If anyone has any questions about the interview process, don't hesitate to ask. I know you all will love this school! Good luck to everyone else who is still waiting. Plenty of time left.

I am the 3.6/26S guy and I love how my SDN family have my back 🙂

So I submitted my secondary on 7/8 but I have not had any contact from the school since the "order_confirmation" email. Does wright send out emails with notification of complete/review/rejections? Or are they one of the more silent schools? I'd really love to hear back from them 🙂

They sent a complete email a few days after I paid, then I heard nothing until I got an interview.

I have not even gotten the complete email...maybe I should give them a call since its been a couple months...

Edit: oops! Just did a search in my gmail and saw that I DID get the email for being complete but I hadn't labeled it properly which is why I couldn't find it lol. Sorry for the unnecessary posts guys.

Well said GlasshalfMD👍

You're entitled to think what you want, just as we're entitled to root for the underdog and yearn for a basic level of respect. We have absolutely no sway when it comes to people's applications, trust me. But two years ago, we were given a chance and we were encouraged, and we want to extend that courtesy to future students (and hopefully moderate some of the bad attitudes and bad feelings). I'm sorry you feel that this is a poor reflection of our school. We're in no way meaning to be threatening - just hopeful that applicants are aware that in this day and age of internet obsessions, one needs to be aware that comments they make in writing can stick with them and reflect poorly. I love love love Wright State for its commitment to being inclusive, team-oriented, community-oriented, and overall good-spirited. It just worries me when I see what could be interpreted as "cut-throat" behavior in an application thread, because that could translate into one's lifestyle while in medical school - and we just don't want that here. My classmates and I truly meant no offense, we just have so much passion for our school and our class that we want to uphold what we've grown to love and make sure that those things carry over into future classes. We wish you the best of luck.

I interviewed here yesterday and I really loved the school.

As far as the interviews go, you really should not stress too much about it. They really just want to get a sense of who you are as a person, there were no trick questions. Honestly, it felt like a conversation with a friend. All of my interviewers were very friendly and did a good job of making it a low stress environment. Just make sure you truly know who you are as a person, our tour guide told us to speak from the heart, and I felt that’s what they were assessing.

The facilities were nice. All of the students and faculty/staff were very friendly and welcoming. When I was leaving for the day, I was stopped several times in the parking lot by students who asked how everything went, some even offered me their e-mail address incase I have any questions about the school.

Overall it was a great day. It is an excellent school with a great community. If I am offered an acceptance here, I will definitely be attending (the entire interview day confirmed that I loved this place)! Best of luck to everybody else interviewing here!!

When were you complete? do you mind sharing your stats?

Question regarding LOE. Do this need to be sent before the app is completed? Is your app pending for review until they are received? Also, some said max was 3 while others said 5. Any official word?

We ask for a Committee Letter and with that you may send two additional letters of recommendation. If you do not have a Committee Letter we ask that you keep individual letters to a maximum of 5. Two need to come from SCIENCE professors, the others from any other source.

You may send your letters to AMCAS anytime before the deadline of December 15.

I would love to get an interview invite to this school. By the way, I am an underdog trying to get in...3.4gpa, 25Q MCAT, and Chem/Bio major. I have interviews at University of Louisville, University of Kentucky, Indiana University, and West Virginia University. I am disadvantaged and have alot of doctor shadowing, volunteering, extracurricular activities. Try to keep your head up underdogs in this process. Also, apply to schools that you think you can get into. I have applied to DO schools also which is probably my best chances of getting into medical school. Also, many students with 45T and 4.0gpa's get rejected from schools because they might suck at interviews due to lack of ability to communicate with others.

I think you made some sweeping generalizations. If somebody with a 36+/3.9+ got rejected from Wright State, I think that they were rejected on the basis that they are probably applying to several other higher tier schools and wouldn't go to Wright State even if they were offered acceptance. I'm guessing that from WSU's POV, interviewing such a candidate would be a waste of time when they could interview another candidate in their range. Also, just because somebody has really good numbers doesn't mean they can't communicate.

I didn't mean everyone of them couldn't communicate. I do have friends with 38+ MCAT and 4.0 gpa who did not get in to med school last year because they could not interview well. Also, thank you for the additional point about why someone with superb stats would get rejected.

Can you guys give more detail about the area the campus is in? I spoke to someone from Dayton at another interview and they told me Wright State is in a really small/rural area. Any truth to that? Also, how new are the facilities?

I would say that Wright State is basically located in your standard suburb. I wouldn't necessarily call the area rural... maybe when you go a little farther away from downtown. It's not like, in the middle of a field or something. You could google maps Wright State and drag that little yellow guy out to street view if ya wanna take a look.

The facilities are pretty new. WSU probably had one of the nicest / most aesthetically pleasing buildings out of all the places I interviewed. It makes sitting in White Hall for like 14 hours straight not AS bad.

I was told WSU doesn't have it's own teaching hospital. Is that accurate? Where (how far from the campus) are the rotation sites?

Kind of.

http://www.med.wright.edu/csm

I would say they are all within 10-15 minutes from campus. Maybe 20 at the most.

Thanks! Looks like a nice setup assuming all of those hospitals have reputable programs. I know the quality of a school isn't always related to the median matriculant stats, but I am honestly a little worried about the stats at WSU.. It seems hypocritical for me to say, since I'm a low stat applicant myself, but I can't help it.

For the most part, if you are going to an accredited US medical school the ‘quality’ of the education you receive is going to be similar wherever you go. The way each school chooses to structure that education may vary but I think its fair to say that all US grads graduate with similar levels of knowledge. Wright state is no different. The students who graduate from Wright State are equally as prepared to enter residency as any another other graduate from any other school.

I, however, have a suspicion that your use of ‘quality’ was intended to be more specific than that. So to hit the high points…

If you are talking about the ‘quality’ of students at Wright State: I have never doubted the ability and talent of any of my fellow classmates. You will not be the smartest kid in class don’t worry. Haha. Again that can be said about students at any other medical school.

If you are talking about the ‘quality’ of teachers at Wright State: We have good professors and we have bad professors just like everywhere else. You get taught what you need to know and you supplement that knowledge with outside resources (especially in terms of board prep). That again is pretty standard for most medical schools.

If your use of ‘quality’ indirectly means ‘reputation’: As an applicant it is hard not to get caught up in ‘stats’ and ‘rank’. I think most students realize that that does not matter much once they actually get into medical school. Where you end up for residency is largely dependent on you not the medical school you attend. If you are lucky enough to get multiple acceptances my advice would be to focus on other aspects when considering which medical school to attend. Do I like the way the curriculum is structured? Do I fit in well with the student body? How engaged are the faculty members? Do I like the area? How far away from my family will I be? How much will it cost me to go here? I think these are the important questions you should ask yourself. Basically the short answer is that if you attend Wright State ‘reputation’ will not get in the way of you perusing any residency you want.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask. As you might have noticed there are a number of current students who keep a close eye on these forums.

Yea you hit the nail on the head talking about reputation and matching. Do you plan on staying in ohio for residency?

I haven't put much thought into it. It wouldn't surprise me if I left. Do I worry that graduating from Wright State will make it difficult to get into a residency program outside of Ohio? No. Like I said in my earlier post, where you end up for residency is largely dependent on you not the medical school you attend. There are ways for you to stand out to programs not familiar with your school (boards scores, clinical grades, away rotations, etc.). This is not unique to Wright State. Even students from ‘well-known' medical schools face similar circumstances. If a certain residency program is not familiar with the type of student that comes from a school, name recognition is not really going to make a difference. Also keep in mind that Wright State has been sending students to residencies all across the country for years. It may surprise you how many programs are familiar with Wright State and the type of students it produces.

I can't emphasize enough how spot on this all is, especially what kinds of questions you should ask yourself when choosing a medical school. I think if you consider these things rather than stats, you'll end up choosing whatever school is the best fit for you and thus the place you will end up being the most successful.

At the time it was a hard decision, but I turned down an acceptance at a school with higher average GPA / MCAT and a more well known name to come to BSOM after considering these things. Of course I can't ever know for sure, but I honestly think if I had ended up going to that school instead I wouldn't be doing nearly as well as I am doing here because of all of those factors that are harder to publish on paper (type of student body, faculty, environment, etc). I think because I am happier here, I study better, do better in class, and will (hopefully) do better on my boards than I would have done at the other school that didn't seem to "fit" my own personal needs. I know there are a good number of my classmates who were in the same situation and echo my same sentiments.

Also, according to WSU's website about 1/3 of the class last year matched in Ohio. I don't think that's a far cry from a few of the other schools here with higher MCAT/GPA averages. Again, like MattyBee said, it's REALLY about personal achievement rather than school reputation.

Has anyone who confirmed for their interview received a confirmation email that is supposed to detail what the day is about? I confirmed sometime last week/week and a half ago and haven't received the email yet. Jw, thanks!

Anyone think IIs will go out this week?? complete since 7/17 and looking for some in state love

I'm from Dayton, so I can help you out. Wright State is about a 15-20 minute drive from downtown Dayton, but Dayton isn't really much of a happening city. I was born and raised there (only left for college), and could count on one hand the number of times I actually went into the city. However, there's a decent mall that's a 2 minute drive from WSU and another one that's 15 minutes away (Fairfield Commons/The Greene if you want to look them up). I wouldn't say it's very rural, but it certainly doesn't have a city to it. It's basically your standard suburb. Anything that you need is within a 10-15 minute drive.

Hope this helps!

Feel free to PM me if you have any further questions about the area (I can help out a little with UC/OSU as well, especially in contrasting the different cities).

That's perfect, thanks! How does it compare to Cincinnati (city and school)?

I'm not extremely familiar with UCCOM (interviewing there later this month though), but I can help with comparing Cincy and Dayton. Cincinnati is a pretty conservative city compared to Dayton, but there's more happening in the city itself (pro sports, theatre, concerts). For both schools you definitely need a car. If you visit either, things to try are Skyline Chili and Graeter's ice cream. Also, when going to either you should definitely fly into the Dayton airport, Cincinnati is crazy expensive and in northern Kentucky, not Cincinnati (and travel time will be about the same from both to UC). UC isn't in the best of areas, while I can't imagine that you would feel unsafe at WSU.

It's also fairly easy to visit Columbus from WSU (about an hour drive). It's my personal favorite of the three, very liberal, probably has the best options/variety for food. Also has the Buckeyes (pro sports in Ohio leave something to be desired).

Let me know if I can be of help in any other way.

Although the Cincinnati airport is more expensive, it's only about 20 minutes away. Dayton airport will be at least a 45 minute drive.

Takes me <30 minutes to get from WSU to the Dayton airport, FWIW.

So, how would I get to Cinci from the Dayton airport? I'm <25 so renting a car might end up being as expensive as just flying into Cinci.

You'll probably have to rent a car if you fly into the Cincinnati airport regardless. The Cincinnati airport is south of the city and UC is north of the city so it'd be an expensive cab ride.

Ugh.. maybe I'll just make the 6 hour drive

You would have to rent a car, there is very little public transportation in Ohio. It's about an hour drive down I-75 to Cincinnati from Dayton airport.
If you fly in to Cincinnati it's probably a 30 minute drive, but there might be some hotel shuttles available depending on where you're staying. I know UC has an airport shuttle but I'm not sure if it's just for current students, you might want to call them and ask

On the phone I was told to be there no later than 11:30 if I remember correctly. I live in the Detroit area so I was just thinking about driving up there the day of. I'd just wake up really early and try to get there 10:30-11 just in case of traffic, etc.

Hi everyone!
I just got an II but they told me to call in to schedule. I am very excited and I hope to meet some of you. Is anyone else interviewing on Tues Oct 15 or Wed Oct 16? Thanks and good luck to all of us :luck:

Did your interview invite come in snailmail or email??

So I sent my application back in July, but didn't send my letters till a couple weeks ago b/c of a lagging letter writer. Anyways, I never received a complete email. Only a "we received your payment" email.

I called them today, and they said that they don't send out status update emails and that if I sent it they should have it. But I'm still concerned. Anyone else not get a complete email?

Well...I mean did the email say: "We have received your secondary payment for application to Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. Your application is now complete."

Pretty sure that means you're complete 🙂

Yes, mine was an email from the admissions coordinator. Does anyone know how long it takes to here back from the interviews? The lady said it would take less time for the earlier ones...

Does anybody know how/when the send out post-interview decisions?

Does anybody know how/when the send out post-interview decisions?

They will e-mail you first, then send a package in the mail. The acceptance e-mail can take as little as 2 weeks to be distributed. Usually, a decision is made within 4-6 weeks post-interview. Of course, this is all based on the application cycle last year.
