2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nope. All my hopes are riding on Miller ... Which, coincidentally, is my top choice.

I really hope you get in then!!! Crossing my fingers for you!

Every night before bed I sing Frozen's "Let it Go" to myself as a reminder that I should stop expecting good news.
My hair grows white as I'm waiting tonight
No acceptance to be seen
A letter of consolation,
And it's written... by the dean.

The waitlist's moving as it's whirling towards July
Off to SDN, let them know I tried

They'll let me in, they said to me
Act like this school was always meant to be
Intent, just sent, it's what I'll show
So now they'll know...

My interviewer told me (close to) 7 months ago that I am guaranteed to get accepted here and that I should anticipate scholarships yada yada. 7 months later I am still waiting for a call. Just goes to show how unpredictable admissions is and to take what interviewers say with a grain of salt cause some people's words may not have as much weight as others during those adcoms meetings.

It is unfortunate that your interviewer said this. While the interview is an important part of your application it is not the only thing that matters.

Hi DrZeke,

Given your experience with the admissions process at Miller, what would you say the chances are for someone who's still on the wait list?

A few acceptances will probably go out based on people getting off waitlist at places they rather go to over UM. However, I think you should have a plan B in place and coming up with ways to strengthen your app if you have no other acceptances.

Thanks for the info!

Hi everyone, I’m a long-time lurker here on SDN. This is my first post.

I’m on the alternate list here at UM and I’m trying to figure out what the chances are of being accepted at this point.

For anyone who is currently holding a seat at UM, are you (or anybody that you know of who doesn’t post on SDN) planning on or thinking about withdrawing from your seat at UM? (For example, if you’ve been accepted elsewhere and are planning on going there.)

If you don’t feel comfortable publicly posting, please private message me. I’m just trying to figure out how many more seats may become available. Knowing any information at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance and best of luck to everyone! Go Canes!

I, too, would love to know this!

And GO CANES for sure!

Hi everyone- rising MS4 here. Congrats to all who have been accepted- any of y'all have any questions about MS1 year? Feel free to post here/PM. I'm on vacation for two weeks- I'll try and answer as many questions as I can.

Hi Nivens....you answered my post in the class of 2014 thread but I thought I'd follow up here with it...
Thanks for responding, by the way!

How big of an impact do you think the quartile ranking made in your or your classmates' residency options? You stated that you could have an A average and be in the 3rd or 4th quartile, but would that have a huge impact if you did well on step 1, had solid LORs, interviews, etc?

Basically, I'm just trying to sort out how this whole things works without any kind individual performance marker (like a GPA). You get this quartile ranking which is a comparison to your classmates but what does it really mean?

Having matched into a competitive specialty I found that step 1, letters and 3rd year commentary from evals mattered a lot more than grades.

My understanding is in agreement with DrZeke's comment. Something minor to keep in mind is that your quartile rank is taken into consideration for AOA selection, which is a big boon to any application (but by no means required for any specialty if the rest of your app is solid). For the rest of us mortals, the quartile rank is one part of the formula that determines our "descriptor" at the end of the MSPE- Medical Student Performance Evaluation, aka the Deans Letter- along with research and participation in student life. However, the descriptors range from "Good" to "Excellent" and, psychologically speaking, are highly unlikely to make or break a solid app.

I wouldn't let minor details such as these stress you out too much, mostly because the stuff that's really going to frustrate you about medical school are things you won't have a clue about until you've handed over at least a couple of tuition checks. The important thing to remember is that every school has it's quirks, but if you work hard you'll get where you want to go.

any word of people getting off the alternate list lately?

Hi, Class of 2017, I'll be transferring in from Asia to MD year2 this coming July. May I know when does the class officially begins? Thanks.

So I finally got this status "Your application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. At this time, a final decision has not been reached on your application." like..a week ago maybe after being under review/complete since early September. Is that a silent rejection? Sorry I haven't really read this thread that much.

hey! im in the current application cycle and have the same status, do you mind sharing whether or not you ended up receiving a II? i really dont know what this means :/

I'm sorry but I didn't end up getting one, but I don't know if that happened to everyone!
I did get in somewhere, so stay positive 🙂

Complete early August and still under review. Anyone else on the same boat? What does it mean if this status hasn't changed for such a long time?

Same here. It's possible that they have a large application pile
