2013-2014 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Quite frankly, I don't believe you at all. What, you created a new account just to brag about your UCLA interview? Before any other candidate (among SDN'ers) has received word? 🙄

Let's not feed the troll

Where are ppl reading "interview?"
It says secondary!
That is all
Continue on with what you were doing!

Not to respond.... but I want to point out that this is an unfounded assumption. This is the internet

I'm not saying not to celebrate your heritage. I'm saying that "URM ftw" is pretty tasteless. I'm 25% Hispanic, but I'm not using it as a crutch to get into medical school because I don't think I need to, and it's no ones business what my ethnicity is because it has no bearing on the impact I can make in society as a physician.

One of the reasons URM get the slight advantage is because of the impact that we can make on certain societies.
It's unfortunate but it's true. It's not a secret that some patients feel more comfortable with people they can identify with and vice versa. Like dissolves like. Lol

I'm not ranting now. I know your intentions are good.
However my Latino grandparents have went through a plethora of physicians and they feel most comfortable and willing to deal with the Hispanic doctors. There are countless studies done showing how the presence of URM physicians in specific societies increases the willingness of patients to seek healthcare. Especially for those who don't speak English well or at all.

I hate to join in on this but there is no way you got an interview to Geffen this early. Not because of race or stats or anything else, but because they simply don't send out interviews this early. If you look at past years threads no interviews have gone out before September. That, plus the fact that UCLA secondaries were sent out over a week later this year than past years makes me very dubious that any interview invitations were sent out already.

Look at the UCLA students who post in this thread... They all preach having patience here cause Geffen does everything SLOW.

Dude seriously?

Spoken like a troll! I went on a rant for the wrong reasons thinking II meant secondaries and thinking you were telling the truth!
U should go back and hide back in that hole in the groung you crawled out of!

Well I'm 100% black bro. I dont mind using it as a crutch because my URM background has had an impact on my journey!

A journey which obviously imparted honesty unto your wealth of values.

Have any thoughts on that one?

I'm pretty sure even saying URM won't make a difference if you had everything handed to you. In the other hand, if you grew up below the poverty line, first-generation college student, lived in a minority community, raised in a non-english speaking household and still managed to to graduate college with a competitive GPA and MCAT that will be impressive to adcoms. They care about the distance traveled not just self-claimed status such as URM. Mileage may very with every URM.

Let's all stop comparing/judging every person that receives a II, we don't know anything besides GPA/MCAT.

Even having all those qualities (I am literally everything you mentioned, but with a 27 MCAT) won't always get you secondaries... 🙁

This was my dream school but I didn't even get a secondary 🙁 so for those who did hear from them, be grateful

Yes, very well said. At a certain point, ADCOMS can tell who is trying to cash in on a gravy train and who genuinely has gone the distance to persevere.

Also, very well said. People should demonstrate their gratitude, not boast pride.

Were you rejected pre secondary? I think UCLA usually waits a while before they reject pre secondary. My last app, I didn't get rejected til January. So you might still have a chance.

Also, there's still UCLA/Drew which tends to be a bit more lenient on who they give secondaries/II to. But they have a very specific mission so that's why that tends to happen and people that would be a good fit for Drew may not be for Geffen and vice versa, or be a good fit for both.

Basically, all hope is not lost, just got to wait.

All I heard from Geffen is that they received my primary on 8/05 and same for UCLA PRIME. I was also interested in Davis, but also only got an email saying that they received my primary 🙁

UCLA Drew, I did hear from them, but they only accept 24 students from what I've read, and to be honest I dont know how I can compete with all you wonderful applicants with a 6 in verbal (11,6,10)

Let's try and keep the conversation related to UCLA SOM. Congrats if II are already going out. However, this is not the thread to discuss other matters. gnome what imma sayin?

Seems like we're back on track now, oh great leader of the allied forces(? I know nothing about Star Wars) and I'm sorry for derailing the thread.

Wat? How is that possible? You need to go watch Episodes IV-VI right now and be informed.

Yes, Episodes IV-VI, only. 😏

and, to put the convo back on topic, I hope UCLA shows me love this year. 😀

Thank you! Hope the school shows you love too.
This thread was getting out of hand!

Seemed like a klan rally for a second thanks to a few people.

Somebody here isn't a fan of TPB. Shake my head indeed.

Hahaha, wow this thread took an interesting turn in the past 48 hours.

I looked through the thread but couldn't find an answer. How long did it take just to receive a verification email about your primary app? My primary app was verified on 8/10 and I haven't heard anything from ucla in terms of them even receiving/beginning to review my app whereas I've already been screened and received a secondary from ucsd (3 days ago) and ucsf (6 days ago). I just want know if this timeline is fairly normal with ucla and not something I should be concerned about

I didn't get the primary received email until 20 days after I was verified, and then I got a secondary invite another 5 days after that. It's a long haul hang in there!

Geffen is known to take a little bit longer than other UC's and other school's in general. Just be patient and try not to compare it to other schools, it will just make you go crazy.

Great. Thanks for the quick replies. I was just curious since it was the only one that hadn't acknowledged that they had received my app. Lol I have plenty secondaries to finish to keep me busy in the meantime.

11 days later, and I finally submitted. Really disappointed in myself though because I realized I didn't have to write a single new essay.. just had to condense it down in size 🙁 Oh well, still within that 2 week mark! That's what I get for putting my secondaries off since I am completely burnt out

You're fine. It's still early. I dont think I completed my secondary for Geffen till the end of September.

Has anyone received a secondary/application complete email or status update? I submitted my secondary on 8/6 and am curious if I should be looking out for a complete email or just an interview invite (or rejection). Thanks!

Thanks for your input! 🙂 I am sure it won't hurt my application... I just feel like it could have helped if I had turned it in right away haha

I've been sifting through this thread for a bit now and the general forum, so I guess I'll just go ahead an ask. There's no separate thread this year for UCLA PRIME and/or DREW?

I regret not pre-writing these secondaries (I didn't think I would even get one for UCLA, let alone the other programs, LOL)

Yay just got the secondary! I thought they had screened me out. I guess not.

I haven't seen one. Do you have the secondary questions? I haven't been verified yet, but I'm trying to prewrite.

As someone who teaches at a college, I asked GWU if non-academic meant I couldn't talk about teaching and they actually encouraged me to write about it. I think I will email UCLA and let you guys know.

did anyone ever figure out the answer to this?

Usually someone makes those threads that isn't a mod. I was thinking about making a thread, but I'm still waiting for verification.

Quick question regarding the major paid work experience...I'm going to be a TA in the fall (my glide year). Even though the position won't start until after I've submitted my secondary, I know this is a sure thing that won't fall through. Should I list it for the major paid work experience since I can pretty accurately estimate the hours and dates the position will require? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
