2013-2014 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
only 121 students enrolled? are you sure about that ,because all the other sites i've been looking at show UCLA to enroll around 160-200.
121 normal MD, the other 40+ come from Drew and PRIME (used to include UCR program too)

is the general consensus that ucla is essentially non-rolling admissions? (since they interview until march and also release acceptance news in march)
then is there any real advantage to interviewing early here?
Do they send out rejections before march though?

thanks for the reply, but i don't really feel the question was answered. i understand that everyone has a fair chance, but is there any fair-er chance if you interview earlier?

First of all, you don't know when they will schedule your interview. Some friends of mine received an II before me but were scheduled for an interview after me. From what we were told during our interview, I think that everyone has the same chance to get in. They will release first acceptances late Feb/ early March, basically at the end of the interview season, and there is very high chance that you will get your interview in Feb.

does anyone know when are the next available interview dates? aka how late is UCLA in their interview cycle.

Nobody can really answer this since they don't list available dates when they assign you. For all we know, they could be filled for February dates but still have open days in January. That said, the latest I know (personally) of someone interviewing is late January.

Any MD/PhD applicants here? Any news? I've been complete for a long, long time but haven't heard back at all.
Same. Their last interview date is in a month according to the calendar on the physician scientist forum, so I'm expecting a rejection at this point.

same! what in the world?? i had given up on this school months ago. I think UCLA is non-rolling (?) so we still have an ok chance at getting an interview

Lol AMCAS verified late July and just got a secondary this week too! Thought I was getting a rejection but I guess not. There's still some hope left people!

When I was there for the interview in the beginning of Dec, we all got a feeling that it was still early for their cycle, seems like they started to interview late Oct/ early Nov. One of the MMI instructors mentioned that they kind of just getting into full swing and will be interviewing until mid March. Also, they interview only 16 people per date, so it takes longer.

For MD/PhDer's: I submitted my secondary 10/20 and got an II 12/3. The invite was for 1/16 but I couldn't make it so it's on 2/13 which is their last date for the cycle.

Thanks for the info. Hoping to hear something soon.

I bet they'll send another batch of invites in January for February. Hope you hear something too!

Well the ms1's and ms2's are now on vacation. So if anyone has any questions then feel free to ask!

Why hasn't Geffen given me an interview yet 🙁

Jk I turned in my secondary on second to last day I could, so I've got some waiting ahead of me.

So post-interview, any tips to maximize chances for acceptance?

Send headshots with glitter and cookies.

Or maybe letters of continued interest should you get waitlisted.

Yeah I believe the current class size is 179.
Depends how you calculate it... about 140 regular Geffen folks plus another ~20 Drew/Prime and now riverside is separate but I think there used to be like 30 of them each year.

PS- where the trolls at?? This thread has been notably tame compared to the last few years.

PSS- I just got accepted.

PSSS- Disregard that I'm a current student. I seriously just got accepted.

Word, that number is just what I remember from this years orientation (it included all students in all programs).

And in regards to the trolls, I predict that they will arrive on Christmas morning. 🙂

Looking forward to my interview next month!!!

Can anyone talk to me about the curriculum here? I can't seem to find a schematic on the UCLA website. Does one exist?

Same. Complete late August and I haven't heard anything. @Reckoner is probably right in that we should expect rejections at this point. 🙁

Block 1- Intro/random immunology and genetics
Block 2- Cardo/renal/resp
Block 3- GI/repro/endocrine
Block 4- Musculoskeletal
Block 5- Neuro
Block 6- Micro/heme/onc
Block 7- GI/repro/endocrine
Block 8- Psych
Block 9- Cardio/renal/resp

2 hours of lecture per day, afternoon labs 3 days per week, and PBL on Monday and Friday mornings. That's all there is to it.
And ~6weeks study time for Step 1. 3rd and 4th year are probably the same as all other schools, although the word on the street is that our 4th year has waaaaay more elective time. Hellz yea. Our curriculum's legit, trust me.

So there would be 2 hrs of lecture plus PBL on Mondays and Fridays? How long does PBL go for approx?

Thanks for your replies throughout the UCLA threads!

Mondays and Fridays are like this: 8-10 is PBL, 10-12 is (optional) lecture, 12-?? whatever the f you want.

So how coming is it to hear about post-interview decisions during January?

I meant how common is it to hear back post-interview during January. I heard that most decisions come out after March but some trickle in January. Is this true?

Yeah as a general rule for the Geffen program applicants don't hear an acceptance decision till March. If you are not yet accepted then you will have to wait a bit longer.

I personally haven't meet anyone in my class that was accepted any earlier than March.

Would anyone with MSASR post post-interview acceptance rate for Geffen? Thanks!
