2013-2014 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been complete since 10/21 and have not had any news. Anyone else in the same situation?
I've been complete since 08/26 and have not heart a peep. Definitely starting to lose hope. I have heard back from just about everyone else but not from UCLA which is my alma mater and amongst my top choices.

Has anyone been put on hold or rejected as of yet?

Based on last year's thread and my experience the year before, expect not to here anything regarding rejection until January.

I have been reading something about letter of intents/update letters on this thread. Can someone elaborate on what this is and when it would be appropriate to send to this school? I am from Canada and we do not have this here...

*looks at MDApps profile*

I really regret pouting on the Vandy forums about getting a W/L there, and that's with my cycle, which doesn't even compare to yours. I suggest you take a step back and get some perspective. There are so many applicants here who *really* have a reason to worry... and you... don't. I mean, worst case is you "settle" for Harvard.

Does anyone know when PRIME interview invites start coming out?

They started inviting people at the end of November and will be inviting until mid December-ish. They have a few interview dates set aside in January and February only

Maybe try having some empathy?

Since you probably don't see the two of them interacting a lot on SDN, you interpreted that as more of a heartless comment, rather than a light-hearted jab 😛. Not going to speak on Pyrrion's behalf, but... just look at their MDApps 😀

I edited my post right after you quoted my admittedly flippant reply. I've met on the forums who are having a truly poor cycle and are carrying on like champs. Like I said, I was pouting on the forums over the most miniscle problems when I should not have at all. It was not the right kind of behavior at all. I just feel like we all need to remember to be thankful for what we have.

I find little reason to sympathize with people who are pouting over the tiniest thing when there are people I've met on the forums who are having a truly poor cycle and are carrying on like champs. To be fair also, having interviews from Harvard and Yale and Hopkins and Penn and Columbia doesn't necessarily equate to them to being someone's top choices. Being from SoCal, I'm sure JediOchoa also has some thoughts about staying in California for med school and being close to his family.

Haha your post on the Vandy thread was fine I thought. You wrote about your experience interviewing there in an honest manner, and I don't think there was anything wrong with that.

I responded to someone who asked if their was anybody else in the same situation as they were in. I happen to be in the same situation. I am not complaining about my cycle at all. I can understand someone being annoyed if I started my own thread on the matter but I responded to someone who asked a question. And yea Geffen is one of my top choices for obvious reasons.

I haven't heard anything either, complete in August. Also my top choice : (

JediOchoa and I have met at an interview before. 🙂 (Although we don't remember each other lol). And isn't this my first time defending him? Plus, it was just a general statement I was making.

It's just sounds arrogant bro. Some people would kill for your stats/cycle. Just take a step back and be grateful #thanksgiving #37

It's also my top choice, complete since August also. Also sent in an update/letter of interest a few weeks ago. Still nothing but silence 🙁

It seems like UCLA is a lot of people's top choice. Please love me UCLA Geffen, Drew UCLA, and/or UCLA PRIME.

In the odd chance that someone has some inside information, does each UC have a set of parameters they use to determine who they will send secondaries to? For example, sending auto invites to everyone above a certain GPA/MCAT or matching a certain residency status to help expedite the process before combing over the remaining primaries.

I just ask because while I was definitely late coming into this cycle, I received my secondary invite from UCSF almost immediately following verification in November (faster that I think the admission staff would have been able to review it). The secondary invite from UCSD came at a more expected time a few weeks after, while the UCLA invite I am still waiting on. The speed with which I heard back from UCSF (it was literally 2hours after my AMCAS email) made me suspect that something in my application may have triggered some sort of auto invite status.

I realise the rate of secondary invites means diddly in terms of acceptance chances, but I was curious to hear if anyone else had similar experience with the UCs.

Cheers,
Nenet

I received all my UC secondaries immediately except for UCSD and UCLA. I got the UCSD secondary ~2.5 weeks later, haven't received one from UCLA at all and its been 4 months.

Are you in-state or a graduate of a California university by any chance?

Ditto, maybe UCSD and UCLA are just picky.

I have not received a UCLA secondary either. LORs received 8/5. IS, 3.8/32. Is there still hope at this point?

Everyone try and chill. Please don't get angry at someone who is having a successful application cycle and likewise try and be considerate when posting on this thread. We can all be friends. Let's try and keep the post and questions relative to that about ucla application cycle and the ucla program itself.

🙂

UCSD was my top choice, until they waitlisted me. Now I'm all for UCLA, ifin they decide to accept me :xf:

  • UCD & UCI: AMCAS received and secondary invite emails at the same time.
  • UCLA: 5 days & UCSD: 8 days between AMCAS received and secondary invite
  • UCSF: 49 days after AMCAS, rejection no secondary
  • UCR: They never sent an AMCAS received email, and i dont remember the interval

What exactly do you say in a letter of interest?

I updated them with my fall grades and some new activities for the update part. For the letter of interest part, I first talked about the parts of the school that I really liked and talked about how I would be a good fit for the school. Then I also then mentioned some personal reasons for why the school is my top pick.

I see that you already got in to ucsd... First of all congrats! Secondly what makes you want to go to UCLA more than SD?

Well, SD and LA are my top 2 picks and it's close, but I think I'd rather go to LA mainly cause my wife and I have lived in SD almost our entire lives, and we think a change of scenery could be nice. Also, I think it'd be kind of fun to go to a big PAC 12 school (big college football fan). Not to mention the prospect of getting a Geffen scholarship ha ha.

But that's pretty much it. Like I said, it's pretty close between the 2, so I'm stoked on my UCSD acceptance, but am still hoping for the chance to interview at LA and at least check out the school more.

I know no rejections have been sent out, and no news probably means a rejection is coming in January. Just wondering, has anyone tried calling admissions to ask if their app has been reviewed yet?
