2014-2015 Loyola University Chicago (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
During my interview the question, what would I do if I didn't get accepted came up. I mentioned that i'd ask the admissions committee about how i can improve my application. The interviewer seemed approving and understanding at that response, which makes me think it would be Ok.

Yeah, I've had some schools tell me they won't be able to provide feedback (although the interviewer may not be aware). I didn't have that question come up, but do you know when the right time would be to reach out? I'd like to give them a call and maybe schedule something.. I don't mind flying out to Chicago again.

This is a question you would want to direct to the office of admissions.

Here's where my confusion lies.. If the deadline to hold multiple acceptances has passed.. How come these waitlist aren't moving aggressively?

Because people can still be on wait list spots for other schools. They just can't have multiple acceptances. movement does feel almost nonexistent though. *sigh*

I would wait until I heard the Final descision on my application before I start inquiring about next year's application. Its not over yet. if you want to, you could probably ask the the inteviewer that was supportive of your application, if he gave you his business card, for advice if you don't get in. As a disclamer, My advice though is in no way the right way to go about it. I'm in the same boat as you and am in no way qualified to provide "correct" advice. best of luck and remember you are still in the game! I hope we are classmates next year!

What do you guys think about driving to admissions and talking to them in person? My friend who is at Loyola law thinks it will help, but I'm not so sure it would help with the medical school. I also feel like the wait list is not moving anymore? :/

Are you asking if you should talk to them to ask them how to improve your application for next cycle? Or the current status of your application? Either way, you should email admissions and ask them before you drive out there. 🙂

I can't comment on whether it's a good idea to talk to them in person, but I will say I got off the alternate list at the end of June, and we had another person who got in during orientation week. The list is still moving and will be for some time.

Thanks for keeping our hope alive, @M.MD . You know firsthand how much of a stressful struggle this process can be, I appreciate your words of wisdom!

Can anyone please post SSOM's pre-reqs on here? Is biochem and A&P part of the pre-reqs?

Edit:
  • 1 academic year of general chemistry, general biology, general physics, and organic chemistry--all with laboratory (biochemistry can be substituted for part of the organic requirement) Please note: Advanced Placement credits are acceptable to fulfill requirements, however, we recommend applicants to complete additional science courses to maintain their science knowledge.

Just spoke to admissions office, apparently there is MINIMAL movement bc the class is already full 🙁

I really hope this is true... especially because the entire admissions team at loyola is new this cycle unfortunately. 🙁

wait listed at 6....didn't get off any of the wait lists and the classes are all full. Looks like this year was especially tough - or so I've heard. Wait lists for most schools are barely moving this year.... stinks.

So I emailed loyola asking if I could meet with someone regarding my application (wait listed). I just got a call from Loyola and missed it. I had a heart attack thinking I was accepted. The person just left a voicemail saying that it is still early in the season and they do not know how many more they will accept.....but to keep waiting... not sure if this info helps anyone? Sounds like they are still accepting from the wait list, but very slowly...

Question to accepted students: For those of you who have applied for the grad plus loan and told you have been approved by the govt, has Loyola updated your account with it yet?

I need a moment to vent here. I don't get why Loyola can't tell us where each waitlist applicant is on the list; if not exact number, at least some sort of information. This isn't top-secret CIA information that it needs to be hidden. It's really helpful for us as students to know what's up..
so that we can plan accordingly.
I don't know where else to post this agitation; so, I am dropping it here.
Thanks for reading ya'll.
:horns:

Question: If they already ranked us, does sending updates and LOIs now do us any good?

I talked to the admissions coordinator yesterday again and she said the class was full

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. The class was likely "full" a couple months ago, but people end up taking acceptances elsewhere and spots open up.

Do we know how big the class size will be this year?

Does anyone know the average step1 score at Loyola? Or if it's good? I can't find any info on it

How's everyone holding up? Has anyone heard of any further movement from the wait list yet?

Late response-- but no, they haven't updated my info yet on the Loyola portal even though I was approved and did the MPN and the counseling session.

I actually just sent them an email right before I saw this, so I'll let you know what they say. I was assuming they were probably just a little behind, but it was nerve-wracking since I will have no way to pay for the rest of the tuition/living expenses without that loan.

How common is it to receive a merit-based scholarship from Loyola? Does anyone know? :/

@NachoPlatter They haven't downloaded applications from the govt yet, and when they do, they will process M3 and M4 first. You will get an email saying your award has been updated when yours is done. They said to go ahead and do the grad plus mpn.

Hey guys,

I am considering applying here this cycle. I was just wondering if anyone can advise me if I have a chance of landing a spot here.

My stats are: non-traditional student, OOS, 3.5cGPA, 3.4sGPA, MCAT 7/8/11 or 26. Have 1000+ hours of shadowing/volunteering, I currently work in a community health centers in Omaha (been here 2 yrs now), I will be getting my LOR from two physicians (Chief Medical Officer and Assistant Director of Family Practice) as well as two academic letters ( one from a foreign language professor who really knows me and one from a bio professor who somewhat remembers me- I graduated in 2013 and was working full time so I was in and out of school which is why I don't have a strong connections with my professors). I did research in undergrad (a few yrs ago).

I am just wondering if anyone knows someone who got an interview/accepted at Stritch with similar stats. I would greatly appreciate any help 🙂

I was interviewed and accepted with a similar c/sGPA, a little higher of an mcat, and similar volunteering hours. I think the biggest red flag would be your mcat, since the average mcat for Loyola is ~31. However, Loyola is known for looking at more than just your mcat/gpa, so I definitely wouldn't rule this school out. I think the secondary is extremely important for this particular school, so I would spend a good amount of time drafting responses that show Loyola how you fit their mission (they are Jesuit and focus a lot on giving back to the underserved). Both my interviews were focused on my secondary responses, and I really feel like my secondary answers and interview helped me get past my average mcat/gpa. Loyola does require 2 science LORs + 1 non-science LOR, so you would need to get another academic letter from a science professor. PM if you want more detailed numbers/ ECs 🙂 Good luck!

This may have been answered already, but is there a dress code at Stritch? I definitely noticed students wearing nicer clothes compared to some other schools at my interview and second look.

Business casual + white coat for any patient/standardized patient encounters, otherwise there's no dress code

what to do at this point..
Nil. Sucks that we're part of the year of historically small number of waitlisted acceptees, but that's life. Just sit back and start applying again (and keep hope).

Hearsay or verified fact?
