I was a speaker at VCU's sustainability conference today...thought I'd pop over to the admissions office and see if I can get my decision early...nope. Denied.

And yea, she said we will find out a little after 6pm.

Probably not a good idea to do this in the future at different schools. It's kind of annoying to the administrative assistant or whomever you talked to.... 😉 They're also super busy with other interviews (as in interviewing current students for jobs in the office in addition to running regular interviews) right now and are getting ready to move their office.

got status change saying the've discussed my file and anticipate sending decision tomorrow
I interviewed on 1/24

I had that status change the day before they released my acceptance. Hopefully sign of good things to come for you.

That status change isn't the one that mentioned either finding out in feb OR march, right? I interviewed during the 1st week of jan and got a status change about 2 weeks thereafter that mentioned that they had reviewed my file and anticipated decisions being mailed either in feb or march. :/ I guess that might not bode well for me? But good for you, regardless!

Edit - more specifically, my status change said that my 'application would be placed on hold for action at a later date'...then it listed the diff dates (feb 1, mar 16, etc). I'm not sure, so maybe this means I won't get any news tomorrow :/. Anyone else have this same status?

That's the same one, it's supposed to be a good sign!

No you should be fine. In my case, as well as OP's case, I think the change is important when your interview date was very close to the date of possibly being accepted. Some people from my interview date didn't get the status change, and were subsequently not accepted. But if you get the status change right before a possible acceptance date, I think it's a sign that they've made a decision. Knowing their rarely reject people, and only waitlist in May, it could very well likely be an acceptance.

Or my theory is absolute nonsense. Guess we'll find out soon.

Ah, I see! Thanks for clarifying 🙂. Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

I interviewed in mid-October but didn't hear anything back in December. Hopefully I'll hear something tomorrow. Did anyone who interviewed early on not hear anything for their first decision date, but was then accepted the second time around in December? Not sure if I should get my hopes up or anything.

Yes, this happens (although it did not happen to me personally).

And really, guys, there aren't "good status update clues" or "bad status update clues." You all read WAAAAAY to much into all this. MCV Admissions does not have enough times to play these games with you. Updates this week are happening b/c they are BEHIND on application reviews and the AdCom policy to look at every application before rejecting anyone. They are out of interview spots but are still going through applications submitted toward the deadline. I would guess post-interview reviews are behind as well.

I didn't get in from the December date. Here's hoping this time will be different. Does anyone know how many people will likely find out tomorrow?

My guess would be 50 since there are 4 dates and they need to fill 200 seats by March 31

ahh thank you. So does that mean that VCU doesn't overfill their class (which probably means a good amount of waitlist movement)?

I don't really know. I was accepted straight out from my interview, so I know little of that since it wasn't really relevant to my application. Sorry. I know there is some waitlist movement every yr but schools will likely be fairly careful this yr since last yr there was almost 0 waitlist movement nationally. (Sorry, guys.)

so interviewed early october and did not hear back on dec, can i still look up for today or its done for me. Has anyone gotten accepted on a later acceptance day in the past?

So just to clarify, if I didn't get a status change update email and I interviewed in January, I for sure wont hear back tomorrow?

I just got a status update that say they MAY grant me an interview:

The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are unable to grant an interview, you will be notified by e-mail in March.

I haven't yet gotten an interview, and honestly this is the best news I've heard so far from med schools besides rejection/waitlist. I'm OOS.

From what I've heard, there is a fair amount of wait list movement from the OOS list but not much for IS... I was placed on hold for the next date 🙁 really keeping my fingers crossed that I make the cut next time! aaaah :scared:

Good luck! Hopefully things will go well for you on the next notification date. What did your status update say exactly?

You mean you received a status today that said you're being considered for March 16th? I think you're referring to the hold status that everyone gets who doesn't get rejected post-interview (you're placed on hold... further action Oct 16 Dec 15 Feb 1 March 16... etc.) .... which today happens to be that next date :naughty:.

I hate to tell you this but I can tell you virtually without question that you should plan to reapply if this is the case. A "may" at this point is a "no." The only status that might snag you an interview at this point in the game would be the "We are VERY interested and will contact you shortly for an interview date" status. A "may" indicates interest, but at this point ALL interview slots are full (according to members of our AdCom) and special requests by committees members are required to offer an interview. I don't like that they are getting your hopes up and I hope I have heard incorrectly, but please do not be caught off-guard and begin planning to reapply. I tell you this so that you'll be ready and not caught short on time to correct weaknesses in your app that may have resulted in your ending up in this spot in the first place.

I did not know this. But they seemed fine with it. I think my charm helped haha. I'll keep it in mind for future schools. Thanks**

I received a "further" status yesterday. Is there virtually no chance of me getting an interview invite at this point in the cycle? Has anyone else received a further status recently? Has anyone received a further status and then received an invite shortly afterward?

Coming across as nice and charming certainly helps over coming off as a jerk or demanding, but I would just be cautious about that kind of thing. I will say that in the opinion of a director of admissions I used to work with, behavior that is bad enough to make them say something has to be pretty severe (such as extreme rudeness) and then you usually don't hear about it from the person you said something to. It's a call from the Dean. I doubt your question would have reached that level, but it could have made them a little annoyed.

No, there really isn't unless you are a truly outstanding applicant. People will be getting those updates this week and next because the Committee has an official policy to screen EVERY application that comes in prior to the deadline. They are working to get through the remainder of them by the end of today as I understand. The policy is in place to avoid missing a truly stellar applicant who submitted late and should not be missed who has a "legitimate reason for submitting late." In other words, they are now looking for that 35 MCAT/3.8 GPA army officer who submitted late because he was battling wildfires out West over the summer before finishing his service time in the fall. Due to the wildfires, he didn't have time to apply early, but they certinaly don't want to miss him, so they are searching for stellar applicants like him. If an evaluator finds one, they will send Dr. Cook and other key committee members an email asking to have this person interviewed despite there being no slots left. There is always the possibility you fit into this category, but I would not count on it. If you believe you might be, THEN it is possible the "Further" status is actually due to your application catching someone's eye and requesting an interview slot be created for you. I am not sure how often that actually happens nor how often the request is honored. I assume it is rare but varies depending upon many different factors.

I interviewed early January but apparently the school said that they haven't met to discuss my file and I won't hear anything back til march 15th. Sigh I wonder why people who interviewed after me had their files discussed. Bad luck I guess.

I wouldn't read too much into this. The most likely reason is that your interviewer couldn't make the committee meets on the next Mondays.

Happened to me with my early Dec interview. Hoping to find out this time! Luckily it doesn't seem to matter too much at this school because of how they hand out acceptances (ie if you're score is strong enough, they make an offer and each time the score needed gets easier). Good luck!
