Thank you for sharing. I will sit down with school admission to review my apps if did not get accepted. I was on bed for 2 days b/c of Flu and no pre-match on 11/15.

oh so you did have interviews! there doesn't have to be anything wrong with your app then! most of my friends got in during match and then off the wait list to their top choice later, it is still very early in the process. I know you are grinding your teeth but sit tight!

question for those acquainted with both UTH and UTMB...what are your feelings regarding the block schedule? that seems to be what is really holding me up in my decision...i really like houston but the block testing scares me..Galveston on the other hand just seemed so chill but i don't know if that was just the interview sales pitch lol

utmb has some of the best board scores in the state. So their schedule must be really good for learning

I have very happy friends at both schools. the ones at UTMB love the laid back atmosphere and half days. but they do have tests throughout and have that feeling of an upcoming test hovering at all times. The ones at UTH love their blocks because they feel that gives them more freedom in the few weeks before test cramming starts. overall I wouldnt be able to judge which one is better without actually trying it out. I feel that both programs have to cover and teach their students the same thing so it ends up as personal preference. if you like consistency go to UTMB, if you like test weeks and "off" weeks then UTH would be for you. Why don't you also consider the patient population (different opportunities to treat inmates etc) and clinical attributes (clinics in galveston/rural areas) versus being in the medical center...

I never see my friends from UTH. The block scheduling tends to permit 1 or 2 weekends of fun for every 4 weeks of studytime. But that could be just my friends.

I go to UT Houston and I love our schedule. I really would not want to have tests pretty much every week, because then you end up cramming for that one test and falling behind in everything else. We do VERY well on the boards, so I think that our curriculum prepares us extremely well. Honestly you are going get used to and succeed in whatever curriculum you end up in, because that will be the only curriculum you know! I would try and choose based on where you think would be a good fit (people/location), and then you will be happy! UTH and UTMB both tend to be very laid back though, and I'm sure you would be happy at either

Honestly thats part of medical school. Your not in undergrad anymore and your life will be a little different. But that being said, if you went out alot before medical school, you will probably still be going out. Whatever is important to you, you will make time for

Does anyone know if listing non-TMDSAS schools that you're applying to on the TMDSAS application hurts your chances of getting accepted?

Nah, I listed my non TMDSAS schools, and did just fine in the pre-match day. I think med schools understand that you have to apply broadly, and they can't reject you just because of that.

Depends on how well you can handle having tests back to back.
I'm at UTMB, and trust me.. it's not just a sales pitch. A lot of my classmates study 'two weeks off, two weeks on', only really hardcore studying during the last two weeks prior to an exam. We have one exam every four weeks, and it's very manageable. That combined with half days.. it's very easy going.
As someone else has said, it's the difference between lower intensity exam week + more frequent exams vs. higher intensity + less frequent exams.
Both schools will prepare you well. 🙂

On interview day how far is the parking from the school? I dont remember the exact place they told us to park, but i know the tmc is huge so if the place
They told us to park is far from the school, it might be better if i have my parents drop me off since i am from houston.

It's across the street from the school.

Accepted 8:00am this morning plus scholarship offer!!! interviewing at SW december, but I am pretty sure I will go here!!!! amazing, never been so happy in my life. this is my second year applying and I prematched to ALL the schools I interviewed at this morning... guess it was worth the wait! 😀😀😀😀🙂😀😍😀
I applied to 10 schools late September. Only one interview. UTSW. Did not prematch. Looks like I have to apply next year again. Can you share what you did the first time and what was different the second time?

has anyone recieved anything in the mail who prematched on nov 15th?

You need to get that app out quicker. Late september puts you at a huge disadvantage with Texas schools. A lot of people are done interviewing by then.

what I changed was I had only applied to 3 schools in the area, this year I applied to all the Texas schools and out of state. They told me that was the only reason why I got 0 interviews last year. Made me look arrogant to think I could just decide where I wanted to be.
I did apply very early both times so I swear that is one of the keys. since you got SW but no others you may have other things on your app that you may want to change. I am assuming here that you have amazing stats, but other Texas schools are known to like that touchy feely aspect a lot so if you reach the threshold in terms of numbers, they will start looking more closely at the rest of your app. If you think you have to apply again I strongly recommend to keep doing "things" (research, volunteering, teaching, school, etc.) because I met a few people who did literally nothing that year when they were waiting, and the following year did not even get one interview because their application got worse (literally sitting around looks bad). Hopefully it will work out for you this time around. Make sure to take thank-notes to your interview and write them right on interview day and pour your heart in there because this interview is very important for you, and then turn those in that day while you are there.
🙂🙂🙂
good luck!

I have had a different experience (plus, I am jealous of the Houston love!). Despite being settled here for many years (spouse's job and kids in school), I have gotten no local interviews. I know my app isn't horrible as other schools are interviewing me.
As far as UT is concerned, however, I have no interviews except at UTSW (with what I assume is a pretty low chance of acceptance). Mine is definitely not a stats thing, as my stats are far from amazing; I am considerably stronger in leadership and volunteering (esp non-medical). I was hoping being tied to Houston would interest local schools enough to get an interview, considering I would be highly likely to attend if selected. No such luck.
I did apply very broadly in the hopes of not doing this again! (See MDapps, which needs some updating, but I can't log in.) My kids and spouse are willing to move if necessary, as this has been in the works for a while.

Please do not think I am complaining with the above info! I have had a good cycle and will be quite happy with the results if this is it. I just wanted to point out that the whole admissions game is beyond our comprehension. 😉

That is very true, there are always factors beyond our control. What would really help if you are in the area is getting to know the people in admissions. So many people want to come here just because it is Houston and they always tell me they have too many amazing people to chose from so the application may be good enough to get in, but getting noticed is just luck sometimes. I really hope you will get to go where you and your family can stay here. My son is in school here and my husband literally could not have moved with me right now so I feel very blessed right now!

Don't give up hope craftyconq. UT-H interviews until Jan so there is still time for you to get an interview and if you got an interview from UTSW, you must be doing something right. Good Luck!

I am excited to interview at this school in the coming weeks, but at the same time I am very nervous. I interviewed at 3 texas schools before the end of October and no prematches 🙁

This is making me think that I suck at interviewing. Do most interviewers at UT-H read an applicant's application thoroughly before the interview? None of the interviewers at the three texas schools that I have interviewed at, read my application before the interview. As a result, it was very difficult answering open ended questions like "Tell me about your research and clinical experiences". I had so many and I just went ahead and listed them. I didn't know if the interviewer wanted me to provide specific stories about my research/clinical experiences because it was such an open ended question.

I also got nailed with some anatomy/ethic questions at 1 of the schools I interviewed at.

Not having a single prematch is putting a lot of stress on the interview I have coming up at UT-H on 12/7/12. This is my dream school, so the pressure is that much more. lol. 😀

If I someone match into this school, I would be thrilled.

Praying for the best, but preparing for a reapplication this coming summer.

Thanks for the info. That would be unfortunate to go alone, so I'm glad it worked out for you! If we move, my husband will likely not be employed, as he is in a Houston-specific industry. That's not horrible in our situation (albeit stressful to live off loans!) because our kids aren't old enough to stay home themselves; his unemployment would mean we don't have to pay for before/after school and summer care for them. More time to keep them close to us too. 🙂

Thank you!

I know it is stressful and this probably won't make you feel better, but honestly, I think most TX applicants get in through match in Feb. There are only a few schools that heavily pre-match, and a lot of those spots will still be lost to other schools. (Have you noticed on the boards that a large portion of those who pre-matched did so at multiple schools?) I would be highly surprised if with 4 interviews, you don't match somewhere!

You've got this one! :luck:

Thanks, but 2/3 of the schools I interviewed at are known to fill most of their class through pre-match. UTMB and A&M. The third, El Paso, does not prematch heavily. UT-H does not rely on the pre-match much either, so those that have gotten accepted by pre-match to UT-H must be applicants who perform on another level. I guess Feb 1st is what I have to wait for.

I have not recieved an interview from UTH yet, but I have some useful information. I interviewed at UTHSCSA SOM recently and the dean, Dr. Jones chatted with my small group for a bit. He said that he knows that UTH SOM has only offered prematches to 10 students and that UTH relies heavily on the match, so don't fret if you weren't prematched. It's very unlikley that you would have been.

In addition to what bollywood said, don't forget there will be tons of movement after match. Again, a lot of pre-match holders have multiple schools. Those will be automatically dropped at match, opening up more spaces for other applicants. Also, just this past year, a friend matched to her second choice but got in at UTH off the waitlist in May.

The odds are in your favor, so chin up! :luck:

I can name about 10 people who prematched here, so I really don't believe it's that low of a number; however, like everyone has said, they don't hand out many offers this early, so there is PLENTY of time left 🙂

I've heard number more around 40-50... Which is still much less than other schools prematch!

Anyone know if there are interviews left?

I just got an interview invite this past Thursday 11/29 for Dec 14th. Unfortunately I have an interview at UCincinnati on that day and I've heard they are not eager to reschedule. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone will drop their interview for this coming Friday.

(elbow nudges to anyone who is considering dropping their 12/7 interview!!!)

That's good news they are still filling December slots. I hope you're able to reschedule and good luck at Cinci!

I'd love your spot. 😉

UCinci is actually very nice about rescheduling. They just don't have many dates (only interview twice a month).

I was accepted Dec. 5th and interviewed Nov. 9th. Has anyone who was accepted Dec. 5th received a scholarship offer yet?

Are IS kids automatically reviewed for scholarships or is there a separate form we should send in to be considered for scholarships?

Welp... Here I was thinking those acceptances hadn't gone out yet. :/

I called admissions and Amanda said it is a rolling process until Dec 31st that is in-sync (but not necessarily same day) with the weekly committee meetings on Tuesdays. So, you can expect at least a few to go out periodically as either declinations come in or the committee approves another pre-match based on the most recent interviews. There is no real rankings until just before match she said.

I would assume a few will be going out here and there until the end of Dec.

I'm sure you're automatically considered for some scholarships, but there is also a separate form for a different scholarship.

Anyone know when that scholarship form is due? I looked on the Accepted Student site and it has a form but it looks like its from last year...

Interviewed here Dec 7th. Definitely my top pick after the visit. Feb can't come soon enough!

They usually update in around March in year of entry I believe.
