2013-2014 University of Massachusetts Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've talked to several classmates who had the same interviewers as me (back in the pre-MMI days) and the timeframe from when we interviewed until when we heard back with outright acceptances *definitely* seems to correlate with who your interviewers were. I wouldn't read too much into it--don't lose hope yet 🙂

Sorry if this has been covered, but does anyone know when the last interview date is? Or have they concluded? Somewhat related, does anyone know when Second Look will be? I kind of assume that they'll send out the remained of their decisions (including wait-lists) before then.

Kind of need some good news 🙁

Not sure about when the last interview date is, but Second Look Weekend is April 25th. Good luck!

Second look is Friday April 25. Don't know the answers to your other questions, unfortunately.

I've been thinking by noon, the past batches being announced on here were always around 11am but who can say for sure?

I think people have gotten in around the afternoon, like after 2pm. They might do like a morning acceptance and an afternoon, not sure. Also, has anyone who interviewed in early fall like September and October not heard back yet? I interviewed October 22nd, I hope they have not moved on from us!

Yeah I was in that 10/22 group too and haven't heard. There have been a few from that group who have been accepted in the past month but I'm trying/hoping not to read into that at all...

Ya I am just confused as to why this process is taking so long for them. Has anyone tried calling them and asking about the timeline for the process?

Q for current students:

Do a lot of students receive financial aid in the form of scholarships / grants from the school? If so, what is the average award (best guestimate). Also, when should we except the financial aid award letters to come out?

Does anyone know if UMMS is basically done sending out acceptances for now? I imagine they're at or close to 125 acceptances already. Plus, it also says on their website that second-look invites go out mid-March 🙁

Has anyone from Boston been accepted? I wonder if there's a bias against people from there since there are already so many doctors in that part of the state.

I was accepted from the Boston area, and I went to UG in Worcester. Not sure if either of those facts played a significant role.

They are still having Committee Meeting on the 20th and 27th so I guess there are still spots in the class. Don't give up hope yet

I'm living in Boston now and was accepted. I doubt it's much of a factor at all.

I'm thinking I'm going to stay up as late as possible tonight so that I sleep through a day that would otherwise be filled with futile (or at least that's what the last 6+ months of post-interview waiting would predict) email checking. Ohhhh Fridayssss

I'll be at work all day with my email open. Waiting.

Based on previous years' threads, waitlists will happen in ~3 weeks, and rejection in ~4-5 weeks. I assume a bunch of people in this thread will report waitlists, and if you're not among those people it's probably safe to assume a rejection will come later.

Since they had the committee meeting yesterday, they already made some decisions and now it would be up to the administrators to send out emails. I don't think match day will affect this process much but let's see.

How did you know that they met yesterday and made decisions?

I know for sure they met yesterday. was told by a member

Hi everyone, I've been following this thread all year, and I just got accepted this morning. I know how much it sucks to be left waiting without any information so hang in there everyone. Here are my stats and interview information:
3.8 GPA, 32 MCAT, Interview on Dec. 12th

I sent a letter of intent about 3 weeks ago, not sure if that helped at all. Good luck in the coming weeks to all of you guys!

Yay...so some movement. Congrats!!

For those of you already at UMass, did most of you hear back in March or April? I mean getting accepted directly, not getting waitlisted. Also, since the interview format changed, do any of you think that many acceptances might go out later than last year's thread?

I think the class is basically/almost full. Since there were 98 acceptances a couple weeks ago, it seems like the rest of us are waiting for waitlist or rejection decisions from here on out 🙁

This might have been mentioned, but I wonder how many they accept in total?

How do you know there were 98 acceptances last few weeks? On the facebook group, only like 60 people have joined (obviously it doesn't mean only 60 have gotten in, but still)... I hope they are not done yet for sure haha, on the bright side, they do take a Ton of people off the waitlist based on last year's thread!

If you look earlier in this thread, they inadvertently sent an email to all those offered a seat without hiding the recipient list so those on the list could basically see everyone who was given an acceptance.

If you go back a page or two on the thread, UMass sent a mass financial aid email to everyone accepted without BCC ing so people counted how many emails were sent... lol. It's 98 so far at least.

Someone else mentioned in this thread that according to US News Compass (the subscription) they accepted ultimately 190~ ish students, so that probably means like a third to one half of the class came from the waitlist.

Jeezzz....ya it seems that after next week they will be sending out waitlists and rejections as was previously mentioned...time to accept the sad truth 🙁 ......so if waitlisted...time to wait ANOTHEr 1.5-2 months...till end of May....yay.....

Can anyone find the match list for UMASS from yesterday? All I can find is a news story.

Very good match day for UMass.

I'm a fan of the 16 people who matched in CA. Especially the two that matched into EM in CA. I'm a little surprised with number of people who matched into peds. Lots of people love kids from this class, I guess?

Every year there are tons of pediatrics matches, I have no idea why. Maybe they like accepting people who have done some kind of service around kids?

It's probably more likely that because the school is much less expensive than others, then people are more likely to go into lower paying specialties (like peds) if they like it.

Anyone know if it's feasible to live in the Boston area and commute to school? Like, live in Arlington and commute from there?
