2013-2014 New York University (NYU) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think I would be only a bit disappointed at a waitlist since it's what I expect (devastated at a rejection), but it's the waiting and uncertainty that is more grueling than anything... I really hope that more decisions are being made rather than the school just waiting to release the waitlists/rejections not just because more acceptances might come out, but because otherwise, it's just cruel to make us keep waiting in dread of what's to come 🙁

Do you guys know if all the acceptances are out for NYU or will they send another round of acceptances on the 31st?

And to add to that, do many people get accepted off the wait list?

To anyone still waiting, does your application status still say "Your interview is scheduled for..."? They never updated it to say "interviewed" or anything and I've had my application botched at the receiving end of another school so I'm a little paranoid now...

Congrats!!!

Oh and in case anyone is wondering I doubt the batches are ordered by dates. I interviewed during their very last week of interviews in December and NYU accepts 50% of the people it interviews so it seems unlikely that on SDN only 3 people would be accepted and everyone else placed on the wait list. I hope everyone gets good news! Then I can stop looking at Bieber's mugshot 😉

50% of interviewed? That sounds GREAT to me, but from where did you get this number?

US news (don't know if it's been posted here before)

Applied: 8351
Interviewed: 968
Accepted: 488
Enrolled: 158

Granted, this includes people who get in off the wait list (my tour guide said there's a lot of movement on the wait list - which he was on)

Sorry to bring bad news, but as someone who has been stalking these threads and found good and bad news VERY useful... I was interviewed the second week of December and just got an acceptance. At ~4:25 like everyone else.
Well, there goes that idea 🙂

Well then, fingers crossed for gettin on and then off that wait list 😀 thank you for a glimmer of hope

Also got in today, 4:25 email. Intervieweed first week of Nov

 I interviewed in December also. No word yet. No news is good news-unless Im proven wrong. They have to go through 900+ apps that interviewed. Waiting still stinks!...

but the trick is that the reported 50% isn't accepted all at once. they want to protect their numbers. so acceptances will trickle out. eventually 400-500 offers will be sent out, but they aren't sent out all at once. i imagine there will be a lot of movement in march.

You laugh, but on the morning of my NYU interview, I was reading through the secondary essays that I'd submitted and realized that I'd made THE copy-paste error and told them I was ready for the challenging curriculum of [other prestigious school.] I was mortified, and my friends had to talk me into putting this out of my head for the interview day which, after all, NYU had invited me to attend.

True story. And accepted.

My coworker/classmate/friend called to ask if more acceptances were coming out and the nice lady told her that there are always more that will come out... before August......🙁

so she confirmed that if we didn't hear back yesterday we should expect waitlist/rejection? Or she just avoided answering the question?

good point. i didn't think of it that way. i asked my friend and she said that her tone made it sound like acceptances were all out, but she said she doesn't know now either. -.- well friday is only a few days away and i guess it'll sort itself out.

I am keeping my expectations very low at this point. so disappointing.. ah well...

Well at least there is about ~50% chance to get in off the waitlist:

Applied: 8351
Interviewed: 968
Accepted: 488
Enrolled: 158

Assuming that NYU accepts 1/3, waitlists 1/3, rejects 1/3
then out of 968 people interviewed (US News data posted above), ~323 people are in each category of accepted, waitlisted, or rejected.
If 488 people were accepted in total, then 165(488-323) people were taken off the waitlist.
(165/323)x100% = 51% chance of getting off the waitlist

Not too shabby...

Now if I am rejected, then I will be all tears lol

I asked if nyu is done sending out acceptances and they said "no, there will be another round of decisions out by jan 31"

- could be Friday or before
- they said no, meaning maybe more acceptances or maybe just getting off the waitlist?
- why can't we all get accepted

Well, that doesn't really answer the question unfortunately.

Are they done sending out acceptances? No. They will continue to send them out in order to fill the class. Unfortunately, the "decisions" that they're releasing on (or before) the 31st very well could be entirely waitlists and rejections.

seriously, we all should be accepted. we all seem to be getting along quite well...

Maybe picking the recipients of the giant scholarships takes longer? And maybe they decided to give out a ton of them this year? And so maybe all of us that are waiting are about to have something awesome happen to us?

Optimism, guys!

Anyone interviewed in October? I'm not expecting anything from NYU now.

possibly background check?? Not sure. Good luck to you!

I thought that my MMI at NYU went well but if I get waitlisted or rejected this week, I am going to start worrying about my other MMIs.

Ya that's what I was thinking initially too. I just thought schools usually do a criminal background check (CBC) after you are accepted... B/c they always state that acceptances are conditional upon a successful completion of a CBC.

I'm still keeping the faith. GL to you too!!
