2014-2015 Albany Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats! Quick turn around! I haven't heard back and I interviewed Sep. 26!

Thanks! It was definitely a surprise to hear back so quickly. Best of luck, hopefully you get some good news soon!

wow acceptances are going out?! if we didn't receive it already, I'm assuming that means we didn't make the early cut.

I'd guess Under Consideration/Rejections are coming soon 🙁

There were no acceptances for September/ Early October. Statistically, they just didn't release all of their decisions. That is all.

Just got a rejection email. the first post-interview rejection really stings.

Straight up rejected lol and interviewed in mid-September. Not very surprised because I got a bad vibe from the MMI (my first one). I'm not that disappointed because I got accepted to a SUNY I liked better. Good luck to those still waiting!

Same here, interview in mid-September, just got the rejection email.

Hmm, looks like the rest of us who have yet to hear back post-interview may be awaiting an 'under consideration' e-mail, but no use in speculating until we actually hear something from AMC. Best of luck to everyone awaiting news!

Waitlist/Acceptance/Rejection e-mails started going out already for late September dates. I know someone who was reject post-interview a bit ago.

Rejected. Interviewed 10/06. Not the worst news in the world, but it still stings a little. AMC would have been a nice place to spend four years.

did you guys all feel like the MMI went THAT badly? that's a lot of rejections

All of these rejections are making me scared to interview here!

Anyways, I am interviewing December 11. Does anybody want to share a hotel room the night before?

Not SO badly, but they interview 1100 people for 100 seats (maybe 250-300 accept?), so I didn't feel like I probably performed as one of the best of the day. That was one of the things that gave me a bad vibe.. the director literally said "make it hard for us to reject you"

I think, given the volume of people they interview, they are going to be very picky about who they accept. It's probably a strong combo of numbers, profile, and a great interview. I wouldn't take the rejection hard. They interview 1200 and accept maybe 300 at most. That's roughly 25 percent of applicants getting in post interview.

The director also told us that they value consistency between stations, which kind of made me wonder what that meant. Like, is it better to do great at half of the stations and alright at the other half, or just do alright at all of them?

Also, to be honest, I feel like Albany is probably fairly careful about who they select to accept, since it felt like they offered interviews to a large variety of applicants (more so than most other schools), but ultimately, a select niche is actually going to matriculate there.

They are referring to your values and personality, which should be consistent. They don't want someone who forges a completely different personality before entering every station.

Interviewed yesterday (11/7) and had a great experience. Good luck all

How much weight do you think the secondary application carries after you interviewed at Albany? I revisited mine and found it to be complete crap with many grammatical and structural errors. Driving me crazy, any secondary experts here? Thank you~

I doubt there is a definitive answer to this question (no percentage). The secondary purpose is to paint that much more of a picture of who you are. It'll depend on personal opinion of who ever reads your app to decide if the errors are a reflection of the doc you'll be/your interest in the school. There so much else that makes up the application though that hopefully errors won't be a huge factor.

Received the 'under consideration' status today, interviewed in September.

Received 'under consideration' status post-interview today as well.

When we spoke to the Director on my interview day, he said very few people get immediate acceptances and that he is expecting the committee to do the bulk of acceptances around February. So basically, that means a long agonizing wait for the bulk of us who have interviewed. Cheers!

This isn't a waitlist to my knowledge. It is under consideration. Regardless I also got the status and will in all likelihood not stick this one out. Best of luck to all of you!

UC is different from the waitlist. i interviewed here last year and was put under the UC list afterwards. Then around may i received another email saying i was on the "alternate list" which is the actual waitlist. while you're in the "UC" list you can get accepted at anytime and they will reject applicants from the UC list before making the alternate list in May

This is kind of funny because that's exactly what doctors have to do in the real world.
That....is actually a fairly good point. A good physician should be able to adjust his/her personality in order to facilitate the best interactions with each individual patient that would ultimately result in the best quality of care being given.

UC status also..... great. the email wording was also weird lol. "we accept some, you weren't good enough for that, so UC for you." oh well, here's to a long year.

Adjusting the way physicians interact with pts and understanding needs is being culturally competent. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that one has to compromise ones belief or value that's what I meant.

Generally, yes, I agree with you. But there are always tricky gray areas as well where a physician's moral views may differ from the patient's (for example, if the two have differing opinions on how to deal with an unwanted pregnancy). But nevertheless, I think the format makes sense, but I also think it's kind of funny how it slightly contradicts one of the key features of a good physician (the cultural competence).

Anyone interviewing on 11/12 and want to get dinner the night before?

Does anybody know if Albany is receptive to update letters? Thank youuu!!

im pretty sure they aren't. i think it says on the bottom of the status page that they don't accept anything after you've submitted the secondary.
Damn. Welp, there goes my chances. And my ranking of Albany on my personal list of places I would attend.

You're allowed to submit an update letter with your interview acceptance. I wonder if they're okay with updates post interview or even pre interview if something happens. I might call tomorrow.
