I've been complete (according to the online status page) since 09/24. I got an email 2 nights ago that my status changed! I thought it was a possible interview invite but when I logged on it only said I was complete.

Not cool VCU!

That happened to me twice during the same week about a month ago, and nothing has happened since. I think I'm done for VCU. 🙁

II today! Received the "may" status a few weeks ago! Very happy about this-- for those of you who have received a status similar to mine previously-- we all got hope!

Good luck all, and congrats to those of you accepted!

So what does this status change mean... "Your file is complete, and has been forwarded to the Admissions Committee for further decison."

Is it just another complete status?

i believe it is very likely since they meet every monday

I can confirm this. A classmate's mother is on the adcom and her "admissions" days are Monday afternoons. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean they all come in on Mondays but at least her subcommittee does their work that day. (She is on a subcommittee that extends interview invites from what I am told.)

Got the "MAY" status about a week and a half ago. OOS, so does that mean it will take longer to receive an interview invite?

Oh geez...that's not very comforting 🙁
But as someone said in the Panic Thread, if you're not rejected you still have a shot.

Could someone who has interviewed comment on what they thought about Richmond? I'm very excited about VCU but hesitant about the area. I have heard from some people that there is a very high crime rate in Richmond, but I'm wondering if that is in the area right around the med school. Do most med students live in a place that is relatively safe? What were your impressions of the city? Thanks!

I too had the same concerns. I stayed with a student host who lived just east of downtown Richmond and about a 10-15 minute walk to VCU School of Medicine. It looked to me (and I've read elsewhere) that this area was once pretty rough, but in recent years, I think it's become very gentrified, and the crime rate has consequently dropped. Many old/abandoned buildings where crime might have "brewed" before have been turned into nice apartments or retail areas. And the truth is, there is crime in every city, and no matter where you are, you have to play it smart by not walking alone at night, not going into sketchy looking areas, etc... If you follow these rules, you'll be safe in most cities, most parts of Richmond included.

For what it's worth, my host lived in a recently renovated tobacco warehouse...his place was awesome, and it was affordable to boot. At no point during my visit to Richmond did I feel I was in danger or in a bad neighborhood. This included my 10-15 minute walk to the medical campus. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the area.

So you stayed down where I live. (Was I your host?) That's a decent area. Students don't really live where the crime occurs, which is mostly about 1-2 mi west of the med school -- closer to our UG campus. The medical school itself is pretty safe and while Richmond is very poor, this really makes for a part of MCV's identity. You'll notice that the best clinical educations tend to come for med schools in poorer areas (JHU comes to mind...). This is probably for a few reasons, including that the schools are older (consequently, so are the local communities) and that the schools get greater patient loads due to poverty (patients who can afford to go somewhere where they won't be treated by students tend to prefer to get the best basic care, which is rarely what is being rendered in an academic center, contrary to popular belief). That said, they have done a lot of work to improve Richmond's downtown and it is pretty safe and becoming nicer. We have all kinds of bars and clubs downtown and the UG campus has an "Uptown"-style district known as The Fan that is sort of newer, "hipper" downtown. When it comes to crime, you won't have any problems if you play things smart and the VCU police are great at letting you know every situation that occurs within a mile or so from campus -- sometimes toogood of a job!

People who have been accepted/waitlisted/rejected, when did your status change online? I thought I was told during the interview day that after the committee reviews are file post-interview, that we then receive a ranking number on the status page. The committee was supposed to meet on Monday, but my status page just shows the survey that I already took.

I don't think u ever know what your priority score or ranking number as you call it is. It will just say you've been ranked and will be notified of your decision at the listed dates. It took two weeks for me to get an email saying my file had been discussed and ranked after my interview.

Trying to figure that out myself and if I should attend my interview. Convince me guys! Never been to or near Virginia...

Nope, you don't.

man why is vcu so popular?

Virginians really seem to like it -- that is, it was a lot of people's top choice in my class. All I can really say is the programs are solid and there are a lot of opportunities. It's also in a fairly nice location with the James River within a couple of miles of campus, the beach 90 min one way and the mountains 90 min the other.... Good location, nice weather, decent med-size metro area with fairly easy access to DC.

Umm... depends what you're wanting in a school. I generally wouldn't turn down an interview unless you already have at least 1 acceptance you would really want to attend. MCV is a solid program with great clinical opportunities, very best board prep (we have the Step 1 Queen -- Dr. Linda Costanzo), solid research, one of the nations largest health center campuses (and the #1 hospital system in VA, better than Inova or UVA), etc.

Mostly an unimportant question but...

If we were passed over for the first round of acceptances, is it likely that we will just have to wait until the waitlist is formed or is it actually common for people to hear back on the 2nd or 3rd acceptance dates? I know there are plenty of great applicants who weren't eligible for the first date, who now appear on the med school's list for determining offers.

Bored and curious.

If we've been under the MAY status for a couple of months now does that pretty much mean a silent rejection?

Previous VCU students in this thread said that your priority score bumps up a little bit after every acceptance date and it's not uncommon to be pulled off at any given one depending on the scores of the rest of the applicants.

Congrats! Glad you got a date before the 15th, so you can hear back soon!

To the Dec 6 Canadian student interviewing. I scheduled my date for a week before yours, this morning (over Nov 15th which was also available).
It is cool, because we are both Canadian ( I'm dual of Canada and america) and we are for fmstat! These admissions folks are very cool.

Your priority score is set, but the acceptance score drops gradually each acceptance date is how I understand it; however, while we students might be great for telling you how classes, etc. are we have freaking clue how Admissions works! It really remains largely a "black box" once you're in med school. The one thing I will say is I feel like I better understand why they look for certain qualities. As a student, you begin to see how certain attributes would be beneficial or harmful within the class as well as what sorts of "highly qualified" individuals might just not be a good fit here. For that reason, I would suggest meeting students when you come to interview here as those students can both tell you about their experience here and, perhaps, give you some hints as to what a good fit at VCU really looks like.

Nice! I hope we both make it. I would've scheduled it earlier but I have labs and also such short-notice plane tickets are a fortune!

I feel that Dec 6 is before Dec 15 anyway, so I probably won't have a reduced chance of acceptance for interviewing later (I hope!)

Good luck and keep me posted on how it goes!

Just Withdrew my application. I had an interview Dec 12th. Hoping someone who really wants to go here gets the slot!!!!

I just interviewed here on Monday, and I have to say it's probably my first choice now. In your opinion what would you say are the "beneficial attributes" that the adcom might be looking for? What do you think makes a good fit for VCU? I thought my interview went well and I can definitely see myself here, but I'm just curious as to what you as a medical student think...?

  • Commitment to underserved populations
  • A relaxed, cooperative, yet determined approach to academics
  • Interests in both research and clinical medicine with a balance toward the clinical side
  • Flexibility -- especially with the new curriculum being implemented next yr (this will be a critical quality they'll be looking for)
  • Compassion, empathy, and understanding of those less fortunate and from different backgrounds than yourself
I would say the majority of my classmates exhibit at least 3 or 4 of those 5 attributes most of the time.

Just interviewed here yesterday! Can any current VCU med students shed light on if there's any preference for taking VCU undergrads? (like myself 🙂 )

We have a few in my class. No idea what their stats were but many (most?) were in the guaranteed admit program. I have no idea what your chances are from outside that program.

Yeah most of the VCU undergrad kids were in the guaranteed program.

I know several people who were accepted that were NOT in the guaranteed program. You should be fine, and just just as good of a chance as everyone else.

Hey all, I was rejected after secondary applications but before interview months ago.

Cgpa 3.72
Sgpa 3.61

Mcat, 10PS 8VR 8BS

Was there anything glaring in my stats? I heard that vcu does a holistic approach to apps and does not weight stats "as much".

I thought my mcat score isn't terrible and is in range as it was in drexel. I got pre interview rejected from drexel too.

those who know vcu well, I would like feedback please. Thanks.

Unfortunately a 26 on the MCAT is kind of low compared to other applicants. Even with stellar ECs

Your MCAT is low. It's definitely not, as you say, "in range" for VCU or Drexel. A 26 is well below the 10th percentile for both schools.

Consider that a 28 is 62nd-68th percentile, and a 26 is 50th-56th percentile. That's a change upwards of 10%, a huge difference in what seems like a small difference in MCAT scores.

The same thing happened to me. Can somebody please shed light on this? Has anyone gotten the status update to nothing but subsequently got a real update? Was it good news?

Well it's great that they gave you a secondary, VCU tends to be slightly picky about sending out secondaries. If you don't get accepted to a medical school this year, I would advise you to retake and reapply. I'm sure if you do a little better on the MCAT (score > 29) you will be given an interview especially if you have strong ECs and are a Virginia resident.

Yeah, if my 8s would have been 9s, what a BIG difference. It hurts being so close. 🙁

but my score is competitive for DO schools and ill be happy there. Already had one DO interview at lake erie. I was so proud.

Congratulations! Lake Erie is a wonderful school and I'm sure you will have a great interview 👍

Congratulations! Lake Erie is a wonderful school and I'm sure you will have a great interview 👍

I did have a FANTASTIC interview October 26th, 2012. I loved the school, atmosphere, resources, and curriculum. Lake Erie is a strong choice for me.

I feel likely to get in. I deferred my decision to December so I could hear from other DO schools.

I am obviously not holding my breath for MD schools. Regardless, I want to have several interviews to ensure I pick the ideal school for me.

Thanks for your words. BTW, I am a Maryland resident. I was OOS for VCU, therefore.

music2doc, thanks for the info, hopefully I conveyed some of those things in my interview. Crossing my fingers until Dec.15!

II just now! got the MAY status a little over a week ago. earliest dates now are in mid January!

Just got another email and my status changed to this:

Your M.D. file is now complete. The Admissions Committee will now do a comprehensive review of your application. Once the review is complete, your file will be prioritized, and interviews will be granted based on your priority score and the date your file was completed. Please do not call the Admissions Office requesting special dates.

Is this any different from the previous statuses about being complete? I feel like they're all saying the same thing, and all these emails are giving me mini-heart attacks 🙁

+1. I was complete late August. MAY status a little over a week ago also!

Same for me but when i try to look at interview dates it says no spots are available and that i should email them. Has this happened to anyone else?

It happened to me too. Spots will open randomly, you just have to keep checking the portal. There were no spots available yesterday but today there was one.

that happened to me when i was invited last thursday. i emailed them and told them that i was interested and that i would keep looking. then, a spot opened up the next day. :luck:

I've had the MAY status since October 8th, and I am starting to worry about my chances of receiving an II. Is VCU open to letters of interest or update letters?

In regards to letter of updates it depends on if it's a significant update or some desperate attempt to get the schools attention. Letter of interests in my opinion are a good idea for individuals that get on the waitlist, I don't know how VCU reacts to them prior to an interview. I know an applicant that sent one this cycle but it didn't really help but who knows?
I would say if you truly have an update that you believe will make a difference in your application then by all means send it.

So If I have not heard anything from them since early September in regards to a status change, or interview invite, should I assume rejection?

Not necessarily. I had been complete since August then last week got a status change to the MAY status then an II a week later. Don't lose hope!
