2013-2014 Boston University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Medical Student Residence. It's about 2 blocks from campus. I think my student host said about 70% of the first years lived there? 2BR/1 bath with all amenities (includes internet/cable) for ~$900 I think, which is really good for Boston market rates.
Oh, that. Yeah, I thought the concept sounded great; I just wish there was more availability beyond first year, but I guess I can't complain too much about that when most other schools make you find housing for all four years.

I was complete a week ago, how long until i hear back for rejection or interview?

Rejected pre-interview as well. 3.9+/35+, teaching underserved for 2 years. Complete 9/6.

It's impossible to know with just stats. BU does a pretty good job evaluating a student holistically, so they say. Your stats don't disqualify you. Being complete a little late in the season doesn't help but it's just best to sit back and relax instead of worrying about it. If you really like them, you can upload an update letter or letter of interest via their application site.

I received an ii in early September, but my ii date was for Nov 22. Not quite sure how they do their scheduling.

Hey Jabbed - perhaps you were complete earlier than I? I was a little late in the cycle - Oct. 7th.
Or maybe the late Jan. date due to holiday break? Who really knows these things...

Hi! I'm new to sdn and I saw that BU is offering II to individuals who were complete in October. I was complete in mid september and received the 30 day email. I have not been rejected or been II by BU. Is anyone one else on the same boat?

Same here. Complete 9/4.

Most likely withdrawing it though since I got into one of my top choices

Hopefully it goes to someone who really needs it!

I'm sorry about the rejection, I was complete the same day as you but didn't hear anything today, do you mind sharing your stats?

I have a 3.6 GPA and 34 mcat. I also took the mcat 2 yrs ago and got a 30, I'm not sure how BU deals with multiple scores.

II! After having been complete since early September! 3.8/36 OOS

Interviewed here this week. I'm slightly biased since BU was my top choice going into the cycle, but I was so surprised by how they met most of my absurdly idealistic expectations. My only gripe is that they release the bulk of their acceptances mid-March, so most of us will be playing the waiting game until spring.

I thought they release the Oct-Dec interviewee decisions in January and the Jan-Febraury interviewee decisions in March?

Per the dean of admissions, they give out 1/3 of the seats in January and the remaining ones in March.

The order in which people are getting invites and rejections is really throwing me off. It's like, one day, you hear from the mid-October applicants and the next day, you hear from the early September applicants. The unpredictability of it all is killing me! Anyone have any valuable insights on how applicants are reviewed and in what type of order?

The best that I can infer is that there are two separate selection phases. The first one results in either a cherry picked ii, rejection, or silent defferral to the second phase. To me, that's the best explanation for why some people here back positively/negatively within 3 weeks.

Second phase results in either an ii or rejection. It took me about 10 weeks to hear back.

I assume that the criteria for selection are more stringent in the first round.

Whelp, I'm super excited to interview at this school! I love Boston, I get to see my sister, and MGH is a great hospital!

You know MGH is not a BU teaching hospital, right?

BU's main teaching hospital is BMC. Their second main location is the Boston VA and they have various other regional locations.

It's pretty safe to assume that it's a HMS hospital and be told it's not later.

My tour group was told by one of the current students that it's possible to do a rotation in one of the Harvard hospitals, but I don't know how true that is.

I'm sure it's possible. But it would still be a mistake to show up to a BU interview excited about MGH...

I'll keep my love of MGH to myself- until I have the opportunity to rotate through. I will just have to visit BMC to see if I like it!

You can do electives through MGH but you're basically competing for relatively few spots at one of the most popular clinical sites in the country.

Yes indeed. During my interview, I was specifically asked about BMC and that was tied into the whole interview.

got rejected recently. i guess there goes my hope for any schools more competitive than bu as well

Not at all! Anyone on SDN can tell you that this process has a lot of random chance in it- you might interview and be accepted at your top choice school and be rejected at your safety.

hm that's interesting. i don't doubt that it's definitely possible, but i always wondered if what all schools are looking for in applicants is really different. alas, the wait goes on!

Anyone know if BU gives merit scholarship, how much, and how many recipients?

Lol Harvard has a monopoly at MGH and Brigham & women's in a lot of specialties in terms of residency spots. But it's not impossible to match into them if you go to BU, at least according to my interviewer.

They do give them, they said that at my interview day. How much and how many recipients was less clear.

I believe they said it topped off at around $25K/year. How many they gave out was unclear. Everyone is considered, you don't have to apply separately, etc. I doubt they give out a ton though.
