Hey guys! I am a first-year med student here at the U and am a member of the Interview Tour Committee. I'm sure I took a handful of you on your tour during your interview day. I just wanted to comment on a few things regarding this crazy time that is the end of March/beginning of April for UUSOM applicants. First, in meeting with Dr. Chan last week concerning how to best go about offering acceptances, we agreed that it would be awesome for the admissions committee to make a personal phone call to extend a seat-offer. From a few of the previous posts, it sounds like they are making that happen! Secondly, the UUSOM typically accepts 20-25 people before their mass-acceptance during the end of March. As has been stated, this is not an "early acceptance program." You will likely never even know who in your class was accepted "early" or who was even accepted off of the wait list. This time last year was terrible for me as I waited in anticipation, just as many of you are doing. Please just know that we ALL feel for you and that the end is in sight! Dr. Chan and the new admissions committee are absolutely fantastic and the Medical School is headed in an extremely positive direction right now. I love the U and am crossing my fingers for all of you!

May the odds be ever in your favor 😉

Thanks you for your post, that is encouraging. But I still don't know if I will survive this wait! I feel a panic attack coming on every second. Good luck to everyone.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I have heard third-hand news that the mass acceptance/wait list/denial notifications are supposed to occur Friday March 22.

If they are calling everyone who is accepted, that might suggest that the (rumored) mass mailings on Friday would be for the wait list or rejections.

Thank you so much! This is great to know. Right now I feel like the more information I have, the better.

Thanks alot, definitely appreciate the heads up

Congrats!! Did you status change yet? Also, do you know if you are still part of the "early acceptances" or if they have started all notifications? When did you interview, and are you in-state? Congrats again!

Thanks everyone! When I got the phone call I thought it was my dentist's office confirming my appointment. Basically, I was shocked. No status change yet and Dr. Chan didn't indicate if I was part of the "early acceptance"/pre-mass acceptance group. He did give me feedback from my interviewers (ie specifics of what they took from the interview) as well as comments on other strengths in my application (ie personal statement, ec's, etc.) It was actually really nice to know that multiple people actually laid eyes on all of the work we put into completing the U's intense application!

I interviewed during the end of October and am in-state.

Hey Cinta, could you call him back and give him my number? That would be great, thanks!

Can i have yo' numba? can i, can i haaave it?

I agree...I don't believe in this personal phone call bull honky. The U of U has and will always send rejection letters via snail mail. The waiting is all about building up anticipation...false anticipation. You will have better luck getting into medical school if you look outside of Utah.

Why do you feel a phone call is any worse than a letter in the mail? A phone call its much more personal.

I think phone calls are very nice for those who get accepted. I'm sure they will still send waitlist and rejections in snail mail.

I called the admissions office yesterday to ask how we would be notified. I was told that originally they were planning on doing snail mail for acceptances and email for wait list/rejections, but recently decided to extend acceptances via phone call. She said there will be a handful of acceptance calls made in the next week or so, but the majority of phone calls (as well as rejection emails) would go out at the end of March.

Thanks for letting us know! I was thinking that if I didn't get a phone call in the next day or two, then I would be out of luck. This takes a little pressure off at the moment, but I still wish we had a definite date. That being said, I would still LOVE a phone call in the next day or two.

Congrats, that's amazing. I can't imagine what a relief that would be! Mind posting stats and any other info?

That's Awesome congrats! What a huge relief it must be. Are you IS or OOS? Is this your first year applying?

Truly! That would really make my year.

It would probably make my year times 4 or 5😀 I think this is more stressful than residency match would be but I obviously have a limited perspective. At least once you're in you know that you are going to become a doctor.

Hey I'm just a little ignorant towards this whole process but if they are calling a few people a day and this is not te early acceptance does that mean they are still meeting about applicants every day? Or does this mean our fates are already decided and they're just slowly accepting people because there is so much work in responding to all the applicants

I'm really hoping to get into the U. I have officially been waitlisted at every other school I have interviewed with! Come on Utah!

I have my sources, but believe as you will. There are closer to 30 acceptances (not quite 35). And of those there are out of state-ers. Don't know how many, but 5+? would be my guess. But that may not include any phone calls made today... so perhaps 35 is a good estimate? ... Just for all those calculating.

I'm IS, first time applicant. My gpa and MCAT were below average but I was above average in the other 6 categories the U looks at.
I didn't have much faith in myself due to my below avg. gpa/MCAT, so I am ecstatic with the great news. I am glad that the committee can see past the gpa and/or MCAT score and appreciate other strengths when deciding who would make a great Dr. or not.
Anyways... I wish you all the best of luck and I hopefully it comes sooner rather than later 'cause waiting is the hardest part!

Man, congrats on being accepted! I'm the same way, only I haven't heard back yet. I'm getting really nervous. I was at least double the average hours in the categories for the U. Maybe there's still hope.

I imagine that these calls are made around the same time every day (or every other day depending on Dr. Chan's schedule). I would love to know what time of day and what days these calls are coming so that we don't need to watch our phones 24/7. If anyone receives a call or has any insider information, it would be very much appreciated if you could post your time/day of call!

Apparently most speeding tickets are classified as Class C Misdemeanors in Utah. So if you have gotten a speeding ticket in the past you might want to keep an eye out for your background check and notify your school if it shows up before they see it on certiphi (the AAMC system for performing background checks). I had to do that for all the schools I interviewed at because I did not disclose it on my AMCAS application. I'm not sure if it's that important but just thought I might give you a heads up. Don't mean to stress anybody 🙂

If your ticket is dismissed and you were never fined or anything that doesn't have to be disclosed according to amcas guidelines correct?

I got the call on Monday at 11:55 AM. I know of someone who got accepted either last week or 2 weeks ago via snail mail. So it looks like there isn't a strict system.

Okay... I am rather confused now. Will all the accepted students get a phone call personally from Dr.Chan? I mean that's a LOT of calls to make, around 102?? And those who get letter will only either be on watlist or rejected?? Can someone expound on this ???

It sounds like they were sending letters, but then had a meeting and decided to do phone calls instead. It also sounds like they will send out letters at the end of March if they don't finish with phone calls first. Of course, all of this is based on assumptions and third party information, so don't take it as absolute truth.

Hey guys, me again. Just to clarify, Cr. Chan will be extending all acceptances via phone call this year. This decision was made at our summative meeting following the med student interview tours. Dr. Chan really has all of your best interests in mind and wanted our opinions as to the best way to receive an acceptance. The first year students in attendance concurred that receiving a phone call with other personal information as to WHY we were being accepted would be the best! It really says a lot about the program here that the dean of admissions met with us first year students and actually made significant changes to the admissions process based on our input!

Also, it's really none of my business... but the idea that the admissions committee "leaves you hanging" just for kicks is unfair. I have to say, one year ago I didn't know what to think about the excruciatingly long application process that it the UUSOM; however, it is extremely evident in my class that countless hours of careful consideration went into who would make up this class. If I could say one thing to the UUSOM's benefit, it would be that the dynamic here is one of camaraderie and mutual respect. We are all very different people, but we compliment one another very well. That said, I have NO idea why my application was not thrown into the trash one year ago. The fact is that not everyone can get into the program on their first or second try.

Sorry for the soap-box, but I just want all of you to know that this school is rad. Period. Keep your phones on!!

Thanks Mussman! We appreciate your input greatly and it's nice to have some clarity and less speculation on some of the admissions aspects. I agree that it is unfair to dig the U for taking too long when it has already been apparent that they are taking steps to make this process more personal and tailored. We should stay hopeful and be grateful we have a possible med school opportunity coming down the pipeline. It is, however, still a painful wait.

I'd have to agree. Everyone at the school has been great to me, which has made me want to attend all the more. I still remember the incredibly friendly phone call I got from Goldie in the admissions office when I was invited for an interview. Now I'm just hoping for a phone call from Dr. Chan!

ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!Phone call around 2:30! Keep up the good fight everyone. I have a similar story to ZICO! So to all the underdog applicant keep up the hope!
