2013-2014 University of Rochester Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
been complete since july... not a peep. What is the deal here? lol
+2 I keep waiting for my rejection since it seems like they have been sending out a lot of them lately.

are there any current rochester students on the thread that I can PM with questions? I am an accepted student and there is a very good chance I'll be attending!

I went there for UG if you have any questions about living in the "white-coat ghetto" near strong or the vibrant Rochester nightlife. Shameless plug here for my ex's bar, The Old Toad. Go there if you like whiskey and/or amazing beer.

II today! Stats on MD apps, complete 7/10. I will be withdrawing due to other acceptances- but good luck to everyone else and don't lose hope!

How long of an interval do most people allow to pass before writing thank you notes?

Depending on when I get back home, I send mine that night or the following morning.

Quick question for current students, what are research opportunities like at Rochester? I know they are very supportive of taking a year out for research, but what about during the summer of M1 and M2 years? Is there easy access to faculty?

Also, what are some honest opinions about the city of Rochester itself? I really, really like this school, but I'd like to know a bit more about the area.

I'm an undergrad at U of R and have lived in Rochester for the past 5 years. I love the area and the hubby and I would really like to settle down here eventually, so U of R Med is my first choice for sure. Rochester is a large urban area, but not as crowded as say NYC. In fact it's the third largest city in New York State, There is a huge hinterland of farm country since Western New York produces most of the food for the state. Rochester is a big music town with the Eastman School of music's influence. There are a ton of festivals, practically one each weekend, and always something fun to do. The crime rate is high and the public education system needs serious fixing, but our new mayor is hopeful of fixing that. Side note: we just elected our first black female mayor, and as the city of Susan B. Anthony and Fredrick Douglass, it is pretty exciting! Rochester is the center for movements and change both presently and historically: women's rights, temperance, abolitionist, locavorism, hipsters, etc! Best of all Western New York has some of the lowest cost of living in New York State. It's still pretty expensive if you are OOS, but cheap for a life time New Yorker like me! The weather can be unpredictable and pretty crappy; note the characteristic 'Rochester grey", but the snow actually makes up for it. I hope this helps, let me know if you want any more info.

how many people does rochester usually take off the waitlist every year and how large is the waitlist?

Anyone else interviewing this Friday? This is my top choice and at this point I only have one other II so I'm really nervous/excited.

During my interview they fished around for Rochester connections; sounds like you have that made. It's an extremely low-key interview. Just keeping taking deep, soothing yoga breaths and you'll be fine.

Any October interviewees get decisions yet?

Doesn't seem to be a lot of action after the first wave of Oct 15ish acceptances. This is one of my top choices, getting very antsy! Also hoping to cancel some Dec interviews if I get accepted here, lol.

They give 6-8 weeks between the interview and decision. So those who interviewed early Oct should hear back soon.

Thanks for the advise! I keep hearing that it's a really chill interview. I just wish I had another one under my belt before I have to do this one since it is my top choice. But, I guess that is just the luck of the draw.

where does one see the changes in the app? do you get emails or is it on the secondary app page?

Is the status just reflected in the applicant portal? The same website we filled it out on?

When people mentioned that the neighborhood isn't safe? Just how bad is it?

Is it comparable/as notorious to the "south" side of Chicago or "east" LA? or much better?

No it isn't as bad as people say. I've lived in Rochester for the past four years as an undergrad and though there is crime, it's about the same level you would expect in any city. Also Rochester isn't a "small town"! It's the third largest city in New York State with over 200,000 people within the city and if you consider the "Greater Rochester Area" you will be including 9 surrounding counties! So, no it isn't small. It's just more spread out than say NYC or Chicago.

Congrats to all of those accepted!!! and best wishes to those still waiting to here something back. I'm a first year at the U of R and am loving it thus far. That relaxed inviting feeling that several of you mentioned getting during interviews was one of the reasons I decided to come to Rochester, and it has continued to be the case since I've been here. As far as research goes, there seems to be a lot of opportunity. A good number of students receive institutional funding to do summer research after M1 that can be used for doing work in Rochester or at another institution. Some of the individual departments also provide funding opportunities for students interested in working with them. Also, I've been impressed with the availability of the faculty to meet with students. Those I've emailed to inquire about their research or to talk about their specialty have made time to meet and seem truly interested in offering advice. I hope that helps. Best of luck to you all!!!! 🙂

Has Rochester sent out any recent IIs/rejections? I've been complete since mid-Aug but so far only silence

+1. I'm shocked. Or maybe they lost my app...

Leave it to pre-meds to find the negative in not being rejected yet. Sometimes it feels like a no-win game.

Approaching the 7 week mark since my interview.... patience is key I guess. Has anyone waited longer than 8 weeks to hear a post-interview decision from this school?

ACCEPTED! JUST got the call from Pat 5 minutes ago. They said they would send mail and email tomorrow.

Interviewed 10/25

Congrats!!!!!

I really hope I get a phone call...interviewed early Oct. The wait is killing me, I really liked this school.

Im sorry for all the rejections.

I have heard nothing from UR. Are they receptive to LOI?

Waitlist today.. Time for update.

Does anyone know how much the waitlist moves?

Sent from my phone.

At the small group sessions, Dr. Hansen mentioned that they are receptive to LOI (post-interview). I'm not sure about pre-interview. He also mentioned that they would take LOIs into account if you have been waitlisted and show genuine interest in attending the University of Rochester.

Sorry about the waitlists, I do believe there is significant movement on them later in the season. When did you guys interview?

Waitlisted today, early Oct interview.

I'm very disappointed. I will be sending an update to them very soon. Thankfully I have several worthwhile things to report.

Sorry to hear about it. And nice humble brag in there 👍

Lots of people get waitlisted here. There are actually way fewer seats available than it seems. They have 103 seats, but for the C/O 2017 as reported online in their class profile, 5 are from the undergrad-MD combined program at Rochester, 7 from Bryn Mawr Postbac, 7 from early assurance programs from other undergrads, 9 are MD/PHDs, 2 deferred, 10 have alumni/faculty connections, and 18 are URM. There could be lots of overlap between those categories, but it's pretty safe to say that around half the seats are gone if you don't fit into those categories.

Can someone comment on using AP credits to fulfill the one year English requirement? Is it possible to use a none-Englih class to fulfill the requirement? I would hate to have to take an additional English class just to apply here...

You should be able to find information about this on their website or on MSAR.

Edit: Also, I have found that many schools do take non-English, writing intensive courses. Butyou will need to show that the course was writing intensive by sending in a syllabus of the course probably.

Accepted!! I could not be more excited! This is one my top choices so there's a good chance I'll be there next year 🙂 Interviewed in the first week of October. Fingers crossed for everyone still waiting!

On their website it says they need year of writing intensive courses, so you're probably correct in saying that a non-english course could count. However, as a science major I don't have many courses that I think could fit this criteria... perhaps I can find a gen ed that can. Oh well. Thanks!

Good luck! I'm sure you'll find a course that will work.
