2013-2014 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was wondering if anyone knew which e-mail to send updates to, I was looking through the website and couldn't seem to find one.
Thanks.

any "final decision letter sent" status updates this week or last?

this is such a harsh process. i know it's best to wait patiently with an open-mind but proving to be extremely difficult. i want this badly but that probably goes for everyone else on here. thanks everyone for updating your news and current students for all the help/comments.

Oh my word... That match list is incredible! I had no idea. This match list is better than most I have seen. I guess that clinical training at Ronald Reagan Medical Center (the top rated hospital on the west coast) probably holds some weight when it comes to residency!

Agreed. Now I have no qualms about turning down UCSF for UCLA. Proud to be a Bruin! 🙂

Question about housing: on my portal under housing link I submitted that I will need housing, but I didn't fill out any info, is it the same for you guys as well?

ah, I see...thanks! anyone know if they've stopped handing them out?
One of my friends called yesterday regarding her status... She was told "[the person answering the phone] isn't 100% sure, but expects that they are done with II, unless there are cancellations for the remaining dates."

Hello future schoolmates!
Here is the second look agenda. We are completely revamping second look this year and it is going to be really great, so don't miss out!
More details to follow.

Hey Juan, any idea when folks who interviewed in January will hear back? Before April 4th?

Short answer. I cant say for sure but my guess is that if you are an applicant/interviewee that DGSOM really likes then they are going to try and let you know ASAP, especially before revisit.

Got my letter today. Wow Geffen Scholarship... I feel so fortunate. Best of luck everyone!
Do you mind sharing your stats? Just out of curiosity, as I am wondering how heavily the Geffen Scholarship is based on MCAT and GPA.

I've been told that the Geffen Scholarship isn't a pure merit based scholarship but is based on a variety of factors including need, ECs, and the like.

42/3.95+ GPA. However, I don't think it's as simple as "highest GPA and MCAT = Geffen scholarship" because I know people with much lower MCAT and GPA who have gotten it, and people with 40+ MCAT and 4.0 GPA who have not. Stats just happen to be my strength 🙁

It's supposed to be entirely merit-based, so I don't think need is a factor, although maybe showing specific hardship counts? Dunno.

Does anyone know when UCLA usually sends post-interview updates? I can't remember if they said they would come after March or during. I know a few have been accepted but I was wondering when the majority of applicants will find out.

Thanks!

I was told at my interview that by March 30, they will have accepted enough people to fill up their class for upcoming year. So we have at least two more weeks to know before we find out if we didn't make the initial cut. Of course, our apps can be in limbo all the way til July post interview :depressed::depressed:

Is it a bad sign that I interviewed in early November and I still haven't heard back?

So I haven't been posting on SDN recently but I thought I'd drop in and say that I just finished interviewing at UCLA and it was amazing!! The students were cool, the medical and research facilities were awesome, and LA was better than expected. Geffen definitely just jumped to the top of my list. Now the waiting... Oh and we were told that if we haven't heard anything by June that we should call and ask where we are. Apparently they'll give us a good idea about whether it's worth it to keep waiting.

No. Most people haven't heard back yet. Friday or early next week is when UCLA is expected to begin releasing the majority of decisions...

Source? Or speculation?

Dr. Hall told my interview group that by March 30th UCLA should have at least accepted enough people to fill up their class for the fall. Whether that means we have to wait til then or they'll have a big batch of acceptances earlier is something else entirely.

Remember, too: most people who interview will NOT be accepted. Sorry for being realistic 🙁

Correct, approximately 1 out of 3 who are interviewed get accepted.
I was pretty bummed when the new US News info came out because in the 2014 ranking, UCLA interviewed 125 OOS and accepted 76 which is ~60% acceptance rate post-interview and since I'm OOS, I thought that was awesome for me. But the new 2015 numbers showed something like 180 OOS interviewed and only 53 acceptances which is just about the 33% post-interview acceptance rate that most schools have. Even sadder because I absolutely fell in love with this school after interviewing here

As far I can remember, my status was unchanged as late as the morning of the day my letter arrived, but it has now been updated. My stats: 36/3.9+/IS

So you found out via letter before status portal?

*cue everyone frantically checking mail*

sorry to hear that. :/ california state schools must be just realms of sadness for out of state students...

do you have to have a premium edition of us news rankings to see those numbers? can you let us know the numbers for in-state applicants? tried looking, but couldn't find. thanks!

To current students: are submitting extra LOR/updates not worth it at this point?

lol yeah, i'm happy to have made it this far as an OOS applicant. I did get them from the premium edition. For IS, it was 719 interviewed and 248 accepted which is also hovering right around the same percentage. Not sure why for the previous year, the OOS post-interview acceptance rate was so high. IIRC, IS for 2014 was about the same at around 30%

Oh, I just remembered one more thing that Dr. Hall said at our interview that people might be interested in. He said that they haven't yet accepted a number of students equal to the number in their incoming class and that they accept ~ 45 % of their class after May 15th.

Edit: Disregard. Thought that said March 15th.

Yes, there is basically lots of action to still come!
