2013-2014 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

Any MD/PhD applicants mind sharing when they have their interview date and when they got an interview invite? I've been complete since September and I was wondering if they are still giving out interview invites or if the silence is a rejection.

+1... Would love to find out if there are invites to be sent...

Yeah I believe the current class size is 179.

I second what Juan Solo mentions. The class of 2017 is 179 due to the fact that UC Riverside has their own medical school now.

That includes the drew and prime students though, correct?

@Ace-Co-A I submitted my secondary on 10/20 and got an II on 12/3. The invite was for 1/16 but I couldn't make it so it's on 2/13, their last date for the cycle. It seems like they'll send out more invites for February in early January but I don't really know.

Can anyone confirm that UCLA is receptive to pre-interview updates? I think Juan Solo mentioned that they are, but I just want to double check before sending mine in.

Thanks,
Bill

Does anyone who has scheduled for an interview know how the scheduling works? From my II it looks like you choose the days of the week you are available, and which dates you are NOT available. After that do they give you a few dates to choose one or do they schedule you for a specific date? Also, how accommodating is UCLA in terms of scheduling for an interview if an applicant will be in L.A for other interviews( if from northern california 6 hours away) in a 2 week span?
thanks

Usually once you give your availability then the admissions office sends you one date (your interview date) with a time.

In terms of in the "area" interview dates then you are better off calling and speaking to someone in person so that they can see what's available around that time frame.

Finally received an II from UCLA after pretty much giving up on this school! Does anyone know how long it usually takes for them to assign a date?

Judging by last year's thread @BurberryDoc is right, but I wanted to specify that they should go out until late February. Here's to hoping! 😛

Oh no, that is entirely what I meant - UCLA will continue to give II's through the month of february, and they also conclude their interview season by the at some point in the month of february.

I got my date within an hour... but I don't know if thats common or not.

How's it going with this? I'll take you out for a beer next year in thanks, obviously....

Son, if you think a medical school acceptance is worth anything less than a bottle of Lagavulin 21 year and a firm handshake, you are sorrily mistaken.

What if Juan doesn't like scotch though?

He goes to UCLA SOM. Of course he likes scotch.

This question is directed for Juan Solo or to anyone that feels comfortable answering it:

Once accepted, how do you believe Geffen scholars are selected? (MCAT, GPA, Activities, Personal Statement, Amount of schools accepted to, How bad they want you?)

Other than the MMI, are there any additional "exercises" for the PRIME interview?

Don't think so... at least none that were described in that e-mail.

I'm going to do some extra research of my own on MMIs etc, but that's me. 😉

Good luck!!

The thing is last year was the first year that DGSOM selected Geffen scholars. Additionally they didn't even know about the scholarship money till maybe December. When I interviewed early in the cycle they didn't even know about the scholarship. Long story short the selection process was later on in the cycle. Many people selected for the Geffen scholarship already had multiple acceptance (and probably other scholarships at other schools). In the end some people already made commitments to other places and such so our class only has maybe 10 scholars, all of which are nice and well accomplished individuals in a merit sense.

Hey guys! Does anyone remember the name of one of the medical student interviewers? I interviewed October 17th if that helps at all. Thank you so much if anyone can help 🙂

Is everyone not invited to interview for prime placed on the waitlist or are there rejections too?

Just got waitlisted. Not sure if anyone will cancel their interview tbh. Most likely a rejection, huh? 🙁

Haha likewise. People don't blindly apply to the programs unless they really want to do it 🙁. I'm prob on the bottom rung for getting an II anyway

Don't say that, UCLA PRIME has like a crazy screening process so while we haven't fully made the cut, we're not out of the running yet. People decline interviews all the time, even to great programs like UCLA PRIME. Here's to hoping someone (or multiple people) recognizes this and gives us a shot at PRIME. :luck::xf::luck:

In the meantime, I'm gonna be extra special awesome at my upcoming Drew interview in the off chance its my only shot at UCLA.

@Jennyfishy Don't think like that! Keep your fingers crossed! You just never know. We got this, guys!! :luck:

@SilentSoldier Thank you for the boost of confidence. I'm sure UCLA PRIME is many of our top choices, it sure is mine! All of you are amazing applicants, so I hope the waitlists moves!

Has anyone tried to change their interview date after getting assigned? I am scheduled for 2/13 but will be in the area for USC on 2/5... Wondering if they would be receptive to an "in the area" email for potential change.

The interview confirmation letter says, "Anticipate spending the majority of your day at UCLA. We do not reschedule appointments. However, in case of an emergency, please notify the Office of Admissions at (310)825-9145."

Hmmmm, I don't know if being in the area is considered an emergency. Can you change the USC date?

Lol, I'm just trying to be realistic about myself and have already accepted the fact that I am prob going to end up OOS. If any Admissions Committee wants to entertain me and challenge that possibility, I'd be more than surprised + happy to though  Good luck to you too though 😀 :luck:

Staying in state is tough for cali people... You've got an acceptance somewhere though so be stoked.

nervous for my interview here coming up soon, any tips anyone?
dont be nervous

(just know your motivations for wanting to be a doctor and make sure to show that through your experiences/examples rather than just tell your interviewer)

Don't be nervous! DGSOM is a school not just with a big name but also with a big heart! Everyone is super nice, welcoming and happy.People that conduct MMI and faculty are very nice and make the whole experience enjoyable.
As somebody said on this thread earlier, just do soul searching why you want to be a doctor and just be yourself!
Good luck!
