, too. Fingers crossed for the both of us!

Did you apply to USA as well?

When did you submit to AMCAS? When was everything complete (supplemental, etc)?

I'm wondering if UAB is now broadening its interest in OOS students. It used to bias towards instate, but maybe not so much anymore?

I interviewed in early October and am still hoping for an acceptance. A friend of mine was interviewed shortly before I was, similar stats, and was accepted right away. She's a female and she thinks that was an edge since UAB is "male-heavy".

I submitted amcas late august, and had secondaries complete by late october. And yes, I interviewed at South early in November (loved South btw). I guess we can only be patient from here!

Just called and left a message trying to get a status update. I'll update with any new info if I receive a return call... :xf:

Thanks!!

Do we know how many have already been accepted and how many will ultimately be accepted?

You're very welcome.

Sadly, we don't know how many have been accepted yet. But the end-total (class size) is posted somewhere. I wanna say 200? Don't quote me on that, as it's off the top of my head without any sources on hand. Plus, with all the different campuses, I imagine it's far more than that when grouped together, right? Perhaps someone else could provide a better answer...

I am pretty sure that on their school of medicine website it says that the current class size is 176 students. The different campuses don't come into play until years 3/4, but the overall class size even with all the campuses taken into consideration I believe is 176.

The class size is currently 176, but I believe it will go up either 10 or 20 this year because they are adding the Montgomery campus. I am not sure on this, though. I'll go ahead and add to the speculation as well, haha. Last cycle they tried to make the class female heavy by accepting a lot in the beginning (from what I gathered), and our class still has like 30 more males than females. So I would bet that they are again trying to get as many females committed as possible first. In addition, I do think they have changed their approach towards OOS students. They still can only end up with a certain number of OOS (around 25 I think, although that may go up this year if the class size increases) because UASOM is state funded. However, they can go ahead and accept 90 (hypothetically) OOS students right now, with relative confidence that only about 25 of these will end up committing here (probably because OOS tuition is absolutely absurd). And since they never have more than 176 acceptances out at a time, a large portion of those could be in the hands of OOS students. Thus, the whole thing becomes a waiting game for a lot of people, and tons are accepted off the waitlist in the end. A few years ago I think they misjudged their OOS acceptances and ended up sending too few and receiving too little interest, so they are now overshooting on the OOS acceptances if anything. Just my speculation, though.

Has anyone who is a reapplicant received an interview yet?

Same here. Interviewed/waitlisted last year and have heard nothing. My status just changed to remain under consideration for interview. Over the past years, it has seemed that reapplicants have received interviews late in the cycle.

Mine changed to that too and I was wondering if that was normal or bad news. I know that they don't even review reapplicants until January and am getting really anxious to hear something.

Ah, that makes much more sense (looking at reapps in January) considering I've been marked "Complete & under review" for ages.

Yeah. I was "complete and under review" for several months. As of yesterday that's what it was, and then today my status had been changed.

Well, your post about accepting more females is what I've noticed. The females that I know interviewed early and got acceptances early. I think USA may be doing the same since they, too, are "male-heavy".

As for OOS students: Yes, the OOS rate is crazy high! I'm surprised any OOS students apply! The cost is more than many privates. It's amazing to think that they might be able to accept 90 OOS students with the hope of getting 25.

Are the current WL students mostly all OOS? Or are some of you instate?

I'm getting nervous since I was interviewed in early October and haven't heard anything since except campus choice. :/

The below is from Wikipedia, so don't know how accurate it is...

For the fall of 2010, the average MCAT was 30.6 and the median undergraduate GPA was a 3.76.

Of this same year 2,410 applied, 371 were interviewed, 265 were accepted, and 176 matriculated.

There's still a lot of time left. I know multiple people that interviewed in September, October, or November and didn't hear anything after until they were accepted mid-March or waitlisted before accepted. It's hard but just try to relax and enjoy the time you have now.

Just received the acceptance letter yesterday in the mail! 🙂 Good luck to everyone!

When were you accepted? I was 11/16 and haven't received mine yet.

Also on 11/16...Did you get the Certiphi Screening email? I got that and submitted last week and all came back clear...afterwards, i released it and received my acceptance letter. Perhaps, yours will come tomorrow or by the end of the week.

Great point. I hadn't thought about that (released mine today). Should come soon!

Does anyone know when the next wave of acceptances should be coming out?

When was the last wave?

Is Friday a usual day? Is there a certain time of day?

I interviewed in early October and haven't heard anything except campus request. 🙁

Hello all, I am a MS-2 (only 7 more weeks of class before Step 1 study time!) and if any of you guys have questions about UASOM or Birmingham/AL send me a PM or ask on here and I will do my best to answer.

Good luck to all of you.

Received the 'Remain under consideration for an interview' update today. I completed the secondary ~9/10.

Bah, still "Secondary Complete & Under Review" here, submitted secondary 10/2 but never got a complete notice. I'm dying for an interview here. 🙁

Has anyone who received a "remain under consideration for an interview" received an interview? Stats?

I wonder when (if they haven't already) they will start ending interview invites again... This waiting game is awful!

Thanks for doing this. Quick question: does UASOM require mandatory laptops to use in class or do we use our own preference? If we can use whatever we want, do you recommend a laptop or something like an Ipad??

I actually called a few weeks ago and they said reapp interviews would begin no earlier than mid-February, probably early March...what confuses me is that interviews END March 7th! That leaves 3 interview days TOPS...

Is that for all reapps? Or is it just for IS reapps? I'm an OOS reapplicant...

I think all reapps. I am IS but I didn't tell them anything about that when I asked and they didn't ask. So I assume it's all of us.

Recived an interview! Woo-hoo!

Congrats!

Do you mind answering?

Are you instate or OOS?

Are you a re-applicant?

Male or female?

MCAT?

GPAs?

I interviewed in October and am still hoping to be accepted.

As of now they don't require anything. I tried an iPad for the first few weeks, but it didn't do everything I wanted (like replay the lectures at double speed while I go back over my notes). I ended up buying a MacbookAir the third week of school and have had no regrets- easy to carry and great battery life. If you have a computer that works, definitely wait until a couple weeks in to see how you study. In med school it only matters what works for you. A lot of people changed how they studied as school began. It took me until a couple weeks ago to figure out what works best for me. The first 3 weeks are like a freebie course so you will have plenty of time to decide what you like buy a computer then - if you need one. This is a lot more than you wanted, but in a nutshell: don't buy a computer yet - most computers will probably get an upgrade between not and July too.

I'm an IS re-applicant (29 MCAT, 3.56 cGPA) and have already updated them with my master's GPA (4.0). I've heard that re-applicants are interviewed later in the application year....can anyone confirm?

Is it recommended to send in an updated transcript for the fall semester or just wait until they request one once you are accepted, if accepted?

Yes. Last year reapps were done together on two interview days in late feb.

Do y'all receive class rankings based on test scores? I know some schools tell the students if they're in the upper/middle/lower third, but I wasn't sure how UAB approaches this. If so, does this result in a lot of competition among the students?
