2013-2014 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wow. very good stats and rejected pre-interview? damn. You have the same GPA as me and +1 higher on mcat and im OOS (but percentage American Indian if that means anything). Duluth must take into account many other factors, I do not believe that your rejection was due to your stats. I didn't realize how competitive the Duluth campus is. However, I think if you end up gettin an ii at TC that you should still call/email the duluth campus and tell them you are in the area. They are VERY accommodating to ITA requests. Also, I submitted my TC secondary on 8/6 and received an ii on 8/27 for an interview on 9/20, I received a call on 8/27 from Duluth saying they want to interview a day before (they knew i had received an ii at TC). Accepted into Duluth 10/16 still have yet to hear from TC. Dont let the rejection bring you down. Iv been rejected/put on hold at almost ALL my safety schools, but have gotten ii's from my 'stretch' schools. My life has been a roller-coaster these past few months! The app process is a crap shoot. Good luck with everything. Hope all goes well.

Yea, I am hoping Duluth rejected me due to my lack of rural experience. I grew up near St. Cloud, MN, which is not a rural setting. I am also currently in MN working as an emergency physician scribe, so I don't think an ITA request will do me any good haha. I have yet to hear back from any other schools, so I'm not too depressed yet. Congrats on your acceptance to Duluth though!

Maybe they assumed you would go to TC over Duluth anyway.

That's possible. I called the admissions staff at UMD and was told feedback on applications is unavailable right now. She told me to call back in April if I have not been accepted anywhere.

I was waitlisted yesterday as well. IS, interviewed 9/20. Pretty bummed as TC was definitely my top choice. Hopefully the wait list will move more than it did last year!

Anyone got any insider info on when the scholarship committee meets or releases decisions?

Last year, those decisions weren't released until June.
Woah that's not the impression i got from my acceptance email, but it wasn't specific.

"the scholarship committee is reviewing candidates for consideration and will announce awards on a rolling basis. We will be in touch regarding scholarship awards at a later date. "

Made me think sooner than later. Hmmm.

First post, just got my secondary from UMD, here is hoping 👍

just wondering when was your primary verified and complete? my AMCAS was verified around late september and I still haven't heard anything back about a secondary 🙁

Same here, didn't realize they pre-screened so heavily! Better late than never?
AMCAS verified 9/13/13
Selected TC 9/13/13
Got the "Those invited to complete supplemental application" pre-screen 9/23/13
Secondary received 11/6/13!
Submitting asap... all questions have been pre-written

Strong IS ties. Would love for this to somehow work out even though the secondary was received later than preferred in the cycle.

Rejected from Minnesota. First real post complete rejection and it's from my alma mater. Stings quite a bit.
+1 here. They were extremely quick to reject pre-interview.

that's the odd thing, I submitted on 11/4 so it not complete yet, this is for UMD though not TC. I don't know if that makes a difference

Got an invitation to submit a secondary for TC yesterday! OOS/30/3.8GPA
I think Duluth just sends out secondaries without screening cause I also got Duluth's secondary the next day I submitted my AMCAS

How long has it taken OOS people to go through the screening before getting their secondary? I've gotten an email a while back about being complete, but no secondary yet, though I think my stats are competitive enough that they should want my money 🙂

sGPA 3.83, 37MCAT

Initial email - 10/15
AMCAS verified/TC selected - 11/1 (I missed the part that I had to select school the first time, so that slowed things a bit)
Supplemental application - 11/7

OOS, 3.77, 36

Waitlisted at Duluth today 🙁 Stats on MDApps.

anybody who interviewed 9/27 (or around there) heard anything yet? I thought we were supposed to hear back in 5-7 weeks...?

Interviewed 9/30. I think they may be meeting today, so some calls could come out this afternoon. It seems like it has been a while seen anyone on SDN received an acceptance. Good luck all, hopefully we will get some good news!

Wait-listed at Duluth yesterday, OOS, interviewed 10-15

When we interviewed on 10/28 they said they were already behind reviewing applicants. Hopefully late Oct ppl will hear by Xmas :/

Bummer! I was really hoping to hear pre-Thanksgiving for my mid-october interview. They didn't mention anything about being behind at mine, so hopefully they aren't that behind. Did anyone get a call this week?

On a less stressful note, the new dean sounds awesome! http://www.startribune.com/local/231941771.html

Last year, most students who didn't interview very early took about 8-12 weeks to hear back.

ah that sucks, was hoping to hear before Christmas.

Anyone know if Duluth gets back to applicants before the proposed 4-6 wk deadline?

Got an acceptance call from Dean Patel at 3 PM!!!! Feeling so fortunate to be accepted. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back!

Congrats, friend.

Is or oos? And was there any chance she said anything about scholarships? I want to attend but I probably won't unless they give me one of their non-resident scholarships... kind of worried i was passed over since I was accepted last month...

Thanks, IS and I interviewed on the 9/30. She did not say anything about scholarships. It sounds like scholarships are not even being considered until December, and the OOS ones sound like they incorporate financial need so that would be after the FAFSA is filled out. Reading through your older posts makes it seem like you would be a great addition to the school. The fact that someone who interviewed you sent you a letter clearly says the university is interested in you. Be patient, and I bet you will get one of the scholarships. Good luck, and hopefully we will be classmates next year!

I interviewed in last year's cycle 12/13 and was accepted 1/16 as in IS. In my acceptance letter they offered a $5k scholarship for the first year. I didn't do anything extra to be considered for that scholarship. That letter arrived the 1/19. When financial aid finally sent their letter in late July, I received a little more money from all the FAFSA business. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Thanks guys. And for the kind words Phoenix. I'm going to let it be til mid to late December when I'll have a better idea of where things stand. Asking them probably won't hurt at that point. I would totally go here over Ohio State, but idk if offered significant aid there... is for osu is 20k cheaper than oos umn 🙁

So do you not need to send your official transcripts with your letter of intent to the TC or do they ask for them later?

They ask for them when they're complete. I'm taking a spring class- why get transcripts now when they could get final ones in June? All you need is the doi and deposit.

Thanks, that makes total sense. My nontraditional status is shining through!

Whats doi? Just trying to keep up with acronyms🙂
