2013-2014 University of Massachusetts Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to everyone!

Did any one who interviewed in December hear back yet.. I'm getting antsy lol

A number of people who interviewed both before and after December have received acceptances. Is there some circumstance besides time that you think would make December interviewees distinct? I'm pretty sure UMass is operating like most other non-rolling schools where several weeks after an applicant interviews, the adcom will meet to discuss their application. Based on the overall score the applicant receives, they'll either be accepted outright, or be placed in a deferred pile until after the interview season has completed and the schools sends out the remaining offers/rejections.

If you haven't heard back yet, like me, it probably means that you weren't among their most desired applicants, unfortunately. It's by no means a rejection or even a W/L, but it just means you have to be patient. Based on some of the more recent acceptances coming from people who interviewed back in October, it's likely that as season draws to a close, their 'threshold' for admitting students is becoming lower.

Of course, this is only my rationale and while it seems reasonable to me, we're talking about medical school admissions, so who the hell knows what's going on in adcoms minds...

Also, congrats to everyone being accepted!!

I'm only wondering because out of the SDN posters who listed their acceptance decisions, either they were outright accepted right after their interview (like two week turnover rate) or their acceptance trickled in a few months later (and primarily, out of the people who have posted so far, have been people with high stats and interviewed in September or October.) Granted, SDN is a tiny percentage of who's gotten a decision so far but I'm just wondering if they're making decisions now on a pseudo rolling basis.

You're probably right though about their decision making process. Shrug lol

Congrats to everyone accepted today! Only feeling vaguely eviscerated!

Yeah, hard to say. I suppose it's possible that they have now started doing second looks at earlier candidates in the order of their interviews, though less likely, IMO. Regardless, it would appear that the waiting game continues 🙁

slowly losing hope... ~34ish or so spots left counting the md/phD spots
dont lose hope this quickly. I am still waiting to hear back and am fully optimistic! they will send out at least another 5o invites. Umass is quite a great school but there are students will really high credentials who have been accepted but who are probably waiting to hear back from the IVYs. I would not be surprised if around 4/15, there was a rapid acceptance of people from the waitlist b/c accepted students opt going to an IVY league.

LOL, you'd think they'd learn from their mistake the first time. Unless it's intended just to make us SDN'ers more neuortic and crazy...
Haha maybe they're doing it on purpose so we can make friends... 🙄 Nice guy UMass.

Interviewed on Nov 13, and still waiting to hear back. Normally waiting is painful, but this is more so because I love this school!

Hang in there!

But I do know what you mean. During my interview day I kept thinking, "Oh crap, this place is AMAZING. Now I won't get it because I love it!". This was the only interview day that I had this feeling of dread. But alas, fate smiled on me, and I'm sure the same will happen for you.

Congratulations on your acceptance! I am waiting for that same smile and thanks for the positive message.

When did you interview, and when did you get the acceptance offer?

Just out of curiosity, has anyone gotten the Certiphi background check email AFTER getting an acceptance? Or should we view that as a precursor to getting in?

It may be a precursor... If it helps at all, I got the certiphi email the same day, a few hours before the acceptance email.

I got mine after I got in - acceptance e-mail sent Friday afternoon, Certiphi e-mail received the following Monday morning...

I suppose another confounding factor
For me was that I got a suny downstate acceptance soon after and they tend to send the certiphi email well before the acceptance package (snail mail). So not sure if I would have gotten certiphi after the umass acceptance if i didn't have suny.

too quiet...

It is possible some committee members were on spring break and didn't meet this past week? Don't know, just a guess
I quickly searched for the academic calendar on Friday and it looked like Spring Break was not for a couple more weeks.

lets just say they took a break and no acceptance were offered last friday 🙂 probability would state that at least one of the few people who are posting here and that I know were accepted last friday. I'm just going to assume they took a break. More waiting for us!...

Hey everybody - first time posting. I wouldn't read too much into UMASS workings - it's all a mystery. I interviewed in October and was accepted a few weeks ago! Don't lose hope!
