a friend of mine got his acceptance via pigeon post
pigeons? I had assumed that owls were the birds of choice these days
a friend of mine got his acceptance via pigeon post
any idea when the next round of acceptance will go out?
I believe the next committee meets near April 18thish...which means around there or after
Here's hoping it doesn't take that long for the waitlist to start moving, I'll probably have broken the refresh button on the online applicant center by then.
yeah, I'm still curious as to whether we're all on a true waitlist now, or whether they still have acceptances to offer besides seats that are vacated by withdrawals
They still have acceptances.
any idea when the april admissions committee meeting will be?
good to know, thanks! any idea whether they've made any offers recently? or what this "new notification system" might be? email is fine with, me if they want to just do it that way 😉
If I were an admissions committee (and obviously I am not), I would finish all the interviews, rank everybody who hadn't yet been rejected, and then start giving out acceptances. I know they say they don't rank people on the wait list, but I can't think of a way to handle 50-100 people on a wait list without some sort of order... (the 50-100 is conjecture btw, as is the rest of my comment)
That's what I had heard but I'm not sure where - maybe here in last year's thread? I think I had read that people seem to be taken off of the wait list at random or at the discretion of somebody in particular. I just can't figure out how that can be the case though. I think they must have some sort of order and they are waiting to move until the interviews are all done.
If they don't rank people on the wait list, then how on earth do they decide who to pull off? And if the waitlist is unranked, then does sending additional LOR's or LOI's even help?
Good luck, everyone! UVM is very hard to get into for OOS students.
Why do you say that?
i'm not sure were you got 150. the class size is around 110 or less previous years.
According to https://www.aamc.org/download/321442/data/2012factstable1.pdfClass of 150. State legislature requires 100 to be instate (can be lower depending on how many instate applicants apply-usually around 80 apply in-state). That leaves maybe ~90 spots available for OOS students. UVM gets over 6,000 OOS applications. So yeah, competitive.
According to https://www.aamc.org/download/321442/data/2012factstable1.pdf
the 2012 entering class of 112 matriculants included 34 in-state and 78 out-of-state. Probably varies a bit year-to-year.
Competitive, yes.

A few corrections:
1) The class size is 114 students per class +/- 1-2 places.
2) Each year approximately 30% of the class is made up of In-State students.
3) Ergo, ~70% of the student body at UVMCOM are from Out-Of-State.
4) In the class of 2016 we have 35 Native Vermonters and 79 Out of State Students.
5) This breaks down to 30.7% IS, 69.3% OOS.
6) These percentages vary by year. In recent years the split has been as large as 24.5% IS, 75.5% OOS.
All of this data is available on the school's website at: http://http://www.uvm.edu/medicine/admissions/?Page=classprofiles.html
More detailed info can be found in the newest version of the MSAR.
Definitely varies, and the original legislative mandate was created ~10 years ago. Vermont's youth population is shrinking. The 100 in-state requirement is reduced based on the number of in-state applicants. Even if 100 in-state students apply, not all of them can be accepted (can you imagine 50 students with under a 3.5?). Getting in is easier as an in-state applicant, but it's still no breeze.
What may be true for you as you are applying to undergrad may or may not apply equally to all graduate and professional programs.
I'm talking specifically about the medical school. The undergraduate college hasn't had a class size of smaller than 500 students since the 1800's.
Like I said, the demographics are changing rapidly in Vermont. At my high school we used to have ~1,000 students. Last year we had ~950. Next year the small freshman class will bring it down to about ~920. Additionally, many of the youths that Vermont have are leaving the state to seek work and school elsewhere. We call this here "the brain drain".
The IS:OOS ratio is quite stable.
Entering Class of:
2008
28IS
87OOS
2009
34IS
80OOS
2010
30IS
84OOS
2011
35IS
79OOS
2012
35IS
79OOS
Which is good for instate applicants. If the youth population is going down but the number going to UVM is stable, more are getting accepted. In recent years only about 80 applicants were in-state (we're such a tiny state).
That is an inappropriate interpretation of the figures. Approximately the same number of IS students are being accepted as in the past. The percentage of IS applicants who matriculate may be transiently increased in certain years, but this has no bearing on the qualifications of the individual candidates nor the absolute number of issued IS acceptances.
However, this conversation is quickly becoming irrelevant. Bottom line: For IS & OOS applicants, UVMCOM is essentially no more (or less) difficult to gain acceptance to than any other US allopathic medical school. All are highly selective.
yes. it's amusing when high school students post in pre-allo forums.
let's get back to wondering when the next acceptances will go out .. .
HS? I was trolled. Sorry folks.
Yes it's difficult for both IS and OOS to get into, but still much easier to get into for IS. Let's do the math:
35/80=.4375
=43.75% accepted
OOS
100/6000
=1.66% Accepted
In terms of being "trolled" by a high school student, how can you not see that it clearly says "hSDN" on under my profile information to the side of the post?
What are your least favorite and most favorite things about UVM? It doesn't have to be restricted to the medical college.
For me:
Pros - Faculty and people, facilities, Burlington (off-campus dining), Vermont
Cons - Weather, lack of diversity on the campus (though the medical school is probably different), tuition
I think you might be looking at matriculated/applied instead of accepted/applied, but the numbers are still pretty similar according to this. http://www.medicalschoolsinusa.com/university-of-vermont-college-of-medicine/
Hey everyone,
I interviewed and was placed on the OOS waitlist. I loved the school and would definitely go if accepted, but I am considering deferring as I am a little burned out at the moment. I would like to get my head in the right place before jumping into med school (I'm sure some of you know what I mean).
tl;dr: Does anyone know if UVM allows deferrals?
Thanks for any info!
anyone interview in february and not get a decision (site says to be reviewed by committee)? thanks
Is anybody that's in Small Pool Purgatory still holding out any hope, or are the interview invitations for the season done?

Interview invites may or may not be complete, but as far as I know, the last interview date for this year is April 11th.![]()
