2013-2014 University of Southern California (Keck) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you guys know if it's okay to send in an update on May 15th even if we don't have any acceptances?
I want to maximize the possibility of being accepted off the waitlist .... so I'm curious as to whether updates after May15th or okay or not.

I seem to recall that either way (even if you don't have any acceptances yet), you can send in a one/two-liner just to make her aware after May 15th. During interview day Dr. Arias said a good majority of wait list applicants get accepted (not sure if literally, if so, then 50%+). Best of luck and hope to see you guys come August!

One or two lines?! Man, I have a one page masterpiece set to go.

Yeah Dr. Arias said to keep it short, although her exact wording was more like "It can be a one-liner," so I don't think she will necessarily penalize you for sending a little more. A page seems too much. 😱

I like to think it worked in getting me into my state school, even though it probably didn't have that much of an effect.

Are we supposed to email Dr. Arias directly or the usual medadmit email? I was guessing the latter

Finally! Something like a second look event...but seriously, Easter weekend!? Perhaps the final push for recruitment before aid packages come out? 😵

Anyone not-local going?

I assume it's totally fine to send it to medadmit. I don't think she wants her own inbox flooded with LOIs.

Is that the parents' weekend event? That's what we had last year, and I think it wasn't meant for students to attend.

When are financial aid packages coming out?

Is anyone who is on the alternate list invited to the second look weekend?

And how did you guys find out about it?

I'm coming from NorCal. That's quite a journey for me.😛

It was posted on the accepted students facebook page and then an email was sent shortly after.

People on the alternate list were invited?

So are people outside of Cali planning on making their way down for the April 19th event? I am currently on the east coast so I'm not sure if I want to go just for an afternoon of events, but at the same time, its an opportunity to check out housing options and meet other students/potential roommates. Anyone have any input about this?

I'm from the east coast too and I'm going to the event. I'll be checking out neighborhoods and the rental market. If you book now, flight prices aren't too bad. My round trip plane ticket was about $370. It'd be nice to meet more current students and our class as I haven't made a final decision yet.

decided today that it was worth it, so, I'll be seeing you there!

Has anyone that interviewed on Feb 26th heard back yet? I remember hearing that we'll hear back around 4 weeks after our interview. So if not this week, then next week?

Any explanations for the crickets this week? The adcom should've met on 3/24 no?

How are you/others planning on getting around while in LA looking at neighborhoods and apartments? I am worried that it'll get very expensive trying to cab around. anyone have any recommendations?

Renting a car the entire week that I'm there. I'm not sure how else you would get around. Also, if anyone is wondering about temporary accommodations, I've found that AirBnB is a great deal for trying to sample different neighborhoods and maybe getting a local perspective.

When sending the waitlist update May 15th, is it acceptable/customary/beneficial to include any Letters of Recommendation from physician experiences this past year?

When do classes begin at Keck? Also, has anyone received financial aid packages?

Alternate listed today via email. Le-sigh. I guess this doesn't bode well since I didn't receive the alternate list phone call.

what're the chances on the alternate list? i vaguely recall the dean say something about accepting a few students this year but it didn't look good. can someone verify this?

I don't recall her saying that, maybe you had a later interview date and more people confirmed their spots by then.. In which case 🙁

I don't recall the dean saying anything about it either way. I imagine it varies from year to year and there's no way to really know until late May/early June.

On my interview day Dr. Arias quoted 20 as the average number of alternate list students ultimately accepted. She said "about 20" so the real number will probably be around that.
