2013-2014 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've read through the last few pages and I'm a little bit confused on update letters. So post-interview they are definitely ok, but what about pre-interview? If the update isn't THAT big of an update will it be detrimental to us? Is it useless either way because they're almost done handing out interviews? So many questions...

A friend from school said he wrote a letter of interest, with no notable updates, and then received an II the next day. He's not sure if they were directly related though since it was so fast.

True. I see them on the previous page. Gosh where have I been?

Anyways congrats to those being accepted!

Hahah Juan, I don't think any of us expected decisions so soon. It looks like they accepted people from October thru January. For those of us who interviewed during that time and haven't heard back, I really don't think it is time to panic. Last year they sent out a small batch first and then more batches every 2-3 weeks.

True. Panic is never a virtue. Especially as a future physician. 😉

Hi all, PLEASE HELP ME I am freaking out -- When I log in to the UCLA site to check, I see under the row labeled "Final Decision Letter" --- status is "SENT" then the date is 2/12/14 ... but it does not give me any options to click on like other people have mentioned! Does this mean that it is a rejection letter? What does it look like for the people who are accepted? Do I have to wait for the letter? It just seems like other people have had something to click on or something that says "ACCEPTED", but mine does not say "accepted" anywhere.... its just a date.... ahhhhhhh my heart is beating through my chest!!

Dr. Hall said that if letters are sent this early, it's good news. So Congrats!

On very last line it says something like: Accepted student check list and next to it you can click on Requested and the pdf letter will be there. If it's still confusing I can take a screen shot

Yes, can you post a screen shot? I don't see any of that.... not a check list or a PDF... but I am not sure If I am looking in the right place. Have they sent out rejections yet? Does anyone else see a date for letter sent but not anything about a checklist?

It looks like I may just end up obsessively refreshing the webpage every 30 seconds for the next few days and checking my mailbox in between. I should probably go take a walk .... this is so stressful!

UCLA is my #1 choice!

My page went down for a bit (got an error code instead of a status/date area) so I got nervous excited but then it came back up an hour or so later looking the same.

If it is at all like what played out in last years thread there were definitely no rejection/wait lists till much later than now (although there weren't as many people reporting any changes either)

you know my page changed as well! It's confusing...But here is what I was able to open yesterday
Screen Shot 2014-02-14 at 9.19.22 AM.png

does your page look like my page now? Maybe I would have seen what you saw if I had checked yesterday? Maybe they changed it back for some reason? I am trying to think positive thoughts right now lol

That's what I see now too...but yesterday it was an expanded window

Anyone not URM/non-trad/disadvantaged applicant get accepted yet? From what I can gather all those who have been accepted fall within one of those categories.

OMG you are making me very happy and excited right now... I guess that I can just try to enjoy my butterflies and hope.... definitely feeling a little better now, but wishing I had gone on to the site yesterday! Wow-O-Wow... holey moley ... *fingers crossed*

I think they are experiencing some technical issues right now, because I'm trying to complete some requested info and the website is acting out lol

I imagine UCLA is sending acceptances based on highest rank first. Most of those reporting acceptances have gotten other top school acceptances already.

Always a voice of reason Pyrrion 🙂

It always stresses me out to peruse SDN and see these amazing applicants reporting good news so early:joyful: Then again, I'm expecting a wait-list

Also, trying to discern the thought process of adcoms is an impossible endeavor. It's best not to even try. 😛

I agree with above. This is likely a good sign.

catzzz88... I have the same thing. I saw the accepted student checklist this morning and entered in my military status (one of the things on the checklist). When I went back to the portal just now, the checklist was gone. All I have now is "final decision letter sent 2/13/2014" I think you're good =)

Has anyone with below-average numbers been accepted? I would say I fall in that category and I'm crossing my fingers!

Can we assume that they will be sending out more acceptances in the coming weeks? My status has not changed. I'm hoping for the best! Congratulations to those accepted! 😀

For those accepted, I'm assuming you did great at the interview! How were your post-interview feelings? I have no idea how I did.

Mais bien sûr sans aucun doute.

Im a little confused about this: do interviewed applicants need to send in their transcript right now? Do they need to receive it to give us a decision? Thank you!

no, it doesn't affect their decision. Its required if you matriculate

Received an II just now.

What are the odds of acceptance after an interview at this point, compared to earlier in the cycle?

Are all the acceptances etc right now regular Geffen applicants? MD only?

Congrats! When did you submit your secondary?

Hey everyone. I'm a current 4th year medical student at UCLA and I want to say Congratulations to all those who have been accepted! Welcome to the Geffen family and I really hope to meet some of you during second look!

For those of you who are still waiting to hear back post-interview, do not fret because UCLA always releases decisions in batches with the majority (including more acceptances) being released in March.

Also, since there seems to be a lot of questions about Update Letters, I thought I would share my experience with you. I interviewed with UCLA in December of my application cycle and was waitlisted in February. At that time, I sent them a one page letter as a pdf attachment about what I had been doing during the application year and stating that I was still very much interested in attending UCLA for medical school. Around May 15, when all applicants must hold only one acceptance and waitlist movement begins, I sent another, shorter letter (by e-mail) outlining my specific reasons for wanting to go to UCLA. I still had not heard anything from them in late June and was about to go on a two-week trip out of the country but I decided to give it one last shot. At this point, the one acceptance I held on to was Hopkins and I thought it was important that UCLA know they were my number one choice (since I believe schools, at that point, know what acceptance you're hanging on to). I sent a very brief letter (again by e-mail) stating the exact dates that I would be out of the country but that I could still be reached by e-mail and emphasizing that UCLA was my #1 choice and that I would 100% attend if offered a spot off the waitlist. The morning after I returned from my trip, I got a call from the admissions office asking how my trip was and informing me that I was no longer attending Hopkins for medical school. I quickly accepted UCLA's offer and have never looked back since. After being here for almost 4 years, I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions of my life.

The point of my story is this:

#1: Yes, the UCLA Admissions Committee does look at Letters of Intent/Update and take them seriously but they're probably most important if you're waitlisted. If you're post-interview and haven't received a decision, the AdCom will most likely see your update letter but will probably base their decision largely on your paper application and interview score. If you're pre-interview and have been complete for awhile, it can't hurt to show interest with an update letter but I still think your paper application will be the determining factor of whether you get an interview.

#2: If you're waitlisted at your #1 choice program, whether it be UCLA or somewhere else, you have to be persistent and express your interest. When considering applicants off the waitlist, I think AdCom's look more towards how likely is this applicant to come here than perhaps the application itself. Do not be afraid to let them know that they're your number one choice but do not lie about this. I know for a fact that residency programs will write down the names of applicants who tell multiple schools that they're their number one choice and ban them from fellowship and I wouldn't be surprised if medical schools do the same.

Hope this clears a little up regarding letters of update! Congrats again to those who have been accepted and I hope all of you come out to second look!

For those who've been accepted, when is second look this year? I might be able to plan it around my spring break if I get good news in March

I hope they release the february interview dates acceptances soon! I'm getting nervous!

I believe it's the first weekend in April (April 5 or 6) but I would double check this with an accepted applicant.

Second view on 04/06.
Question to those that have been accepted: did your status page interface changed? On Thursday I had an expended window with many features and lots of additional requirements. Now it's just says letter was sent.
Also, how do we accept the acceptance offer? Thank you
