2013-2014 Uniformed Services University of the Health Science Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got an interview invite today... anybody have any idea how filled up each branch is?
SDN users have stated earlier in this thread that each branch is currently full... meaning they've extended acceptances for all their available seats. They extend the same number of acceptances as they have seats (rather than more like most schools) so the wait-list has had considerable movement in past years.

Here is my timeline, some information for those anxiously waiting like I was.

Secondary submitted 7/17/13
Interviewed 10/24/13
Selected Navy
Received waitlist letter on 12/17/13 (Letter was dated 12/4/13)
Body Composition Test (12/6/13 and 1/8/14)- 8 pounds over the limit for my height the first time. Dropped 13 pounds for the second time.
Medical Waiver Process- Submitted additional info for waivers around 11/25/2013. Received a medically qualified status from DODMERB around 1/4/2014.
No phone calls 🙁. USUHS is my top choice, so I hope I get in off the waitlist.

I interviewed 11/14
Selected Army
Received a medically qualified status from DODMERB around 11/24
Haven't received any notifications regarding my status, via phone, email or post. So I'm also in limbo. Let's hang tough for now I suppose.

I received a call from Dr. Saguil yesterday saying that I was a very competitive applicant on the wait list and should receive a spot in March or April. Even though it was not an acceptance it is nice to know where I stand. Here's to hoping that my waiver is approved quickly.

Received a similar call from Dr. Saguil today. Interviewed 10/31 and was waitlisted 12/5. Selected Navy first with Army a close second.

Was told 1/3 of last year's class came off the waitlist. He didn't say anything about the Army or Air Force, but he did say that last year almost every single person got off the Navy waitlist.

Interviewed 10/31 and selected Air Force
Got the call today that I have been put on the wait-list too due to all of the seats being full, but that I should hopefully receive a spot once they open in the spring.

Best of luck!

Can current students let us know about the steps following admission? So after having given unconditional acceptance, in the coming months what needs to be done?

Do we need to do another physical exam? As in an "official exam" with a military physician? Also, I heard we're supposed to fill out the security clearance form again.

And what should we expect for the officer training? Is there a physical exam during that as well? And what kind of PT should we expect to do on a daily basis?

Thanks a lot.

I crossposted your question to the Facebook group. Here are the answers. Names are abbreviated for privacy:

TJP - DoDMERB physical is all you will need to commission. As far as another physical at training, there most likely will be a quick physical health assessment (PHA). This is usually just a quick review of your records where you report whether or not their are any changes in your medical record. Security paperwork I'm not sure but I would assume everything filled out for interview day should have been sufficient to run a secret clearance background check. From other officers I've talked to that have been through medical BOLC, the organized PT you will do on a daily basis is really easy. Most officers choose to do additional PT on their own time.

ES - After I received my unconditional acceptance, the only thing that I received after that were my travel orders to get to ODS. The unconditional acceptance is your golden ticket. Make sure to let go of other medical school acceptances by the AMCAS date (I think it's mid-May). You do have to fill out the security form again, but you'll get that paperwork when you get to USUHS. During officer training, you'll get shots, so make sure you bring your immunization records so you aren't getting multiple shots per day. They also draw your blood and do urinalysis testing, but that's it as far as health goes. At ODS we ran no more than 3 miles a day, and they alternate between strength/conditioning and running. We didn't do a ton of physical activity at ODS because we were really short on time the entire duration we were there. Look at the service-specific PT test standards, and aim to pass those. If you can do that then you'll be fine for ODS, and I imagine for BOLC and COT as well.

CLP - For Army ppl: Last summer, BOLC was condensed into a 3 week course and the only PT we did was the PT test if we passed. Expect to take the PT test within 2-3 days of getting there. Remediation and optional PT was available for about 30 minutes 3x per week, which mostly consisted of pushups, situps and very short runs. I assume this was because the time was limited. Now that they're going back to a 6 week course, they will probably add more. The only truly demanding part of BOLC was the 110 degree weather..we had a few people pass out from standing in the sun, not drinking water, etc. That said, everything else was cake. Try to get your uniform squared away before arriving to BOLC..this includes getting your boots a bit worn in. HTH

I asked - Does that mean both ACU and dress squared away before BOLC?

CLP - For BOLC we only needed our PTs and ACUs so I personally bought the Class Bs afterwards. But that could change for you guys. They should email you guys a packing list a month or so before you go.

RG - I agree with CLP --get as much of the packing list as possible prior to BOLC. There's a uniform shop and commissary where you can get everything that you forgot, but it's a really long (HOT) walk from the hotel (unless you befriend someone with a car, in which case you're golden). Try to break in your boots, since you will be wearing them all day, every day. I saw some nasty blisters while we were out in the field. As for security clearances, don't worry about that until you get to school. The security office will tell you if you need to submit it again, but you'll have plenty of time during orientation to get this squared away.

HH - For AF, we also alternated running and strength, but it was often canceled due to lightening nearby, so we really didn't get much exercise. Most people went to the gym in the evening. As far as uniforms, I didn't buy anything before going to COT except my boots and and it worked out fine.

I hope this helps to answer your question. Seems we just have to sit tight. I've started breaking boots in; not so much for BOLC, but because I'd like to join the USUHS group that rucks the Marine Corps Marathon.

After receiving the unconditional acceptance do we have to sign an intent to matriculate?

After receiving the unconditional acceptance do we have to sign an intent to matriculate?

I believe I returned a form to hold my spot in the class (no money was required). It's not binding however until much later on.

I had a couple forms included with my conditional acceptance asking if I wanted to hold my spot. Like johnnyscans said its free so if you didn't get one ask them for another copy

I sent the ones in the conditional back in. So I'm assuming we just withdraw from other schools and wait for our orders then.

Hey all, I'm actually applying in the 2014-2015 cycle, but I just had a few questions. First of all, I just wanted to say, congratulations to all of the people even considered for USUHS. I have incredible respect for this medical school and everything they stand for. USUHS has been my top choice ever since I knew about it. So here are my questions:
1. To those of you who applied and were waitlisted or unconditional accepted, or accepted, could you help me out and give me a brief academic bio with cGPA, sGPA, and MCAT scores? I unfortunately screwed up my freshman and sophomore year and chose the hardest major at my university (math) and my GPA suffered. I have a 3.48c GPA and a 3.31 sGPA, so I know that's kind of weak. I am relying on my MCAT scores, I have been studying very hard the past 3-4 months for my MCAT date on March 22. I think it is realistic, with the practice scores and progression I am making, to say that I will probably get from a 29-32 on the MCAT. However, my grades for the past 3 semesters (ever since I dropped math major) has been in a very upward trend, which Lt.Colonel Saguil said is a plus.
2. For those of you that applied for the army branch and got accepted or waitlisted, how many of you are men and how many of you are women? I know this question may seem kind of silly but I remember at the open house last year Lt. Colonel Saguil talked about the demographics of the matriculants of the army, which kind of scared me, being a male.
3. For those of you who received interviews, do they give you one date or a list of dates or a block of dates to choose from? I'm only asking this since I live over 700 miles away and my dad really wanted to take me to my interview and he wouldn't be able to do that if the interview were let's say on a Wednesday.

Oh I just thought of another question: Could someone give me a rough idea of the quantity of the physical exercises that the qualifying test holds? (i.e. pushups, pull-ups, sit-ups, running)

Thank you for the kind words, good luck in the upcoming cycle and this is my take on the whole application process,

1. Bottom line: One step a time. It's definitely possible with to get in as long as you do well on the MCAT so just focus on that until after you take it then primaries/secondaries/interviews afterwards. Personally I would stay the hell away from sdn until March 23rd unless you need MCAT advice. Everything else (trying to figure out your chances, what other people did, etc.) is a distraction and nothing good happens when you start playing mind games with yourself (in my opinion at least).
2. Not sure but USUHS has a demographic sheet on their website I remember seeing it somewhere.
3. USUHS sends you an email with the date of your scheduled interview I didn't request to change it so im not sure how that process works

Thanks! Good luck on your application cycle. Get everything done early and to the best of your ability.

1. 3.19 cGPA, 3.45 sGPA, 3.83 post-bacc GPA (all science, 53 credits, all pre-reqs). 11/11/10 MCAT. Extremely solid ECs, work experiences and LORs
2. Army was my top choice. I interviewed on Sept. 25th or 26th (the second interview day). I'm a dude. I was accepted on October 25th.
3. I was given one date. My dad and I were biking around Mt. Ranier and Mt. Hood and I had been out of cell service for 3 days. When I got service back I had my II in my email. Score!
4. Fitness tests are branch specific. Army has push-ups, sit-ups and a two mile run. Google "APFT". You'll have to take it at training and once per year from that point forward. I know that there is some organized PT throughout the year. Based on my observations most applicants/students seem to be pretty active and healthy.

I know quite a few people have replied to this but....
1. 3.3 undergrad, 3.8 SMP, 31 MCAT
3. All interviews are on Thursdays every week. So you can reschedule them, but it'd still be on a Thursday.

Here's everything you need to know: http://www.usuhs.mil/medschool/pdf/WhatYouNeedtoKnow.pdf

Class of 2016 profile:
GPA: 3.5
MCAT: 31.1
35% female
1 date for interview, can be rescheduled to a later date but not an earlier

I was accepted with a LizzyM [(gpa*10)+MCAT-1] of 70

Keep working on that GPA and good luck on the MCAT!

Interviewed 9/12/13 (the first interview day).
Accepted Navy on 10/16/13.
Stats: 3.7 c gpa, 3.6 s gap, 37MCAT.

You've probably heard this before, but I'll reinforce it: this info is anecdotal. What they're looking for is more complex than just stats, especially at USUHS. They want to know that you have the drive and capability to be a successful military physician.

Focus on doing well in school and on the MCAT. Then focus on writing your essay. Personally, I think the essay was the single biggest factor in my (and probably most other people's) admission. And it's also really important to submit your app as early as possible because of rolling admissions.

Wasn't the first day schools were allowed to give out acceptances on 10/15/13??

Would it help to say that I have been dedicated to volunteering at an elementary school for the past 3 years for over 250 hours?

Interviewed 12/12 and still waiting on a waitlist letter. Did they specify which tier you were on in the letter? I know we are able to find out but wasn't sure if this came along with the letter or at a later date.

My letter didn't specify, but when they called they told me what tier I was in.

Has anybody lived at or taken a look the Glen Haven apartments in Wheaton? I know these apartments are for military families, so I'm wondering if you think they are worth the BAH for the area? I won't be able to get out to DC with my wife to house hunt, so I'm just looking for some reviews of the place. Do a lot of USUHS families live there?

Of course. That would fall under non-medical volunteer work.

I was accepted Army and interviewed on 9-12 accepted 10-15. All of my info is on my MDapps.

There are more men at USUHS in general. It's not an Army thing. They just get more male applicants.

Was told 1/3 of last year's class came off the waitlist. He didn't say anything about the Army or Air Force, but he did say that last year almost every single person got off the Navy waitlist.

Yep! I interviewed this past Thursday. They said that last year everyone from the Army and Air Force waitlists was eventually offered an acceptance, and almost everyone from the Navy waitlist was offered an acceptance. Right now all branches are full because they can only have 171 people holding seats at a time, but the waitlist should move quickly!

Yeah. I was typing from my smartphone, which doesn't handle the text field on this forum well, and I missed that mostly because I was too frustrated to review what I typed. 10/16/13 was my acceptance date.

Hey all. I know it's early for a lot of you to be thinking about, but for those who are planners like me, I thought I'd at least throw the offer out there:
For those looking for housing when you get here, a lot of my classmates (4th years moving in May/June to our next station) are starting to look at renting out our houses, etc. This includes me (I have a house in Rockville, 4 bedroom, 3 full bath, $2000/mo, fenced in yard...), several friends renting out condos in Bethesda (I'll post those as well if there's interest once I get their quick blurbs, etc). Also, I know a couple realtors who have worked with USUHS and military people before both in buying homes/condos as well as finding good rental properties. If you want names/contact info for realtors or more info on that kind of stuff, send me a PM and I'll answer as soon as I can. Please be patient with me because I generally only check on here once a week, though the PM's at least send me alerts. If what I've mentioned doesn't sound interesting, or you are one of the majority that's still waiting/deciding, don't worry too much, this board will get busy in March/April with a lot more posts from my classmates with places to rent.

Best of luck to those still waiting to hear! Also, Dr. Saguil is an amazing guy.

disappointed today when i got my preinterview rejection 🙁

Good news, I was notified yesterday that my waiver was approved!
-Medically disqualified 10/31
-Interviewed 11/7
-Due to issues with my provider, waiver submitted 12/16
-Notified of status on wait list 12/21
-Waiver approved 1/30

This was the last major hurdle, now for that wait list to start moving.....

Dr. Saguil is great. A few questions: What is a pre-interview rejection, and what would make it likely to receive one of those? And, medicman79, if you don't mind, could I ask what condition got you initially medically disqualified?

A pre-interview rejection is a rejection without an interview offer. It will happen if the adcom thinks you wont be a good fit for the school based on the info in your primary and secondary.

I tore my posterior labrum in my right shoulder in Oct 2011 and had arthroscopic surgery to repair it in Mar 2012. The medical code given for my disqualification was D225.00 - History of any dislocation, subluxation, or instability of the shoulder. With my waiver I sent in the results of an exam performed by an orthopedist that essentially stated that I do not have any restrictions to movement or activities due to the injury.

Interviewed 11/21
Received Waitlist letter 02/03 (Letter dated 01/30)
Navy first choice, Army second

Waiting for the call from Saguil!

Current students: what is the attendance policy for lectures? I know that the lecture capture system is pretty good overall, but I'm wondering what happens when you find yourself with a professor whose teaching style doesn't mesh up with your learning style and you would rather watch the lectures at either a faster speed or with the ability to pause? I remember reading something about check-ins (since we are, after all, members of the military), but how does the system work?

I browsed through this thread, but was unable to find anything.

My host and his entire house did not go to class and just watched the lectures at home together at 1.5x speed and paused and rewinded as they pleased.

No but I'm guessing like most medical schools the only classes that are mandatory are labs and patient interactions

What are the "tiers" you are asking about when you call? Also did you just call the admissions office for this information? Thanks in advanced for help.

twinning is correct. Regular lectures are not mandatory. Labs, patient interaction and certain military lectures/events are mandatory. I think I attended only 1 non-mandatory lecture because it happened to be sandwiched between mandatory events.

They have a primary wait list and then I think a secondary and then the bottom third like most schools, except they usually get more movement. Dr. Saugil told me which one I was in when he called to tell me I was on the waitlist.
