So does UCLA really not start deciding interviews dates until October?

I have an interview at USC on Nov. 1st, and I want to send an "in the area" email, but idk if I should wait until October. Would that be too short notice?

Yep, UCLA is pretty late as far as interviews go. They might as well go non-rolling. They don't even give out acceptances until March if I remember from the last few class threads I've read.

It's early. I would wait till mid-ish September to send in the area email. Remember some schools may or may not find the "in area" emails to be a good thing. JMO.

Truth.

Roll Tide Roll!

Ok. Thanks guys!

I don't think telling UCLA you're interviewing at USC is the best idea 😉

So I'm almost done with my secondary but I have a question.

Once of the questions says: List major paid work experience during (or since) college. Give dates, description, approximate hours worked (list the most recent first)

I'm assuming its asking for literally a list like you would have on your resume but am I correct on that assumption?

Yup yup.

Can someone help me with this question please, not sure whether to answer yes or no...

"Has there been a gap greater than one year between achieving your baccalaureate degree, and/or consecutive degrees before applying to medical school? (yes or no). If yes, please explain."

I graduated from college September 2009, started grad school August 2010 and graduated August 2012, and now applying...

I'm leaning towards no.

I graduated college in May 2012, and I said no.

Drew/UCLA student here!

Congratulations to everyone getting secondaries and interviews. So excited to have some of you join our Geffen family and our Drew family. 🙂

If you have any questions, feel free to PM!

Got a call from an unknown LA number today and my heart momentarily stopped. Stupid sales calls.

I don't think UCLA makes phone calls, well at least last year and at least for the traditional David Geffen program.

Huh, in last years thread the first few interviews that went out were via phone call (end of page 4/beginning of page 5 on last years thread).

It is possible that this may be the case with a smaller program at ucla but applicants for David Geffen find out via email and checking the online portal for interviews and acceptances. Again there could be super special cases 😉

I don't know about Geffen, but Drew does interview invites through phone calls.

Yeah that doesn't surprise me since there are a much smaller # of II for Drew. Well I guess for all you Drew applicants a phone is a good thing. Good luck!

Yes regular Geffen program occasionally calls. But it is mainly used to ask if you would be available for an interview within the next few days because they had a cancel or open spot. It is mainly only done if you are local. I had a few local friends get calls from Ian for a next day or next 2 day interviews. Bottom line is yes, DGSOM can call you for an interview before your online page says you got one, especially if you are local (in the greater LA area).

Juan Solo!

It seems like UCLA operates basically a non-rolling cycle right? Do you think taking 2 weeks to finish my secondary would be detrimental to me? I had some personal issues come up that slowed me down :/

Also, since the character count was kinda low for the secondary questions I focused more on what the experience meant for me as a future doctor rather than just explain the details of the experience as I did in the primary app - is this what's expected?

I am huge supporter of taking a little more time with your secondary to make it better despite it being submitted later, especially if this is a school that you are really interested into. However some people may have the opposite opinion. I can tell you that I didn't submit mine till the early 20's of September, but then again that was me.

In terms of the prompts I think the most important thing is to answer it. What I mean by that is to stick somewhat close to what it is asking. I think how you want to reflect on it is up to, if you have space.

Interesting, I will definitely remember this for next time.

Complete 09/02
Secondary 09/03

3.6 GPA, 35 MCAT

Do they screen for secondaries or is it automated? This is for Geffen, btw.
They screen.

Would it be weird to contact them on my part? I was complete 8/9. Is anyone else in the same boat?

Yeah, I'm in a similar boat here. I was verified around mid July and am still waiting for a secondary. If it was any other school, I'd begin to worry but I know how unpredictable and erratic Geffen can be with dishing out secondaries. Its just a little frustrating, because as an OOSer, I feel like Geffen is by best shot at a UC.

And Supermintyfresh, are you IS?

This is weird supermintyfresh... we received a secondary on the same day and have exactly the same stats... are you also wearing a purple shirt right now?????

Done! Finished the secondary. I was sitting there trying to brainstorm about the last essay when I realized that they explicitly said you don't have to answer all questions :smack:

No, I don't have a purple shirt unfortunately! 😀

I can't even submit my secondary now... get this error:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e14'

The transaction log for database 'ucla_admissions' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases

/applications/_ScriptLibrary/Recordset.ASP, line 311

Will try email/calling them tomorrow.

Edit: I'm OOS btw. Also the error seems to be gone 😀

I had that same error when I was submitting back in Aug. Their website isn't the most up to date.

Good luck!

Just got a PRIME secondary.

Was verified with AMCAS on 8/15 after submitting on 7/2

Yeah...I just called today. 34 MCAT 3.75 sGPA 3.79 cGPA incoming senior biochemistry major at ucla. I got verified on 8/5, still no news though. They said my app is still under review. I have friends with lower overall stats that got secondaries almost a month ago, so it's super weird. Didn't hear back from drew program or ucr either. Feels weird that I'm still waiting on my alma mater, but not much we can do at this point lol.

Yeah I decided I would contact them as well. Retook my mcat last month and just got my scores so I figured I would use that as an excuse to email the office in the offchance that they were waiting on it before making a decision. Pretty much said in the most polite way possible, "Hey look, I got a better score, now give me a secondary"

Highly doubt it will work but it's worth a shot.

Alright so it's September and I am sure a lot of you posters/ and lurkers, have questions so I am going to open it up for anyone who has questions about David Geffen. Ask away!

p.s. Glad to hear more people are getting secondaries (definitely more will be given out).

Sounds like Juan Solo is pretty much the go-to already, but I'm a MSIII in the Geffen program on a pretty chill rotation right now so hit me up with questions 🙂

I have one- Why is the current 3rd year class so awesome?

Also, I'd like to point out that UCLA has recently adopted a socialist economic system in which those students who receive the full ride scholarships must evenly divide their money among those upperclassmen who were not here when the scholarships were implemented. It's only fair.
