So just for anyone interested here is some info I heard today about the new ranking system.

This is based on what board members said and conversations with other applicants.
(Take it with a grain of salt)
This year 60% of your rank is academic score and 40% is a score given to you by your commitee interview.

The Academic score is 70% mcat and 30% Science GPA it was unclear if it was only science or if science gpa was just a new factor being looked at more.
The interview score is more subjective but covers areas like communication abilities, critical thinking, diversity, and "adversity"

This is a shift from the old formula.

I'm reporting what info I heard but again no one including board members seemed to be confident about how things were scored. Also I heard that sometimes it's also a matter of filling certain student demographics to balance the class and that is obviously a factor not part of a formula but more about luck.

I was told something like this as well. Cognitive score + interview score.

What was the old formula? What has more/less emphasis now? Thanks for posting this information.

The old formula was just mcat/3 plus (3.75xgpa)
Interview mcat and science gpa are more important factors recently.

Has anyone gotten any official word on the second look day? I know that someone in here posted that it is scheduled for the 27th of April, but I can't find that anywhere and haven't been notified of anything..

Along those same lines, who all is planning to attend second look?

I'll be going just to meet fellow classmates. I'm already very familiar with the school, but I'd definitely appreciate knowing a few faces before classes start.

not sure if the plane tickets from out of state is worth it. I'll see everything in August anyways right?

I was thinking the same thing. I'm excited to see all my future classmates but I'll see them soon enough and I'm not sure whether shelling out $$ for the plane ticket will be worth it.

Also, has anyone applied to the University Village for housing and has anyone heard back? I haven't heard anything since December so I'm guessing my chances of living there this fall is nonexistent 🙄 In that case, I should start looking elsewhere...

Good luck to everyone on the waitlist! And a late congrats to those accepted!

I was wondering the same thing. I haven't heard anything since acceptance outside setting up my OUHSC email. Figured we get some more paperwork or info on what's next by now. Has anyone else heard from the school about anything else?

I plan on being at 2nd look day. See who's looking for roommates and get some financial aid info.

You got something about setting up email? I haven't gotten anything since the paper acceptance letter in Dec.

I've been looking at the info on the Welcome Class of '17 website. http://www.oumedicine.com/collegeofmedicine/welcome-class-of-2017

But I just happened to stumble across that site - it wasn't in anything I got from OUCOM. It looks like it's still being updated so I'm not sure how accurate it all is, there's one reference that still says class of 2016 under the white coat ceremony info.

I plan on being at 2nd look day too, can't wait to meet everyone and get started!

I applied back in late December and I haven't had a word back, not even confirmation of receiving my app and fee. I went ahead and got on a list for another apt complex as a backup.

Thank you for that website. I was curious about everything I needed to take care of before school begins. I recently updated my vaccinations (which if you have private insurance do it now before you have the schools insurance, the out-of-pocket costs for the vaccines is ridiculous).

I am excited to meet everybody and I will be at the 2nd visit day as well.

I got an email about setting up an OUHSC account as well. My hypothesis is that current OU students received this email. I think current HSC students will use the same email since they already have an HSC account.

For those who started their HSC account, you can use your login to access old lecture recordings and the practice quizzes on the Hippocrates website. Plus, if you haven't logged into your email account, it's probably full of HSC daily news like mine is (not sure how to turn this off).

Here's a link to our schedule I randomly found if others hadn't seen it yet: http://hippocrates.ouhsc.edu/comdocs/pdf/Academic Calendar 2013-2014.pdf

Orientation classes start August 14th. Start your countdown.

Yeah I got an automated email about setting up my OUHSC email, and it said all further contact will be through your OUHSC email, but don't worry...there's been absolutely nothing in there so far.

Other than these random links we're finding on our own it seems we're all in the dark together.

I'm not sure about the current OU students thing...I got an email to setup my OUHSC email at my personal email and I don't go to OU.

But thanks for the heads up about the Hippocrates stuff, hadn't tried my login info on their yet. And yeah, the spam filter emails and the daily OUHSC emails are insanely annoying. We're setting up our emails in February to get spam alerts for 6 months?

I recently updated my vaccinations (which if you have private insurance do it now before you have the schools insurance, the out-of-pocket costs for the vaccines is ridiculous).

So very true. I had titers done as well since I have good insurance through work for the time being. I'm under the impression that shot records don't cut it once you get to clinicals - you have to have positive immunological results. I not quite sure if titers are required while at OU, but I know one of my friends for sure had to have them for her away rotations.

I think current HSC students will use the same email since they already have an HSC account.

Ironically the HSC account I already had stopped working a last week. I finished up a project I was doing in one of the clinics as a temp, I guess HR just closed out my account when my employment ended. I didn't really think anything of it, figured it would reactivate at some point for school... but maybe it shouldn't have been shut off??

For safety and distance, Edmond would be your best bet. $900 might be slightly hard to find, but I'm not sure. I live in a 1 bd apartment for ~$700, but it's a pretty nice one. Edmond has even been called the number one suburb in the US by CNBC. http://www.edmondsun.com/local/x1095933263/Edmond-tops-CNBC-Best-Suburbs-listhttp://www.edmondsun.com/local/x1095933263/Edmond-tops-CNBC-Best-Suburbs-list For better price, you might want to look at Moore. I hear that it's pretty nice too, but I'm almost never there. I just go there for the huge IMAX they have at the Warren.

20 minutes is a bit of an exaggeration from Edmond, to be honest. It is extremely rare for the trip to take longer than that. I drive to the health sciences center every day (I work in a lab there). But I go to undergrad in Edmond, and live on 15th street. In the worst imaginable traffic (which hits right at the intersection of I-44 and 77), the drive is 25ish minutes at the longest. In my everyday commute, however, with slight traffic, I make it in exactly 17 minutes every day. To me, that sounded about like the 20ish minute trip that you originally asked about. As I said, though, I can't really vouch for Moore as I don't make that trip often.

First of all, sorry for the ridiculous delay. Family issues and school have kept me away from being able to write a somewhat-detailed reply.

Since most of what I was going to say has been discussed, let me elaborate. First, Oklahoma City is weird. Since you're from Broken Arrow, I'm sure you recognize the polarity in Tulsa: South is good, Midtown is nice, and North Tulsa is not a desirable place to raise a family. This isn't the case with OKC. Whereas one neighborhood might be really nice, the one a few streets over isn't, etc. This is where price plays a role. More expensive = exponentially better location/housing.

Note: I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from renting/buying a house in the city. Several of my classmates have them and love them, and have never had any problems. It's easy to pick what's good and what's not. However, if you do choose to live in the city, drive around before you buy. This should be a given, but you never know. And as always, try to avoid anything south of I-40 and/or east of I-235.

So, back to the original question. If you're looking for a less expensive 2BR in Oklahoma City but still want a safe environment for your kids, it might be hard to find something in OKC (as other posters have already stated). Then what are your options? Edmond and Moore have decently-priced homes, but the commute is >20 minutes. Not much greater (maybe five minutes or so), but hey, you said 20. I've never driven rush-hour from Edmond, but I have from Moore, and it's not the worst, but not the best either. In any event, I'm sure you could find an alternate route instead of taking the highway, if you choose.

There's also Midwest City, which is a considerably faster drive to school. Several low-price options there just because it's the home of Tinker AFB. Good environment for raising kids? I really can't answer that. You'd have to see for yourself. However, I also know a few people who have houses there and love the non-commute.

Once again, sorry about the delayed response. If you have any questions, be sure to ask here or message me, and I'll answer them ASAP.

If you're talking about the proofpoint end user digest thing, you can change the settings to where it doesn't email you. You just have to click on the link in the email and it's a pretty easy deactivation.

Honestly, they don't send anything important to your email until the summer. Any emails you get now should go to the email address you provided on AMCAS. It may be easier for them to set up accounts in February, but they get little use until school is close to starting.

Does anybody know if we need to have our transcripts sent to the school if the transcripts that were attached to our AMCAS application were already our final ones? I thought I saw or read something about the school needing a copy of our final transcript this summer before enrollment, but I do not see anything about it now.

You do need to send them your transcript, preferably before orientation. Most schools have you include your final semester grades, especially if you're taking any class that could count as a prereq. I waited until final grades are released in the summer and sent it to them then--pretty sure this is common practice.

Ha, my final grades where submitted 3 years ago. I haven't been in a classroom in so long, I am very ready to start my education again.

Thanks for the help, I'll probably have those sent over this week then.

Haha, perfect. Seriously, cherish it while you can. We had an exam this afternoon, and one tomorrow. The amount of material on it is about to make my head explode.

Me too! Glad I'm not the only one. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I had classes to distract me or an unlimited amount of cash so I could just quit my job early and vacation until August. But, I just sit at work all day hoping for a new email from Dotty or a form to fill out... anything.

I have some online training/paperwork to do, if you wouldn't mind?

So any movement on the waitlist yet? I just figured out that I have 60% chance of being in the top half of the waitlist based on 4 assumptions about how it's ordered. Meaning flipping a coin is roughly as accurate as my guessing. YES! Tails.

Anyone been moved off the wait list yet? I know the big moves won't happen until May 15 but I was just curious if anyone had heard anything recently.

I emailed Dotty today and she said 12 have been taken off the list so far.

That's awesome! Last year this time it was only 7 and it didn't get to 12 until April 25th. Maybe 60/60 coming off this year? Or just getting more movement earlier. I wish I was one of em. Good luck everyone.

MikeDMD, I just finished watching the avatar cartoon series on netflix! nice pic!

Water tribe. Haha. It's so funny. I thought it looked awful but Netflix proved me wrong.

Also, Class of 2012's match list is still on Hippocrates.

I never know what to take away from match info as an incoming medical student. Just get an idea of where OU students usually go, or what specialties the students usually pursue? Or is there something more telling about OUCOM that I'm supposed to be taking away from it?

I feel like I'm too far away for that info to be useful.

I think it depends on who you ask, to be honest. Some people will say it's better to match at outside institutions/non-community hospitals. However, some students who are married and have families prefer to do the community route, instead of pursuing big-name residencies in large cities. There's really no way to really see who matched their first choice residency location, so there's a lack of information there, I guess.

I will say that match lists give you a good idea on the competitive nature of the students as a whole. We matched a ton of people into competitive specialties, some of them more than Top 25 schools. While the numbers probably also vary based on student preference (just because you're #1 in your class doesn't necessarily mean you want to do ortho or derm), it shows that our students are competitive enough to get the specialties they want.

Really, though, it depends on a lot of other factors that aren't listed, like the strength of your class as a whole and how you fit into that mix. But it's good to know that you won't be limited to strictly primary care (unless that's what you want to do) unlike some places.

Since I am avoiding studying and pretty bored I figured I would pay it forward since I got some good info here in the past. If anyone has specific questions about the school or med school in general feel free to PM about anything.

Does anyone have any idea (have we been told?) about when we might hear about financial aid awards? I know that the scholarship app was due last week, but is there a chance to hear before May 15th?

I dropped off my direct deposit form about 3 weeks ago and the lady in the bursar's office asked me if I'd done my FAFSA because she heard they were going to start processing fin aid in a few weeks. Haven't gotten anything yet, but anytime now I would guess... Not sure.

When do you apply for loans? I have never applied for any student loans so I am not aware of the process. I have already done the FAFSA but don't know where to go from there. Thanks!

From http://www.oumedicine.com/collegeofmedicine/information-about-/college-catalog/financial-aid-scholarships

"The Office of Financial Aid expects to begin making award/denial announcements beginning May 1 for those students who submit complete applications prior to March 1. The results of financial aid applications will not be finalized until a student has been admitted officially to the College of Medicine. Prospective students are encouraged to begin the application process as soon as possible after January 1 even before the student's admission status is determined."

There should be a financial aid presentation on Second Visit Day, iirc. If you need additional loan funds or you're denied an OU loan, there are other options as well, but I don't know the entire process well enough, and I don't want to give you bad info. If you have any questions after Second Look, I'd suggest calling the FA office and sorting things out from there--they're really helpful!

Hey Everyone,
If you have already finished your Vaccination History Form with all the needed proofs you can go ahead and turn it in to student health at the Family Medicine Center, even though we do not have our Student ID's yet. I asked Judy Davis at Student Health about it yesterday and she told me that it is a good idea to get them in early; they apparently might put holds on our enrollment if we do not get them in. It is only $20 to get a titer test if you are unable to find your records.

I just got a financial aid award letter in the mail today from OUHSC Financial Aid department but I still haven't been accepted I don't think. What do you all think that's about? Just more automatic paper work and I shouldn't assume anything or oops I got accepted but no ones told me yet? Did anyone else get one of these? Wait list life is no fun. 🙁

I think they just processed most of the completed FAFSA's, because I received an email this Tuesday about Financial Aid Award Notice. Hopefully you here something soon about acceptance though, they have to be sending out their final decisions soon. Best of Luck!

Does anybody know if we will have an opportunity to try on white coats at the 2nd visit day? I wear a 42 in lab coats, but I'm 6'4" and not sure if the regular or long length would fit best.

Thanks

I called and Dottie said anyone on the waitlist who applied should be receiving them.
