2013-2014 Temple University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Today they said that the committee will be meeting on friday, so decisions will be released early next week if your faculty interviewer is at committee this week. Otherwise not until first or second week of december

does that also apply to those who interviewed at regional campuses?

I interviewed Oct. 23rd, this wait is literally killing me. After going to an interview at another medical school and comparing it to the atmosphere at Temple, I'd be so crushed to not get in.

Every time I get an email, or regular mail, my heart skips a few beats 🙁

Good luck to all!

Any II recently? I was complete at the end of October so I don't know if my file has been passed over :bookworm:

Had the interview this week and it was great! The faculty interview wasn't exactly "laid back", though. I got some questions thrown my way right off the bat about my transcript. The interviewer seemed satisfied with my answer (basically, I was young and immature, and f'ed up), and was like "well, those grades a sort of old, and you did well in your post-bacc and MCAT, so...". I didn't get many questions from the interviewer, and I think I only really got asked "Explain a couple crappy grades", "Why Temple/Philly" and "What's your ideal practice situation 15 years from now". The rest was me asking my interviewer questions, and I was pleasantly surprised by the thoroughness of their answers, especially when I asked about how Temple is involved with the surrounding community, its role as a sort of safety-net hospital, and what he felt were improvements that could be made to the curriculum, and how the upcoming healthcare reform will affect the role of school/hospital within the community and how it will affect future curriculum changes. I thought my interviewer was awesome even if it wasn't exactly laid-back. I love this school and Philly, but I'm not sure I'll actually get in.

Hahaha sounds like we either had the same interviewer or their faculty members work on a script of some sort.

... how the upcoming healthcare reform will affect the role of school/hospital within the community...

I asked my faculty member that question, and I got about five minutes of "No.... just, I mean, no..... no..." I thought I was dead in the water. What did yours say?

They said that it may expand the role of Temple in North Philly but that it will in largely part depend on how much the state and city are willing to invest in the school to take on that role. They said in the short-term changes would mainly be seen in the curriculum as they try to incorporate more classes on health policy and economics, but as far the role of the school goes, the status quo will largely be maintained over the next few years as things shake out after the law takes effect. Of course, this is a summary and this conversation went on for a good five minutes.

Just got an acceptance e-mail here!! Congratulations everyone and good luck to all who are still interviewing/waiting!!

Accepted. IS. Interview on 10/30. Glad to have a choice about where I'll be doing my medical training. Also, Temple is awesome!

Accepted. Glad to have this option; the care for the underserved emphasis at Temple is definitely a huge plus. To be realistic though, I'm going to have to see some serious financial aid to be able to make this one worthwhile - 84k, really?

Nah haha I interviewed way back on Sept 25th. I see you just interviewed recently though?

Yeah, when I interviewed they said that they were meeting today, but that our group was very unlikely to be reviewed that day. For us it'll likely come sometime during the first two weeks of December.

Good luck man! We're rooting for ya!

Accepted! Let's goooooo! Complete 8/21, interviewed 10/8, IS. I hope everyone gets as lucky as I did!

I also interviewed 10/30...no acceptance email. :/ Guess I'll have to wait and see if I was waitlisted or rejected. :< Sigh.

I think you are still completely fine. I believe it just means that the person who interviewed you either did not go to committee this week or didn't have enough time to talk about you at committee. At least I hope so, because I interviewed on 10/18 haha.

I interviewed the 23rd, and still have no email or regular mail response :/
Please accept us all! 🙂

I wonder when the next committee meeting is when they will let us know?

Accepted yesterday via email!
Interviewed 10/24. IS.

So tempted to ask if anyone who interviewed with my interviewer was accepted yesterday or not, but I'm afraid someone will come forward and say they were! Think I'll just wait a few days and see if I get anything in the mail first.

Accepted yesterday!!!! OOS and interviewed at St. Luke's on 10/15. I had a great feeling about the program while I was there.

Still doesn't feel real!

I also got accepted!! I interviewed there on the 15th as well. OOS from CA
Congrats to you!

I really came to love temple after interviewing there. The student body is very relaxed and we support each other. There is also a real drive towards training excellent clinicians, as opposed to the more academic/research orientation I found at other schools. There are great opportunities to serve the north Philly community, and the patient population here won't turn up their noses when they find out you're just a medical student. I also think the MA in urban bioethics is really cool, but I'm biased there. 😛 If you want any more specifics about temple let me know. Sorry we've been a little mia on this thread, but the ms1's just finished our first week and it's a big adjustment. I'll check back when I can to field any specific questions.

Can you give any details regarding the scholarship for the MA in Urban Bioethics? When did you apply? How difficult is it to receive a scholarship for the MA portion? Is it a significantly greater load in comparison to non-dual degree med students?

Any and all information would be very much appreciated!

I know this is very specific, but did anyone interview with Gerald Sterling and find out yesterday, the 15th, that they were accepted?
Yes, I did and I had him as an interviewer.

This year all students automatically received the scholarship. Whether that will continue to hold next year depends on how many enter the program and how the university's funding situation looks. I applied to the MA program during orientation, and upon acceptance the scholarship was immediately awarded. It is still extra tuition that the normal MD students don't have to worry about. What's significant really depends on your situation. I have some specific ideas about how I want to use this degree moving forward, so for me the extra cost is worthwhile. I think once they have the hard numbers for next year (which will be closer to orientation in all likelihood) you'll be able to get a better idea if the benefits outweigh the cost. Luckily the program is very flexible, so you don't have to rush to apply before then.

Is the MA workload manageable during your first year so far? Have you been told as to when would be the optimal time to start the program (i.e. first year, second year, etc.)?

Well, still no letter in the mail, and I live 45 mins from Philly, so here's to hoping I'm still in the running! :xf:

The work load is very manageable. Due dates are extremely flexible and you come to class when you can. I think the best option is to start during your first year since trying to fit in the program during your clinical years would be difficult. The MA is two years of class work and then a thesis project. The class work is designed to be taken in tandem with your first and second year medical school classes. The faculty is great because they really appreciate that the MD work takes priority over the MA work. I hope this helps, and do let me know if you have more questions! 🙂

i'm pretty sure they've made preliminary decisions on most applications. maybe some of us will be re-reviewed and get ii's. but the majoirty will be rejected come march.

hate that schools do that, btw. wish they wouldn't string people along if they know they won't be interviewing them.

Mmm... so it generally just stays "under review" until a rejection at the end of the season? What a pain. I guess that's a typical "silent rejection".

So I guess no one has received any bad news in the mail from temple then? Did people usually receive their waitlist notifications a few days after everyone else got the emails?

Judging by these posts, there doesn't appear to be a very strict timeline. People who interviewed in late September and late October are being notified in the same day. I think it depends on your interviewer and their schedule/ability to make the committee meetings.

Well then I guess my interviewer didn't get the chance to go. Hopefully when he does he has a lot of positive things to say about me!

How do you guys (current students, prospective students) think Temple compares to other medical schools both locally and nationally?
