2013-2014 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

What are people's thoughts on using something from high school? I know that it seems frowned upon to talk about things before college but for the "unique leadership" one I would like to talk about something I did all 4 years in high school and I feel is a more unique than what I've done in college. . Especially since it's worded as if we need to pick the MOST UNIQUE activity...

Starlight, good question. I am no expert, but I really would not do this if I were you. But, I don't know what it is. If you want to PM me for more detailed info, feel free. Without knowing what it is, I would say pick something from college unless you continued that activity after leaving high school.

Best,
C

There technically is not time line restriction for this activity but I think the ADCOMs are definitely looking for something more recent. Proceed with caution.

Teaching/tutor is considered academic.

As someone who teaches at a college, I asked GWU if non-academic meant I couldn't talk about teaching and they actually encouraged me to write about it. I think I will email UCLA and let you guys know.

It is always best to clarify with that specific school.

The only school I am still waiting on....c'mon Geffen!

I'm pre-writing the secondary for UCLA (early july primary submission—haven't been verified yet), so I was wondering if the 800 character count includes spaces or not? Thanks!

me too...i turned mine in on june 10th like as early as possible, and I still have not received it.

Yeah I am as well. But the source of my problem may stem from the fact that they haven't invited me to fill one out yet.

Well I didn't submit it that early but I wouldn't worry too much. I definitely wouldnt take it as a bad sign that just because you submitted on day one, you're not going to get a secondary if you haven't gotten one with the first batch. Geffen works in strange ways, it's in your best interest to stay patient.

This, especially for David Geffen.

Unfortunate question: could someone please copy/paste the "Disadvantaged Information" section from the application?

I accidently submitted w/o completing the whole form and was told to email the information but I no longer have access to the questions :/

That would be really hard lol. The form is extensive and has tons of separate blanks (probably over 30 of them). If you PM me your email address tomorrow, I can take screenshots for you and send them.

Best,
C

When they say they will "request" letters, does this apply even if AMCAS has already sent it in to them? Im using AMCAS and my letters have been sent to ucla.

You are good. It just means that they will request your LORs if they dont already have them. However, they probably already do. Looks like you move onto the next phase of the process. 👍

So I know we got the 4- 6 weeks for a secondary email once our primary was verified..but what's been the going timeframe for a secondary from la? A week or so? I got one right away from Davis so I'm a little confused about screening now and whether its just numbers.

Geffen tends to send secondaries out in batches. As previously noted in this thread and last year's, they have a pretty unpredictable way in which they hand them out in terms of time frame. While I'm sure Geffen does have certain standards for numbers, as would any other school, they definitely look more into the applicant as a whole.

Thank you for the information! Its so hard to tell what adcoms are thinking that any bit of insight is helpful. I guess though, if schools let us into their minds/what they're looking for in a candidate, that wouldn't exactly make sense either

I got the primary verification email from LA like 5 days ago. Since then I've been checking my email non-stop - it feels like it's been ages 🙁

Pretty much this. ^

I wonder how long it'll be until this year's UCLA thread troll shows up to brag about his interview invite... :naughty:

Oh mahhhh gauche! II today! The secondary was a beast doe

Congrats on the II. Mind sharing your stats and are you in state? Good luck!

Thanks man! 28 mcat, 3.9 gpa, URM with a few connections to the school. IS. 🙂 I'm still in shock!!

It's in very poor taste to celebrate a👎 element(s) that one cannot control. Props for the interview invite though.

Seriously?
It isn't good taste?!
I don't think it's good taste to rain on people's parade.
Jealousy is a color that doesn't suit anyone; including you!

With that said... I wish u and everyone else good luck into getting into med school! 🙂

Not sure how it came off jealous at all, but I guess people interpret things as the wish, not as they should. (FTR, I have 2 interviews, so no jealously from this guy) And I gave prop, so nah, not raining on anyone's parade. Anyone who has been through the struggle on the real wouldn't glorify it. My grandfather immigrated from Mexico, and taught my family that you earn the things you want in life - anything else is a handout. I don't know about you, but I would rather be commended on my accomplishments, and not praised because of my ethnicity, nor the color of my skin.

Your "grandfather is from Mexico?"
Let me take a wild guess... You said you were URM.
Get off the high horse! We are minorities and we are proud to have representation in the medical field. Being URM presents many challenges growing up and so yes "I'm celebrating the thing that brought me a few struggles in my life." Ethnicity, race, color of my skin...

I guarantee 100% you mentioned your "ethnicity" on your applications and tried to portray how your URM.
So excuse me if I'm happy that once and awhile me being URM gives me an upperhand rather than the disadvantages being both Latino and African American are sometimes associated with.

Good to hear that you got two interviews...

Actually, I didn't. I have other experiences and challenges more reIated to my influences for a career in medicine. I identified as Caucasian, because its a 25/75 split for me. So don't play guessing games about my application, because I 100% guarantee you will lose every time.

Also, I never quoted your comment, so I am not sure what you are excusing yourself for.

I don't ride horses, only ponies.

Congrats to those who got interviews!

Thanks for the props bro but I don't see it in poor taste to celebrate my background.
Young, Black and Proud. URM pride bro.

Quite frankly, I don't believe you at all. What, you created a new account just to brag about your UCLA interview? Before any other candidate (among SDN'ers) has received word? 🙄

Let's not feed the troll

I feel ya brah. Being URM is a hard knock life. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's not ashamed to represent. props 👍

I'm not saying not to celebrate your heritage. I'm saying that "URM ftw" is pretty tasteless. I'm 25% Hispanic, but I'm not using it as a crutch to get into medical school because I don't think I need to, and it's no ones business what my ethnicity is because it has no bearing on the impact I can make in society as a physician.
