I have been COMPLETE since mid-July, so today I called Admissions and inquired about my application. Apparently my application is currently being reviewed by a subcommittee, but all my status page says is COMPLETE. I had read on this thread that the "subcommittee status" is usually a bad thing, so I asked her if the adcom had reservations about my application. She then told me that all applicants are reviewed by the subcommittee before being granted an interview. This really confused me because I thought that this status meant a low priority score. Am I misinterpreting subcommittee evaluation for "subcommittee status"? Anybody have any thoughts?

As I understand it, the subcommittee status would indicate they had reservations (e.g., due to an IA, DUI, weak academics, etc.) and need to do add'l review (so they send it to a subcommittee). It sounds like you are simply being reviewed by a committee prior to being assigned a score. Just chill, bro!

Everyone, try to keep your panties well-aired and avoid wedgies because this is going to be one long train ride! Also, if you get your panties in a bunch over this, I'd hate to be your roommate in med school!

For those of you that got interviews, how close to the 8000 character count limit were you guys on the secondary application?

They don't base interview invites off of character counts.

I don't know about that. Everyone on my class wrote an essay between 6,502 and 7,206 characters. I know for a fact that they WAIT LISTED anyone with an ODD character count! 😱

They have to eliminate applicants based on SOMETHING....

I personally used just less than 5K. Unless you have something truly compelling to share, I would not come even close to the full 8K limit... Think about how many of these things the adcom reads!

I am definitely of the opinion that they're more interested in substance, rather than length. A shorter, yet powerful essay would be much better than a longer more weak essay - it might have a chance to start dragging along.

Just my humble opinion, however.

This actually happened to me too. I kept getting complete status changes so I called to ask about my app. The lady told me I was being reviewed by a subcommittee, which I interpreted to be exactly what you said (not so good). My status still says complete though, which is confusing. I'm not getting my hopes up though, since they may just be trying to be nice about a poor status. That is a little confusing though...

This exact same thing happened to me. I got two different complete statuses separated by a few weeks from VCU. When I got the second one, I thought that it may have been a mistake, so I called the admissions office. The lady there told me that "my application had gone to sub-committee". I interpreted this to mean that my status should have been the one that mentions the sub-committee, (which on SDN has determined to be a not-so-desirable status), and figured my chances at VCU were fairly limited.

Over the next week or so, I received at least two more "complete" statuses via email notification. I was wondering what in the world was going on, but decided to give it some time. A few days later, I received and interview invite (today).

My best guess is that everyone goes to an interview sub-committee before they're actually offered an interview spot. This must be why the admissions office told myself, and you YPDCC, that our apps were at sub-committee.

They probably have a whole different meeting or committee for the folks that they give the actual "sub-committee" status update. Maybe for those who received a lower-priority score upon the initial review.

Just a guess, but it makes sense to me? Who knows though..

Regardless, good luck!!! :luck::xf:

Edit: Oh, I forgot, also amongst that second bunch of "complete" statuses, I eventually received the "may" status. Then a few days later the ii came.

To the few people who have PM'ed me about it all. It's been a month and two weeks and the incomplete train keeps on keepin' on.......for unknown reasons - mine and theirs.

Third email was sent to them this morning - hopefully have this figured out soon!

complete since 7/30.. 3.73/35.. IS/from Richmond.. zero status updates

no love 🙁

Well here's the thing. I have to schedule my interviews around rotations. Let's say I have two in a month. My rotation is 20 days. Making up 16 hours across that is not an easy feat at all, I ****ing died doing 7:30 - 7:30 in the ER on Monday and Tuesday. That was just the ER. I'm going to be in the SICU in November and industrial in December.

But I get your point. It's early....

Yikes!!! hugs... I feel guilty... I'm "on vacation" at my grandmom's for a few weeks and haven't had anything to do all day except work on secondaries and look around on SDN ... hang in there!!!

I'm hoping for some oos further status loving! I've had that status for so long now.

Sent via mobile
had further status earlier in the week and interview invite yesterday! oos 3.7/3.7/31

It's too early in the game calm down. What's your ECs looking like? VCU is big on extracurricular activities and that usually breaks or makes an application more than stats. VCU sees numbers all the time but they want to see uniqueness and dedication in your application. Either way just relax and be patient. Good luck! 👍

This. When I spoke to the Dean of Admissions about a friend who will be applying with a great GPA and awesome ECs (repeated legitimately one of a kind achievements on an international scale) but a potentially low MCAT (awaiting score), she said this non-URM individual would be given strong consideration for an interview with an MCAT as low as a 24 (pretty much MCV's floor for the MCAT). They care about your ECs. Stats are only marginally meaningful to them from what I can gather. As long as they think they can get you through the medical curriculum, they'll find a way to do it and let you in if they otherwise like you enough.

That is true. Unique clinical experiences 🙂

Interview invite. Wooooooo! My top choice since I'm from Richmond. 3.75/32.

Anyone know around what date they're on in reviewing applications? I was complete 7/29 and no status change since.

Just stick in there man you'll be fine. They give pretty big preference to stuff like that and LORs. The school is amazing man if you give them anything for them to believe in you, I promise they will give you a chance. I've interviewed at a lot of schools and they all talk about holistic reviews but in all honesty VCU is probably the only one out of them that really does.

Someone a few pages back posted that VCU gives out 1800 secondaries and 800 interviews.. where is this information from because their website says they have about 7000 applicants? I'm just curious because that seems like a pretty narrow primary to secondary screen..and I have an incredibly low GPA so me thinks it's not the case since I received a secondary...

I actually came across some admissions stats from a couple of years ago that indicated ~6500 applicants and 2000 secondaries, so this may very well be true. That all said, if you got a secondary, that's great. I will say that if your GPA is "incredibly low" (<<3.0?), I wouldn't count on MCV or any other MD program giving you serious consideration unless you just won a gold at the London Olympics and simultaneously managed to pull of a 40 on your MCAT. In that case, you should be shoe-in!

My school uses veCollect for letters of recommendation, how long did it take VCU to match your letters with your submitted secondary application?

It has been 13 business days since my LORs were sent, and it still says it is missing online. They say it can take "up to 7 business days". Anyone else find it took them this long?

I've been waiting over two weeks to be marked as complete. I called yesterday, and the lady said that they are backed up, but by Wednesday, they should have me marked complete.

LOL okay I shouldn't have used the word "incredibly" but I can't verify the latter because I don't want to identify myself.. but let's just say, I'm really really good at swimming

Nice! Well, if you get an interview invite, send me a PM and we'll host you here and have a pool party during your stay in Hotel MCV.

Does anyone have problems with formatting for the secondary essay? I did what they told us and I can't get the paragraphs to separate with a double space, so it all runs together. What should I do?

*Edit: I figured it out. They said that the formatting may be off on the review page but the admissions office will see it formatted correctly.

Hey guys. In scheduling my interview here. If I interviewed October 8th. Would I be considered in the first round of acceptances? I know it's cutting close. Can flodhi or anyone else provide some insight?

Thanks!

I think you could still be but it's hard to say. I interviewed exactly 2 weeks before the date on which I was ultimately accepted. Regardless, it's not really going to matter since they'll make their decision on your score right after the interview anyway. It just might mean waiting a few extra months for the decision. Interview the earliest date you are comfortable choosing and when you interview, let us know and we'll get you hooked up for some hosting. Good luck!

It's possible but cutting a little too close in my opinion. It really depends on your interviewer and how early he prepares your evaluation for the committee. It could also depend on other factors such as how many other interviewees are being reviewed by the committee. I would highly recommend you try to interview the end of September that way you will definitely get reviewed. If you are having issues with commuting or housing let me know I'm sure music2doc, myself and many other medical students will help you in any way we possibly can.

There are only dates available from October through March. Is it possible that everything is pushed back a little later this year due to the AMCAS process being pushed back a little later?

That is a question you will have to ask the admissions office at VCU. I can tell you that if any changes in the dates are made they will be posted on the website immediately. VCU does a good job in notifying individuals and updating their website.

That's not really information we as med students are privy to (at least not without walking into Admissions and asking them and honestly that probably won't happen as we all -- M1s and M2s -- have major exams coming up this week). 😉 You can always call and ask but I'd probably just sign up for as early as possible and go from there. Sometimes they only offer certain dates, for example, a classmate of mine was offered an interview back in early October for an interview date in March or April, while I was offered one in November for a late Nov/early Dec interview date. My guess (from what I understand of their process) is that your available dates are assigned by priority score. Probably, my friend had a lower initial priority score and so got a later interview. (Of course, this is now irrelevant as we are both in the class and obviously both got high priority scores after interviewing, so I think nothing of it but it is my guess as to why this might have happened.)

ok Thanks guys, yeah october is the only date showing for me, and I have to fly to philly for a jefferson Interview on Oct 3rd, so unfortunatly Oct 8th was the best I could do for VCU.

They've given out plenty of interviews at this point, which is why they are starting to fill up october. My interview is in early september.

Do some mock interviews first. Expect the standard questions...CU-Boulder has a great list of interview questions to check out. Be sure to have plenty of questions to ask them as well, such as q's about the new curriculum.
