2013-2014 University of Southern California (Keck) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From Keck or an outside scholarship source? The Keck students I spoke with said that they don't really hand out much money. I could be wrong...
From keck, I believe its a merit based scholarship.

Anybody else hear back from financial aid or about scholarships?

I emailed financial aid last week and they said financial aid packages would be sent out in late April. The merit based scholarships are part of the admissions department, and the woman I contacted informed me that they are offered at the same time as admission is granted. If someone with a scholarship declines the offer of admission, they give it to someone else. She also said there are very, very few of those given out.

I also received a full tuition merit based scholarship, about two weeks or so after being accepted. I received the notification through a phone call and then a letter in the mail.

For those of you receiving these full scholarships, are ya'll California natives or something? Super high MCAT? I'm trying to figure out my chances of getting ANY non-loan based aid. Congrats btw!

Congrats!!! Do you mind sharing your stats?
My gpa is a little below average and mcat is above. LizzyM score of 71ish. I think I really clicked with the school and maybe my interview reflected that. ORM. Strong lors and above average ECs

Congratulations. Couple of questions: What date did you interview? Did you get email from USC or application status change? Again congratulations

Alternate listed just now, dam I really wanted to go here.

 Any advice to get through this?

Take this QID by mouth. Refrain from taking it per rectum. Pairs well wings and BBQ meats. May cause poor sexual pairings and regret.

I am also on the alternate list as of this afternoon. I was really hoping to get in here. This school is a great fit for me.

Unfortunately, I have more waiting to do...

In fact, I am officially only on wait lists and not currently accepted anywhere. Worst feeling ever.

My optimism is quickly fading. I am at that point where it is easier to just accept that I am not getting in than it is to keep waiting and hoping. I cannot wait hopefully any longer.

Congrats to everyone accepted this year! Those still waiting, I sincerely feel for you...

They just had their Pliny the Younger yearly tour this past month. I hear its pretty good but not worth the fanfare.

Talking to my classmates, there seems to be a lot of waitlist movement at Keck, so don't feel to down if you are on the alternate list. One of my roommates, a ton of my friends, and I were all accepted off the waitlist, so the waitlist movement is more than just a handful of people.

Also, don't worry about not hearing back even though someone from your interview date already heard back. It usually isn't any indication of your application decision. More than likely, it is due to an interviewer submitting their eval late, a committee member not being present when reviewing your app, or some other logistical reason for the late news.

The 2nd years I stayed with estimated that 40 to 50 (this was their educated guess) people came off the waitlist in their class. They said a bunch of people come off, and IIRC, USC doesn't interview that many people to begin with, so all is not lost yet. Remember, not every person who gets into this school will post on SDN.

I'm glad that there's movement from USC, but I wish I didn't have to wait til May to find out. Oh USC, why couldn't you just love me as much as loved you right off the bat 🙁

For wait listed students, do we have to do anything in terms of financial aid outside of just submitting our FAFSA?

I think so. I don't think we can access the school forms without a school ID, which wouldn't happen unless we get admitted.

Did anyone receive a call from Dr. Arias to inform about the waitlist instead of an email? Last year the ones that got a call were first to be accepted.

That didn't seem to be necessarily true, though. Some who were called got off the waitlist first, some apparently didn't. Some who got an email got off early, and of course, others didn't. I'm not sure the waitlist phone call means anything special. I would take it with a grain of salt unless they explicitly say you're at the top of the list.

And the biggest problem we get with this is that we'll never get a full picture of what's actually going on since most people who get in don't post, and the school isn't going to give away how they handle their waitlist.

Has USC finished interviewing / giving out decisions already? Are we all just waitlistees waiting haha

The facebook group has 190 people in it, but I don't know how many of them are current students. Maybe they are done with initial acceptances and are just waiting for people to start dropping. Or maybe no one drops and we are all totally screwed.

What is Facebook link?

The following was posted by adcom gyngyn on another thread earlier this week:

"The multiple acceptance list was early this year so, yes, we can now see where students we have accepted are also holding acceptances. We will shortly be able to see where our waitlisted candidates are holding acceptances. We cannot see where you have applied, been waitlisted or rejected. We cannot see your data until we have made a decision on your application (before matriculation)."

Which school thread? Wishful thinking that maybe they would consider giving offers to those of us still waiting for 1!

I am on alternate list. Email: "You have been placed on our alternate list, from which offers will be extended during the summer. The alternate list is not ranked."

Couple of questions:

1. Email says that the alternate list is not ranked. If not ranked then how does USC determine whom to select from the alternate list
2. Any idea how may people on alternate list last year or this year?
3. How may gets accepted from alternate list?

1) Probably a combination of people who send in LOIs and discretion of Dr. Arias. I imagine a combination of fit with the school's mission and culture as well as ties to CA help. Ultimately it'll be up to the Dean/adcom, though, so know one really knows.
2) No one really knows. I'm going to guess 150. I could be totally off, though.
3) Current students seem to guess 40 to 50, but I imagine the actual number will vary each year depending on how many withdraw their acceptance. Maybe we'll get lucky and lots of people withdraw, or maybe we'll be unlucky and relatively few people withdraw. This information is kept tightly contained within the school's administration, so it's to hard to give any sort of concrete info unless an adcom comes out and tells us. We're all pretty much in the dark re: the waitlist.

Does anyone remember what dr arias said about sending an update on May 15 if we are on the alternate list?

I want to say that she said all we need to do is send her a one liner saying something like hey I haven't been accepted anywhere (or anywhere I actually want to go). Keck is still my first choice.

However I don't remember if she said to send that only if you have been accepted elsewhere or if you haven't been accepted at all as well. Can anyone remember exactly what she said she wanted from us as far as updates on May 15???

Do you guys know if it's okay to send in an update on May 15th even if we don't have any acceptances?
I want to maximize the possibility of being accepted off the waitlist .... so I'm curious as to whether updates after May15th or okay or not.
