I will be at Fletcher Allen on the 11th 🙂

...To interview?

During my interview, my interviewer explicitly told me there is a sort of ranking on the waitlist. He said he had been on the committee for a while (older person). He said the applicant gets a score for the application and a score for the interview. Those two are added up. He said the composite score is the largest determinate of when the applicant is taken off the waitlist.

Part of the process; but far from the whole story. Once the applicant pool is distilled down to the ~10% of folks that are invited to interview, the strength/qualifications of each individual candidate are pretty darn equivocal (read: very high). The interview itself is a major place where distinctions can be made - but, there are others as well. The full constellation of factors that influence WL selection is huge, and precludes the creation of a ranked list.

So ultimately, yes, as you would expect there is a system for initially evaluating applicants/interviewees prior to the AdCom review meeting, however, for all intents, purposes, and practical considerations the WL is not ranked.

Has anyone interviewing on the 11th heard back from the student host program? Im thinking of booking my hotel since i havent heard from anyone yet.

Does the oos waitlist usually begin to move after the last committee meeting?

Hello all
So I know this question has prob asked by a lot of people but do they take a large amount of people from out of state waitlist and when do they start making decisions about it. I am so tired of this wait now 🙁. Since I have been on the waitlist from jan I have already sent two update letters and recommendation letters. Does anyone recommend sending another update letter soon or letter of interest? I mean I know many people are in the same stage as me so any suggestions or advice is appreciated.

Unfortunately that interview date is during our [much needed] spring break, so many students are traveling out of the Burlington area. With that said, you still may hear something, though most of us are pretty preoccupied with the final exam coming up on 4/5/13 and that might be why it's taking longer than normal to check the list of applicants requesting housing. Send me a PM and I'll see if I can help (caveat: no promises).

If you do have to book a hotel, the Best Western Windjammer is close to the school and has great special rates for interviewees - I think I paid $75 in fall of 2011 (and again in spring 2012 when I was looking for an apartment), and they gave me a free $10 voucher to the onsite restaurant which has great pub food.

I just heard back this morning, I didn't get matched with anyone. 🙁 I guess everyone left for break.

I'll be flying into Burlington on the 9th from Southern California and leaving on the 12th in the late afternoon. If anyone else is interviewing on the 11th and wants to grab dinner the night before or explore the area, shoot me a PM! I've done this for all my other interviews and it's nice to get to know some fellow interviewees! Plus, it helps to see a familiar face the day of the interview.

Just got the acceptance e-mail! Interviewed late January. OOS. Did not send post-interview letter of interest/intent.

Congrats! Hopefully they'll be sending more acceptances throughout the day. . . I could really use some good news this week.

Out of curiosity I know this school waitlists basically everyone at one point or another but having interviewed back in september, just wondering if my chances are slim now lol I'm OOS and have shown interest in the school in some form or another. And congrats to those accepted 🙂

Also accepted this morning off the OOS waitlist!!! Interviewed mid-January.

Incidentally, I have not received an acceptance email, but instead found out through an email offering me a scholarship. (So am I really accepted???)

Congratulations for everyone who got in! For people who interviewed in March, they won't review your application until the 15th of April? Also, if you're OOS, are you automatically WL or can you get accepted straight? Thanks!

Congrats to all those accepted! Exciting day!

maybe they just forgot about December interviewees? 🙁

I'd send them more love letters, but they might think start to think I'm a stalker or something.

Do you think it would help if i sent them a picture of my cat in this:

I was thinking about sending them a haiku (not!):

UVM MD
My future is in your hands.
Love you. Accept me?

Congrats to all who received acceptances today....hope you all enjoy your maple pops!

...and if were me, I would absolutely send that haiku - it's brilliant.

Accepted today off the OOS waitlist! I really wasn't expecting to hear until May so this is great!

does anyone know when the next round of acceptances (or rejections) will go out? I interviewed a couple months ago and was placed on OOS waitlist i think about 3 weeks ago, have they already filled out a class's worth of acceptances?

Oh I totally understand! Thank you for informing me! I just booked a hotel room at that Best Western for $79 🙂 I can't wait to visit, and I am def excited!

Hi I was wondering who LOI should be addressed to / what email to use? Thanks!

When I sent mine, I just used the admissions email and addressed it 'Dear Admissions Member.'

Futuredr08 and I are going to be grabbing something to eat the night before the interview. If anyone else wants to join, shoot me a PM!

I'm interviewing for a volunteer position this summer. Should be fun. How nice are the Fletcher allen nurses? I'm being interviewed by one.

Sigh got my financial aid award letter today. It... does not look good.

when are the next round of acceptances supposed to come out??? i interviewed in mid-feb and i am getting more and more anxious as the summer approaches.. le sigh..

So jealous of those in-state right now! That would be a hefty chuck less in loans!

I received a decent amount in scholarships and it still doesn't look good. Is that even possible?

If you're talking about the 10k alumni scholarship yeah, it basically takes the OOS tuition from being insanely pricey to a normal priced school.

OOS here. Just saw the financial aid package UVM is offering me:
f8b.gif

I will be getting (non-UVM) scholarship munnies, so I'll be fine, but still...nada?

I'm right there with you. For the OoS'er, that's rough 🙁 :scared: 😱

Really really rough +1

Don't worry guys, we can be poor together. Imagine if you continue to live like a student for the first few years after your real salary kicks in and you can pay it off pretty quick. You just have to be willing to live like a college student in your 30s. Hopefully something is done eventually to help out the majority of our generation who will be indebted with student loans for most of our lives.

How are you guys getting financial aid notification? Email or snail mail?

At this rate I'm going to have to gun for neurosurg to pay off my debt and then it'll be living like a college student in my 40s 😎

It's email notification then UVM portal.

Yep, and an additional 10k scholarship. The problem is that the rest of the package is almost entirely made up of unsubsidized loans. Subsidized institutional loans are basically non-existing. The interest will murder me 🙁

This is why I think something has to be done eventually to help the hordes of students with all this mounting unsubsidized interest. It's not just us med students, it's everybody graduating from college who can't get jobs. But yeah, we'll be taking out the most loans, and I don't even want to think about the interest. If I have to live like a college student for 10 years I guess I can. But then how do you save to retire? It's like as soon as you pay off your debt you have to start saving to retire. I wonder what the minimum payments will be like on a resident's salary.

Does anyone know when they admissions committee is meeting next?

I hear April 15th and 18th from older posts, but does anyone know for sure?

have there been any In State acceptances yet this cycle?

Do any current medical students lurking around here know if the ADCOM is receptive to LORs/LOIs from an applicant's current employer / research PIs? I'm on the OOS waitlist and am hoping to nudge them into an acceptance.

I know that it officially doesn't make a difference, however I'm just wondering if they trash those letters or actually consider them and/or get annoyed that we keep badgering them.

I wouldn't say they trash them outright...but they carry [much, much] less weight than a letter of interest/intent written by an applicant. To the extent that I might caution you away from doing so (when you could instead be sending your own letter).

LORs from PI's/Employers (as part of your AMCAS app) are helpful in getting you the interview invite...after that, it's up to the applicant.

....So keep on writing those letters.
