Any movement off the waitlist yet?

From their FB page, WL movement may be starting <2 weeks from now (status was posted on May 1st).

Good Afternoon,

This has been an especially busy day trying to track our numbers. The good news is that we will probably start using our waiting list sometime within the next two weeks. The bad news is others likely will, too. This starts what I can only call horse trading: we make an offer from the waiting list and the person withdraws from the school where they were holding an acceptance, which means the other school will need to fill their class and then they make an offer to someone holding a spot at Hopkins, with the cycle continuing for about two months.

I've said it before and I expect to say it again: some of best students were initially on the waiting list. When it is all said and done, no one is going to ask you if you came off the waiting list at Hopkins (or any other school), but rather, they will look at where you received your medical degree and where you did your residency training.

I'll be out of the office on Monday and will update my posting on Tuesday. Have a relaxing and wonderful weekend.

If it's any consolation, the FB group has been steadily dropping in number and I know a fair amount of people who are still in the group have actually committed to other schools. Good luck!

I also know the WL is dropping in number as well - I have a few acquaintances who, like me, are withdrawing from the WL.

Don't think so. 🙁 I checked the FB page and thus far no new incoming students have been added.

If it's any consolation, the count has been steadily dropping the past few weeks and lots of people currently in the group have Stanford/Harvard/Penn SOM listed under their names. Hopefully this means some good news will be released shortly. Good luck!

So I decided to wait to finalize my housing plans at the school I am currently planning to attend (assuming I don't get off the Hopkins wait list) until I was sure that I was not in the first batch of students off the wait list. I assumed that if I didn't get in off the first batch after the April 30th decision date, the chance was very unlikely that I would hear back from Johnny Hops. Can someone comment on if this is true or not? If I didn't get a call yesterday, does that mean I was not in that first batch and that now the chance of getting in is very low and I should go ahead and finalize plans? I'm not bitter and I don't want sugarcoated news, the other school is awesome and in a lot of ways my preferred institution, but can anyone comment as to my chances at this point so that I can either go ahead and finalize housing or wait a few days?

I, and i bet most of us are to, am totally in the same situation. I have yet to select a place to leave/find a roomate/sign a lease at the school that I have committed to since April 30th. And yeh, its an ugly thing trying to guess how far up on the wait list we are. But no, I don't agree that just because we weren't called yesterday that we should lose hope. Here is ALL we know:

At 5:45pm yesterday (Baltimore Time), ProbablyAPenquin officially alerts us that movement has begun.

That is near the end of "normal" business hours - 5pm ish

I doubt they did ALL of they're calls in ONE day near the END of the day.

I'm sure some of the people they are calling are going to say no, and then they have to re-evaluate.

And, if you recall from their FB "horse trading" post, as people accept Hopkins, new spots will open at other schools which may allow current Hopkins students to get off those waitlists, thus opening up a new spot on the Hopkins waitlist.

All in all, no, I think it is not safe to assume that they did all they're calling tomorrow. I'm expecting some calls to be made throughout the rest of this week. So I'd say, which also goes for my own planning, that we should give it 2-3 weeks before assuming that won't be selected.

Yeah the whole thing is a horse trading/trickle down process. If Probablyapenguin and I both choose Hopkins, then our other schools have a spot. They might lure someone away from Hopkins, opening more spots.

I can't speak for probapenguin but I'm hoping you'll be a classmate more than thinking about letting go of the spot. Which is good news for a different group of wait listers I suppose.

I'm not worrying about what ifs Vesalius. Read my original post, I'm equally as pleased with school X as with Hopkins. They are both excellent institutions. I'm simply trying to save my roommates at school X the potential disservice of bailing on them after having committed to living with them. I think it's reasonable to ask that question to see if anyone could provide feedback.

Ah man, sorry to hear that ProbablyAPenguin. Even though I was joking about it earlier, I'm sad to hear you have to decide against hopkins. I hate this stupid money ****. It should not get in a student's way of something earned. Ugh. But I am sure you'll still have a great time at your original acceptance. I hope you go kick ass dude. Good luck

From the JHU Admissions FB Page today: "We are still using the waiting list, so those of you who are on it need to be a little more patient. If you said yes to being on the waiting list but now know that you wish to attend another school, it would be appropriate to send us an e-mail stating you wish to withdraw from the wait list. This allows us to concentrate on those who really are interested in being here and not those who merely want to collect an acceptance letter but have no intention of coming."

This may not be the most appropriate forum for this question, but can anyone offer any insight into which neighbourhoods or apartment complexes most medical students live? I'm trying to look into apartments from abroad, and am having difficulty deciding. I appreciate any input!

Do you guys have any recommendations for a laptop? It seems like JHSOM doesn't have any preferences/laptop spec requirements.
