1) what's small pooled?
2) I completed 8/6, but no confirmation email from them. However, the online application center says they are reviewing... What's up with that?

Finished with the interview! Feels so good to have my first one down. Very impressed with university/hospital/CURRICULUM especially. Loooow stress day. They just want to have a conversation with you and put a face to your application. The students will randomly come up to you and introduce themselves and start up conversations. Everyone seems pretty stoked to be there. I'm in love with school. Please send invitation, will withdraw all other applications. 🙂

Congrats on california II, I am california as well, and I look forward to an interview with them. They are on my top list to go to, but also toughest too

The forum has search functions for threads and you can multi quote as well.

But:
1) Small pool just means you're in a small(er) group of applicants that could potentially receive an interview. Really, it doesn't mean much. This pool is generally about 1/3 of applicants.
2) I never received a complete email, but was under review for about 6 weeks before getting small pooled. There's a method to the madness, but don't over think it.

Has anyone been able to apply to UVM without a committee letter?

Sorry, should have been more specific with my question.

Has anyone been able to apply to UVM without a committee letter even though the school has a premed office?

Thanks for the reply. I didn't want to search through the 8 pages. call me lazy 🙂

Hey there. I'm a student here and never had a committee letter even though my school offered one. Go for it!

Hey Guys,

I'm a student here. UVM doesn't usually send "complete" emails. Once you have submitted your secondary application via the Online Applicant Center, you are complete, as long as you have had your letters of recommendation sent to UVM.

For everyone that is waiting, I know it is tough because I was just in your position last year, but hang in there and stay positive. Take things as they go. Write letters of interest to not only UVM, but other schools as well. You'd be surprised what schools like to hear from students.

Best of luck and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

This may be a silly question, but should letters of interest be written as emails or actual hand-written letters? Also, do you have any advice for what Vermont is looking for in such a letter. Thanks!

7/31 submit, no complete e-mail....no news 🙁 anyone else in the same spot? or have most people around my time already gotten their II's?

I was also a 7/31 submission.

Have you checked their website? I never got an email from them about being complete. It took me until 9/5 to get my status changed in my application page to small pool.

I hope you get notified soon.

I just checked my status (since dsoz found the change there), but I still have the 6-8 weeks preliminary review status. I submitted 8/3.

That is not a silly question at all. You can just send letters of interest to the regular admissions email address ([email protected]).

In the interest letter/letter of update, you can do a couple of things:

1. Update the admissions committee on any newer developments that have occurred since you've submitted your secondary.
2. Express your specific interest in coming to UVM. You cannot just say "I love UVM because it has a cool curriculum," rather, you need to do some research on their website, SDN and the internet to find out specific things about UVM that interest you. Your letter can talk about things like their simulation lab, the Vermont Integrate Curriculum, PCR, the collective/cooperative environment, how beautiful the city of Burlington is, etc.

Just an FYI, the girl sitting next to me in class told me to tell you all this:

CALL the admissions office and express your interest in coming here. She called and one hour later she got an interview invite. Last year, two days after I sent off my letter of interest, I got an interview invite.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info! How long after you were complete did you send the letter of interest?

This may just be me, but I genuinely don't understand how expressing your interest works over the phone. What are we supposed to say?

"Hello, my name is so and so, and I'm very interested in the Vermont school of medicine. (State reasons)."

"Great."

"Ok...well..I just wanted you to know.."

"Okay."

"Okay...bye."

Maybe I have it completely wrong here, but it just seems like a really awkward conversation to me..

lol i was thinking this tooo!.. i understand needing to be assertive but i feel like this could turn awkward depending on who answers the phone

that being said it's worth a shot. whenever I cringe about something like this I think about the alternative: NOT getting an interview.

Don't worry about it being awkward. The important thing is that the call/letter/whatever gets put in your file and the committee will see it. No individual in the admission office can tell you over the phone that your call WILL DEFINITELY make a difference in a decision about you. But the fact is, it does. UVM loves to accept students who WANT to be here. And I think that pretty much goes for every med school out there 😀

That's some serious love bro... now even more anxious/hopeful for an interview! just sent in my very first LOI so :xf:

Haha thanks so much for the support and extra boost of confidence. I'll definitely call/send a letter now the first opportunity I get 🙂

My application JUST got complete today, so I'm guessing I should at least wait until I get small pooled? Or should I go ahead and submit the letter/call anyway?

I wouldn't assume you're going to get small pooled. I would just send the thing to be safe.

does anyone kno when/if they start rejecting people who r in the small pool?

Sorry, I didn't mean it that way. I just felt like it would be too early for me to send an LOI if I haven't even been small pooled yet. I figured I should wait at least a couple weeks to see if I am and then go ahead and send the letter regardless if I have been small pooled or not. I thought it would be presumptuous of me to send an LOI or call this early =/

But I guess you'e right. Better to be safe than sorry..

Thank you though 🙂

Just called and spoke with a very nice person in admissions, because I submitted 8/2 and still had the "your supplemental has been received...6-8 weeks" status. She told me that I was complete and had been since early August.

She also said that my app should be reviewed soon, because people who became complete in early August (she didn't give me an exact date) haven't been reviewed yet. So good news! Fingers crossed for a dip in the small pool...

Good luck to those that are interviwing tomorrow! I'll definitely stop by some time during the day. Just a heads up, the first years had an exam today so if we look upset/angry/tired/depressed thats the reason why (we normally aren't like that only during pre and post exam-but who isn't?).

however I am KICKING myself for not taking that golden opportunity to gush about how much I want to go there. stupid stupid stupid meee

Thanks for sharing the information! Hears to hoping to hear soon!

I think if you get an interview invite at Mayo you'll get small pooled at Vermont. 🙂

I just recently found out about UV. I know it's now late (Sept) but do you think it'd be worth applying?

I hope that bit about reviewing early august completes is true. I sent a LOI about a week ago but no word. I love the outdoor club this university has!

I think there are a couple of people in my class that applied later (Oct/Nov) so I wouldn't discourage you from applying here. I'm not sure what their stats were but I would think that if you were going to apply a bit later, they would consider your application much more heavily if you had stronger stats/extra curricular.

I'm so excited for my interview! 🙂
Who else is interviewing September 18th?

I'm excited for you guys? That counts right? Haha but really good luck everyone! Maybe I'll get an ii soon and get to be in your shoes!

Odd.

I got small pooled here, and I just checked my application and it went back to the 'complete' text rather than the small pool text...

I Submitted on 8/14 and I've still got the "6-8 weeks" message. Would it make sense to call or write a letter of interest before confirming my application is complete, or should I ask about that, first? This is definitely in my top 3 schools, and I'm itching for an interview.

Uh. The message says 6-8 weeks and it hasn't even been 6 weeks yet? Calm down.

I think a phone call wouldn't hurt actually. Even it hasn't been 6-8weeks, you can call and do two things: check on the status of your application as well as express your interest for coming to UVM. The Admissions Office documents your name in you file when you call.

I only asked because mzell12 had called and found out his application had actually been complete for weeks.

Thanks! My stats aren't that hot. My MCAT is <30. So here's hoping you get a II too! 🙂

Just checked my status today and saw the small pool message. I don't know when it was updated, but I was complete 8/1 or 8/2.

Are you IS?
I also have a less than 30 MCAT but I'm really hoping UVM is as holistic as they say. I would love to go here!
Way to go on the II!

No e-mail status alert, but checked today and saw that I was small pooled....

I am OOS. So hope that's some encouragement! Hopefully, they invited me because they liked my PS and extracurriculars 😀

Status change! I'm now swimming in the pool!! 😀
