No mandatory drug tests, but I'd assume they have the right to test you if they want. I'd tell your friend/"friend" to refrain from illegal activities, though. I don't know how they handle drug charges, but better safe than sorry. That whole "professionalism" thing will get drilled into your heads throughout your first semester 😛

Holy Crap...accepted off the waitlist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I already gave up and thought this day would never come!!!!

Thinking about renting the darragh street apartment for my first year. Is it hard to get? Should I contact the housing department now?

Yes, they are competitive, although I believe most people who really wanted to live there and were diligent about calling the housing office were able to get housing for first year. If you're on Facebook, I'd suggest joining the Second Look group (and Class of 2017 group) where more current students can give you advice. You can call the housing office and see where they stand right now, but I know a couple people who are living in Darragh who basically called every single week until there was an opening and they snagged it. I don't live there, so that's all I know about the process.

Have you joined our Facebook groups for Second Look and the Class of 2017? There's been some pretty extensive discussion on those apartments. There are few (if any) openings right now, but more spots are expected to open up by the end of May. They are apparently pretty expensive for what they are (in terms of sq. ft.), but at least utilities are included. Good luck!

Since April 20 is coming up, I'm just curious: when do we start getting tested for...substances? I'm asking on behalf of a friend...:luck:

Why is April 20th of significance? Is there some kind of deadline I'm not aware of?

Congratulations! It must be an amazing feeling.

Are there any shows I should watch to prepare me for doctorhood? Which provide the most realistic depictions? I'm open to any suggestions for shows to watch during the summer! 😛

  • House
  • Grey's Anatomy
  • Nip/Tuck
  • Dr. 90210
  • E.R.
  • Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman
  • CSI
  • Law and Order: Special Victims Unit

I've always heard Scrubs is the closest to reality.

House will get you ready for PBL, shouting out any possible diagnosis that might remotely fit the patient's symptoms. But none of those really offer realistic depictions. I watched Grey's when it started, it's just another medically-related soap opera. The first 2-3 seasons are good, then it started getting dumb. I know for at least the first few seasons, the writers/directors would consult with doctors to make sure that the procedures and medical jargon were accurate. I think they got rid of that quality control because the actors keep wearing their stethoscopes backwards and there's almost no medicine anymore, it's just a soap opera with people in blue scrubs. 😛

My suggestion for the summer is Game of Thrones, or, you know, Doctor Who 😎 haha

Haha, well I'm all caught up on my Game of Thrones, which I guess is helpful if I ever have to reattach a head...and my roommates are completely obsessed with Dr. Who, which I've never seen. I'm planning on watching TV and doing yoga, among a few other things, this summer. I'll definitely hop back on True Blood when it comes out again in June. The only Grey's Anatomy that I really watched was an episode that was "the musical episode." It was absolutely WACK.

True Blood is good too 👍 And the musical episode was the worst decision EVER...hopefully whoever came up with that/wrote it was banned from coming up with ideas

<vapid> I'm just glad I got into med school so I can watch Grey's Anatomy again without experiencing school-related anxiety. I had, like, a half season to catch up on! </vapid>

Are there any Asian groceries nearby?

Yes - Lotus Foods in the Strip District is the big one, although there may be more, and it's very easy to get to the Strip by bus. I think there's a Korean store on Fifth Ave but it looks small and I've never been.

The Korean one in Oakland that Ismet's talking about is Seoul Mart. While small, it has a good selection of (mostly Korean) foods. It is relatively pricey; however, the cost doesn't stop me from being a frequent visitor and I'm a pretty cheap person 🙄.

This is just my opinion, but if you are in Pittsburgh you might have to search a little harder for ethnic food ingredients and pay a little more when you do find them. Then again, it's probably pocket change compared to what you'd be saving on rent 😉... To echo what a lot of Pittsburghers have been saying on this thread, I pay less than 400/mo to live in Squirrel Hill with 4 other roomies (I have my own bedroom).

There's another Asian grocery on the Strip somewhere b/t 20-23rd St, I think. It has less selection than Lotus, but last time I was there, they had the big fresh flat rice noodles which I haven't been able to find at Lotus in months.

Would any Asian grocery have Mochiko flour? I'm gonna make mochi.

Oh nice, an asian market! Guess i know where ill be stocking up on my ramen...

Can any current student comment on how the grant/need-based $ will be distributed? My family income is extremely low but I'm not a PA resident...not sure if it affects my chance of getting any grant. Thanks!

How many students have a job while a M1, like (possibly paid) research or school related job? Is it hard/competitive to get a position? Or do most students just live off their loan money and free food at events?

Finally, what do people think about having a job the summer before M1? I want to relax, read, and plant roots. However, the financial aid forms are asking me questions like what I plan to do/how much I expect to make this summer and as a M1 so it made me think maybe we are expected to work (although that was not my impression from other threads and talking to people at interviews).

Thanks for your replies!

I do not know of anyone with a particularly regular job aside from teaching a couple of yoga classes. People work before MS1 if they already have a job (it's painful to turn down a professional salary), but this isn't expected/required. You really don't have a lot of recurring free time to be holding down a regular job during the year and it wouldn't be recommended especially while you're adjusting to med school. If you choose to take the maximum amount of loan money for COL, you will be living quite well.

The only person in my class who works (that I know of) has a PhD in bioengineering and worked here well before matriculating. I don't know her work/school balance, though. Loan money is more than enough to cover tuition and living expenses...the free food is always nice but it's not necessary (and really, you get sick of seeing the same pizza over and over after like October).

You are not expected to work over the summer, so whatever you were planning to do, do it. This is either the last or 2nd to last free FULL summer of your life, so use it wisely!

Are there Sunday night GOT socials? Because there will be next year if I have anything to say about it.

We have HBO! I like cookies! Pick me! Pick me!!

made the decision today that i will be attending pitt. hope to be seeing you all in the fall!

I had a vivid Game of Thrones-themed dream last night. It was among the most frightening dreams I have ever had. An old man's throat was slit and a beautiful woman was pushed down a dark pit. Why? WHY??

Reporting in from Boston, I and everyone I know are okay, just terrified. This just reminds me why I want to be a doctor.

Yes, definitely good to know that you're well Amphoterism!

EMS/ER medicine definitely is thrilling, rewarding, and can be very meaningful. 😀

This might be too early to spread the word, but the Emergency Medicine Student Association EMSA hosts a few suturing, IV/phlebotomy, ultrasound, airway workshops every year...totally awesome and a great way to get your hands dirty early! Lots of fun.

PittMed EM is AWESOME. Juss sayin. 😎
