2013-2014 University of Alabama Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone! First post on SDN. I interviewed earlier this month and was accepted yesterday. I genuinely think that my interview was what got me in because all my other stats were below UAB's average. If you guys have any questions about my scores or my interview feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to help anyone out!

Do you mind sharing your stats? And are you IS or OOS?

Haha Well I was referring to those specific types of questions. May not be a solid strategy for interview day as a whole though, but even so I'm not sure how heavily interview impressions were weighted (assuming you're not weird). So act natural and don't embellish, and you'll be good.

Submitted Secondary: 10/13/13
Interview Requested: 10/28/13
Interview Date: 11/14/13

IS Updated LizzyM score: 65. My MCAT score was really disappointing. I am pretty shocked that I got an interview, to be honest. Looks like I will be with you, TroyTrojan34070

2.) Briefly indicate how you would add diversity to our medical school class:

Trying to answer this part of secondary. Is this required? There is nothing diverse about me. Any suggestions? I'm stumped.🙁

I'm sure it is required and wouldn't reflect well for your application if you didn't answer it. I'm a non URM who grew up in pretty fortunate/privileged circumstances so I understand that it is easy to feel like you are not diverse, but there is a lot more to diversity than race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Do you have any experiences working with people that are different from you? If you have volunteered in with the elderly, low income people, children etc. or have traveled to another part of the country or world, then you have probably have diversity of experience and could write about that. Just think of some unique quality, experience or perspective that you have and turn that in to a story about how you could bring that diverse aspect to UAB.

Congratulations! I wasn't too excited with mine either, but apparently ours were both enough to warrant an interview, and that's what matters.

Just got accepted as an OOS applicant!=) Very happy!! I absolutely loved this schooll when I interviewed here.
Does anyone know if it is possible to establish in state residency while in medical school? It probably is very difficult if it is possible.

You cannot in Alabama

Has anyone had any luck with "remain under consideration for interview" status. Especially OOS applicants.

I submitted so long ago (the first week that the secondaries went out) and I haven't even gotten to that stage!! I've been "under review" this whole time. I think I need to call.

I am an OOS applicant that had that status for 2-3 weeks after which I got an interview invite. I think it is a good sign to have it!

Well, I initially thought that it was a good sign as well, however, I have been in that status for like a month. Don't know if I should be concerned or not seeing as the initial review was really quick.

I'm in the exact same situation. Let me know if you end up calling!

anyone know if UAB is receptive to letters of interest pre-interview? I'm OOS and have been sitting on "remain under consideration for interview" for probably a month and a half now

You and me both. Really wish I knew what the hold up is.

Question for the crowd: Did your secondary application have you AMCAS information filled in on the experience sections on the online form? Mine are all blank, and as I understand it, my AMCAS info should have imported into the form where I can further review and update it. I have tried emailing and calling admissions, but I haven't gotten any answers. I just need to know if I should reenter all of my AMCAS experiences.

I know my application is horrendously late, so please don't even address that. I was already late submitting, and then all of my secondaries arrived during a week with 5 tests!

Yes, they should have imported. I would call in hopes of avoiding tedious re-entry. Good luck!

Is the 'secondary in process' status for over 2 weeks at this point in the cycle probably normal?

Thanks, I will continue trying to call, but I think I will go ahead and reenter everything today so that I can submit it today. Good luck to you as well!

Mine said secondary in progress for well over 2 weeks and that was back in sept. No worries.

I was assigned the "Secondary Complete & Under Review" status 7 days ago and have just been updated to "Remain Under Consideration for Interview". I am an in-state applicant, so obviously this worries me.
I see above that some OOS applicants had this status as well, have any other in-state applicants gone through this? Is this a bad sign?

I'm OOS and have had the "Secondary Complete and Under Review" for over 2 months. I sent an email to the office and they said that there isn't a timeline... So not quite sure how their review process works, but I know many OOS students are in the same position!

I don't think it's a bad sign. A few of my friends and I are IS and we all had that status before getting an interview.

Yes I had this status for 3-4 weeks and was then invited for an interview. I'm also in-state...I don't think you have anything to worry about

Has anyone who interviewed the last few weeks in Oct. heard anything?

I interviewed on Oct 24 and haven't heard anything yet. I was expecting them to release some acceptances this past Friday since the 2012-2013 SDN UAB thread had some acceptances on Nov 15

I interviewed in mid/late October and I haven't heard anything. Hoping for good news soon 🙂

Congrats! I interviewed Thursday too, and I just got my acceptance email! It looks like a good day for 11/14ers. Which school did you go to for undergrad? I think I might remember you. Malissa, UA grad here.

Good lord that's a fast turnaround for an admissions decision! Congrats to both of you!

Does anyone know how often/what day of the week they send out acceptances? Or is it more of a whenever they feel like it kind of deal?

My status has been complete and under review for 2 and a half months now 🙁 This is not looking good. (OOS applicant)

Was under review for over 2 months. Status change to: remain under consideration for interview. I'm OOS.. This is obviously better than a rejection, but have any OOS students had success with this status?

I'm pretty sure you have to get this status change in order to be invited for an interview, so I would take it as a good sign

I saw the two acceptances yesterday from Nov. interviews. Does anyone know of late October interviewers that have heard anything? I guess just more waiting. I just hope it's not a long wait, but I know it could be until March.

Just received an Interview Invite! Absolutely elated!
However, the only option I was given by the interview scheduler was January 16...
I was under the impression that most people were able to choose between 2 or more dates, and that their options typically were not so far separated from the date of their interview invite. Has anyone else had to schedule their interview 2 months ahead of time? I'm wondering if this is because of the holidays or if they found some reason to lump me in with the reapplicant interviews. Any opinions?

Thank you for the reassurances, your replies greatly assuaged my anxiety over the weekend.
