What is this "may" status everyone keeps referring to?

The "may" status is the #2 status in the post below...it essentially means that they like you but might not have enough interview slots for people at your priority score. For what it's worth, people have gotten interviews from both "may" and "further," although I would guess that "may" is a little better at this point in the application cycle.

Also from last year's post:

"Application Status:

1) "The Committee's file review indicates that they are very interested in your candidacy. There is another increase in the applicant pool this year, but we are trying to get all candidates at your priority score interviewed as soon as possible. Please watch for an e-mail from us regarding a possible interview date."

2) "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are able to grant an interview you will be notified by e-mail."

3) "The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

4) "The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Since they have some reservations about granting an interview, your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

5) "REJECTED"

#1 - you are interviewed
#2/3 - may be interviewed (still not sure how they are different or which is better)
#4 - subcommitee message
#5 - rejection."

I've had the MAY status for a little under 3 weeks. No interview invite yet...and some of you got invites just a week after status change. What's going on? Is this like a silent rejection or did they change their minds??

I'm not sure. I think it's just a continuum of scores that receive the "may" status-- i.e., some are on the higher end, and some on the lower. You just don't know what they're looking for. I wouldn't dwell on it, though. It's still early! You got this. Just remain optimistic, even though it's difficult.

It took me four weeks from receiving a MAY to getting an interview.

I have an inkling "further" might actually be better. "May" says they might not be able to interview you. "Further" seems to show more interest. Plus, I feel that response times are faster with "further." Most of the "Mays" I hear about wind up waiting quite a bit.

I got the "further" status on a Sunday night and got the II phone call early Monday morning (i.e. around 12 hours later).

That being said, I don't think y'all should be reading too much into it. Whatever happens, happens. There isn't much you could do about it once you've already sent in your app.

I don't think anyone really knows if the "further" or "may" status is better. I got my interview email a week after my "may" status update.

im OOS and had the further status for two weeks before my interview invite

I got the further status and then went back to the complete status the next day. That was 3 weeks ago. Unless you get an II, all you can do is wait or throw LOIs and updates at them.

This was extremely helpful, thank you so much!

Do we know if everyone who interviews gets a post-interview hold? Or is it just sent to a certain few?

Do we know if everyone who interviews gets a post-interview hold? Or is it just sent to a certain few?

Their FAQ page says:

"Why haven’t I received correspondence from you yet, when my interview was months ago?
You should have received an e-mail within a few weeks of your interview, advising you to check the status page where you would be placed on hold or notified that we will not pursue your file further. For those on hold, no further correspondence will take place until we are ready to make an offer or place you on the alternate list."

So, in theory, you either get the hold message or a rejection within a couple weeks of your interview...has anyone been rejected post-interview this year?

I actually suspect the opposite based upon the data and the wording but it is neither here nor there. Maybe one of these days, I'll ask Dr. Cook what they mean...but don't hold your breath!

Regardless, good luck and may the odds be always in your favor....

I had the "further review" status for 2 months, but received an interview invite for January 22 a week ago. OOS - Texas

I've had the further stats for about 2 months as well. Did you send any updates or letters of interest to VCU?

My application was complete in July, and received the Further review status. However, I re-took the MCAT in September and my score was updated in October. I received the II on November 6.

Ok, thanks! I was just getting antsy and overanalyzing the whole thing. I'd thought perhaps getting a "hold" was maybe more of an inclination towards the waitlist or vice versa, or some other crazy theory.

May status finally!!!! I was complete early September

For those of us who interviewed last week (I was 11/7), can we expect the standard "on hold" status this coming Monday? Or does it sometimes take longer?

Are any current students here members of SNMA? I met with a representative from the organization after our lunch/tour. Would you suggest joining? I'm Latino with an interest in giving back to underserved populations.

Does anyone knwo if the reject soon post interview ? Or do they keep you on hold until may?

You have to do something really bad to get rejected right away post interview. I think everyone goes on hold and is either wait-listed or accepted at first. Rejections don't come until later I think.

Not necessarily. I had been complete since August then last week got a status change to the MAY status then an II a week later. Don't lose hope!

what gives.. I've been complete since the first week of sept with no updates.... c'mon VCU show me some LOOOVVVEE.

Rejected after subcommittee.
30Q, 3.74, VCU undergrad

Ouch, dude! Sorry to hear that. Good luck with your other apps.

Ouch! I would have thought that they'd give you preference since you went to their undergrad, are IS and have fairly decent stats.

You'd think, but it seems like most VCU grads at MCV (in my class anyway) were in the guaranteed program. Not so sure they give much preference to their own grads. They really seem to like W&M and UVA grads....

I interviewed 11/5 and just got the hold status today. Can't wait til 12/15!

Does anyone have suggests on where to eat dinner the night before? I will be in Richmond in two hours and am staying right next to the school and capital building.

Capital ale house was pretty decent

Trying to figure that out myself and if I should attend my interview. Convince me guys! Never been to or near Virginia...

Virginia is the promised land. Not much else can rival its beauty, people, or economy. VCU is a nationally ranked art school, making the city full of artistic flair. The medical college has a strong history and is well-respected.

By all means, please don't attend your interview as I would rather go in your place.

SERIOUSLY!? Awesome! I had no idea! I'm an artist - yet another reason why I feel like I'd be a good fit for the VCU environment and why I'm so excited about the prospect of going to that school! I am so excited for that interview it's not even funny. VCU is my first choice.

According to the admissions office, since December 15th is on a Saturday, they may send out offers on the day before or the following Monday.

When you get the "hold" status after you interviewed, does this indicate the admissions committee has made a decision? Then of course, you find out Dec 15th or the other published notification dates.

I was wondering about this too. Dec 15 is a Saturday so I don't think we'll hear on the 15th. I'm guessing we hear after that weekend, but it would be great to hear back earlier.

Just interviewed and at the airport already and ready to go home. A really nice school. It will be even nicer when they finish off the new building. I could see myself going here. Hopefully the interviewer was being serious when he said I was the most enjoyable person he has spoken to. I would love to get an acceptance.

I too just interviewed here and your location freaked me out.

I interviewed here a little over a month ago. Really loved it and Richmond. I interviewed with a few people (there was a slight mix up), but, I felt like I didn't really click with the the last interviewer and I could have answered some of their questions better- (this interview is the one that counted for the MD program). The others went great. I know they don't seem to like Letters of Interest, but is there any way that I can continue to express how excited I am for this opportunity? I hate that one interviewer may be able to control my fate here.

Is anyone who interviewed at the end of October still waiting for a post-interview status update? My status is still the same one from before my interview showing my scheduled interview.....I'm thinking this can't mean anything good. Hope I'm wrong.

It might not necessarily be bad. They mentioned when I interviewed a few weeks ago that they were behind due to some conference or something, I believe. I know it is hard, it is for me too, but hang in there and try not to worry yet.

If it makes you feel any better, I didn't get the post-interview change until a day before I was accepted. It's something EVERYONE gets, even if you're being waitlisted, or rejected, so the timing of getting it shouldn't mean anything. Only thing that matters is that you get the status before one of their decision days.

When I applied last year, it took about two months for me to get the post-interview status. So if you haven't heard back yet, no worries. It just means they haven't presented your file to the adcom yet.

Good luck. Glad you enjoyed your time here. The new building looks awesome. Can't wait for the spring tour.... As for the interview, you never know. It's the committee's opinion that matters ultimately.

Your interviewer is just one piece of the puzzle. The committee makes the decision so while "clicking" is helpful, it is not always the biggest determinant, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. You can always write a letter but I doubt it will make any real difference. Your acceptance priority score has already been set. The only thing a letter can do it get you placed higher (or lower) within the group of candidates at your same score. I do know of one of my classmates who got pulled off the WL last-minute b/c she had sent them a letter of intent in the summer (after being waitlisted, not before) and they ended up pulling her off toward the front of the group at her priority score.

Hello,

I got an email today from VCU that I needed to check my status change. When I logged on into the website I did not see any changes. I have been complete for a while and I'm still complete. Should I tried to contact the university to find out what the email was about?

Thanks
